AMD is apparently getting ready to launch its new
Phenom processor on November 19th, according to DailyTech. The chipmaker's media guide for the launch seems to have been leaked early, and it's got some interesting info in it regarding the Phenom and the next-gen Radeon. We already knew most of the Phenom deets, but it looks like the supporting RD790 chipset is also ready to go, along with three versions of the RV670 Radeon HD 3800 series. The low-end 3850 is actually a revised version of the existing
Radeon HD 2900 with a die shrink from 80nm to 55nm, but the top-end Radeon HD 3870 is a new design with a 100MHz clock bump to 775MHz. All the cards feature support for Quad Crossfire and AMD's Triple Play Physics system, but don't feature any of the hardware video decoders that had been rumored. Unless something changes, we should be seeing all this stuff on the 19th -- which is probably when we'll know about pricing as well.
I wonder if all of these words and specs can be competitive when its out on the market....
...but don't feature any of the rumored hardware video decoders that had been rumored...
Why is the grammar here so terrible?
You mean you don't always write like that?
It's sickening. What sort of example do they think they're setting here? High school kids read this blog, and if their English teachers complain about their grammar or style (after using "words" like "deets", etc.), all they have to do is point at Engadget and say, "But Mrs. Krabappel, these guys get *paid* to write like that."
Except that mots kids at schools these days couldn't care less about their own grammar, spelling or vocabulary, regardless of what their teachers would like to teach them...
I've seen many kids that will type as though they were sending an sms on a cellphone, while online. Even worse, where they would substitute words they ought to be able to spell correctly, for their cellphone variants, 'because it's shorter and easier'.
Finally, some news from the AMD crowd.
Who's AMD?
They are those guys who made those 64bit procs that were over hyped and then didn't do anything for a few years.
INTEL! all the way. AMD will never catch up!
Why would you feel compelled to be loyal to either? If AMD never catches up and eventually goes under Intel will just get lazy. Competition is what keeps the industry moving forward as fast as it has.
Ha! AMD stomped all over Intel, with their xp, and athlon 64's. It wasn't until the advent of the core 2 duo, that Intel could even compete with AMD!
I don't care if they catch up, it would be good for everyone by pushing things forward. But it is stupid to put out a half-assed product. What's the point.
The shit is about to hit the fan for everyone if Phenom doesn't compare moderately well with Core 2, AMD would likely lose standing and encounter much large money issues, likely bankruptcy and then we are left with no competing companies to engage in price wars over processors and graphics cards, leading to more expensive computers for everyone.
Looking past biases, this needs to work - period. If it doesn't we all have problems.
On a more biased note - i really want my next computer to keep in line with my all AMD household.
It's already been shown that Phenom can't compete with C2, so AMD will have to price the Phenom's low or they won't sell. On the server side AMD still has the upper hand, although just barely with 2 sockets but can easily outperform Intel in memory bandwidth on 4 socket servers. So for pricing sakes let's hope the $$$ they make in the server market will be enough to get them through for awhile. If they don't come up with something better by this time next year Intel will take the lead in all market segments with Nehalem.
AMD doesn't make their money in the processor market. What are you talking about?
Even if you hate AMD, you need them to do well. If not, Intel has 100% of the market and the price gouging begins.
I wish AMD luck with these new chips but I don't think its going to work out well unless they are a lot cheaper then the Intel processors.
I have been planning on building a new computer early next year. I was thinking around February or March. My last 4 computers were AMD based and yet I have net even considered AMD for this new computer. I will look at Phenom after it launches but if AMD was confident they would be sending engineering samples to reviewers.
We already know that Intel is working on more high-end discrete graphics products; in that same sense, it's pretty likely that Nvidia would begin to develop some CPUs. I don't think the end of AMD would be the end of competition in the CPU arena; not by a longshot.
CPUs are more complicated than GPUs so its very unlikely that Nvida will get into the CPU business.
OK I'll say this first I'm a bit of an AMD fanboy all the way back to the K6-2, but Intel as of late has been putting out some nice chips. Unless Phenom is something that we haven't seen before then no one will really care. This is for a few reason 1 AMD can't build enough chips to flood the market like Intel. The silver lining to this whole this is if AMD wins its care against INTEL then they will have to pay out the nose to AMD. The only issue is even with all the money AMD could win it would still take a few years to build out new Fab plants. So Intel still has a leg up on AMD...
True, Nvidia probably wont be getting into the CPU business but they are now competing with Intel in the integrated graphics arena with some pretty solid chips.
Phenom should bring amd about level with intel, will be interesting to see what happens then
Let us hope the Phenom is like the Athlon 64 or X2 {when they first came out, better than P4 and P4D}.
Without AMD would their even be 64-bit? {64-bit is still just in its infancy}
with competition we all pay less.
I find it very humorous that people are already saying that its proven the phenom isnt better than Core2.
First off the only benchmarks we have currently are for the Opteron quad cores. Same cores, lower clock speed = NOT THE PHENOM.
Second, With those quad cores running at only 1.8 ghz per core they were beating intel quad cores on many of the tests when the intels had roughly twice the clock speed. This doesnt show that the barcelona core is a better architecture??? Sure does to me.
Third, the phenom is being released at higher clock speeds. 2.4 to 2.8 supposedly. If this is in fact true then the Phenom will trounce the core 2 no questions asked.
Finally, Regardless of what any of us say, this is thus far pure speculation so how about you give them a chance before writing them off and basking in your Intel Fanboy glory?
@ System48, according to this: http://www.expreview.com/news/hard/2007-10-29/1193620830d6602.html, the phenom is an average of 3.5 frames/sec behind the Yorkfield. Yes, that would be the brand new 45nm Intel.
Not doubting this since this is the new intel chip, not the current one most people have which is the one i was speaking of. But how exactly do they have a phenom to test if the phenom isnt released yet?
if i can get this cheaper than a penryn processor im all for it.
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=9545 indicates the three models to be released this month will range from $280.00 to $330.00.
