Google phone, mobile OS, or absolutely nothing due on Monday
Look, we know how you feel -- rumor mongering over the Google Phone (or OS) and its supposed appearance (in a multitude of forms, with an avalanche of partners) has reached the tipping point where it goes from exciting to annoying. That said, when the Wall Street Journal (amongst others) mentions a date or a place, you tend to pay attention. The stock-market rag is now reporting that the infamous GPhone will be making its official appearance on Monday. On the flip side, some say the story is that Google-partner Android will deliver news of an SDK for a new mobile OS -- a "complete software stack" based on Linux. Of course, we're not going to be placing any bets on said activity (nor should you), because with the way things have been playing out thus far, it seems pretty unwise to make wagers -- unless they're on the fact that no one really knows right now. So, if by Monday night you're sobbing uncontrollably because the obviously-life-changing device / software never made a showing, don't say we didn't warn you.Read -- Ring-Ring...Google to Announce Phone Plans Monday

Sprint may actually get a decent phone?
Sprint would cripple it, so no.
and Verizon wouldn't??
I hope it comes out.
Maybe this will make Apple release more features and a decent SDK.
Whoever comes out on top, the consumer wins : )
I hope they don't lock it to the network, and don't lock down the hardware.
Then I hope they crush the iPhone so bad Steve Jobs loses his composure and rips his only pair of jeans and has to wear something else for once.

I love choices. Can I mix and match and choose Google OS?
Still waiting for the google phone free engadget.com filter
If Monday were April 1, I'd say that Google has been building up to their greatest April Fools Day prank ever, even going so far as to generate false hype. But alas, April 1 is a long way off yet.
It wouldn't be unlike Google to actually launch something on April 1st. Gmail, anyone?
The reason why I voted for Engadget at http://2007.weblogawards.org/polls/best-technology-blog-1.php is because I admire the willingness to go out on a limb and make some pretty gutsy predictions, putting all their tech cred on the line. This post is like icing on the cake of extreme forecasting.
That said?
That said?
It's a good thing I've been in contact with an unnamed google source and they ARE coming out with a google based phone.
I think, if google is only creating the OS, they wouldn't be talking with verizon/...
I think you talk with those companies if you are actually creating the phone, and not
just the OS for a cellphone. no?
tom
Well, perhaps the google phone is virtual. Like their office applications, you already have to be connected to google.com to use it.
I've just blown your mind, haven't I?
The suspense is terrible!!
It's getting to be worse than Palm Linux!
I'll just be glad when something happens that'll allow Engadget to stop posting that ugly photo they always use for gPhone stories
good to know i am not the only one who feels this way...
Where did that horrid picture come from? what is that? its been linked to every damn gphone post ive seen.
Sounds oh so very interesting. I highly doubt that anything will come of this though.
Not to be a fanboy, but Google is just about the only company remotely capable of producing a real iPhone-killer. Hopefully the terrible US carries won't cripple it.
Zero portfolio and you think google can take on XXX product. Hell I have phones which has already taken on the Iphone and won last year.
I don't want to disappoint anyone, and I could be wrong, but I just can't see google releasing any hardware, even if they don't make it and just branded it. The reason is that google is all about platforms and open standards. Creating hardware just flies in the face of their philosophy. I have no idea what they will do: google is not a predictable company. What I am sure of is that if they indeed do anything dedicated to the mobile sector, it will be in the spirit of the google philosophy: making he web a better place [in this case, for mobile users].
Google has produced (or branded) hardware before, such as hardware search servers for businesses/corporate intranets. I don't think a Google-branded phone/OS/software stack is too far fetched.
Best argonomics i ever seen. no stupid wastage of screen area around screen. And total open OS, man i am already having wet dreams about it...
