Boy hires hitman to kill parents after grounding denies PlayStation, TV
We've certainly gotten cranky after being denied some quality gaming time, but 16-year-old Cory Ryder took it to the next level by attempting to hire a hitman to kill his parents after they took away his PlayStation and denied him television. Seems young Cory had been making threats around the house, so his mom hired a cop to pose as a hitter -- and Cory took the bait, offering up his dad's truck as payment. After a couple rounds of "negotiations," the officer revealed himself and arrested Cory for attempted murder, for which he's now awaiting trial. Of course, you'd think that having a hitman conveniently show up after you'd been threatening to kill your parents might set off an alarm or two, but Cory's apparently not the brightest bulb around -- his PlayStation was confiscated due to failing grades.[Via Joystiq]

A more enterprising young man might have simply used his hitman funds to simply procure a new playstation and television for top secret usage.
Also, I blame Luc Besson for his brilliant and fanciful depiction of the hitman as hero.
attempted murder? isn't it more like conspiracy to commit murder?
I've read through this whole thing and the kid is an idiot. And yes, spanking him would have made the situation better if it was done as punishment from an early age. You can't just go hitting a kid for the first time when he's 16, there's a whole psychology involved.
Secondly, I love all you guys, cuz I just realized that if you combine the finer points of everyone's comments (for the most part), you actually have an educated and professional assessment of the situation of no less quality than today's legal system can muster up. So kudos to all of us. I came to this conclusion when TY said, "attempted murder? isn't it more like conspiracy to commit murder?"
"By your powers combined, I am Captain Attorney!"
Agree ovi - if they had instilled a bit of discipline early it might've turned out better. Too late to try when he's almost out of his teens. The world will be his learning place now - fool.
Taking your child's toys away as punishment can be a sign of good parenting but no good parent in their right mind would want their child to have a criminal record. Even if his record is wiped clean, as he is a juvy, media will always remember this incident and it will hurt his job prospects in the future. Then again, if your child is serious about killing you it's probably too late for good parenting.
what an asshole
No wonder the kid is messed up just look at the kind of parents he has. If your kid were threatening to kill you what would you do? Would you get a cop to pretend he's a hitman and send your kid to jail for attempted murder or would you just take your child to a mental hospital and get him some help? The parents are complete idiots who just screwed up their sons life.
well guess he can play with some joysticks now in prison.
and yes the mom also needs help for doing that. this world needs help. i heard of some story where some guy in korea was it? got knifed in counter-strike in an internet cafe and then went across the room and knifed the dude who knifed him!
wtf.
Did you guys check out the article? The mom is 35.. kid 16, so she was 19 when she had him? Nineteen? Where was Trojan Man when we needed him?
This should have gone somewhere else. This site is weird.
Also, where's the L, the last letter in my nickname? How could THIS have happened?
This is the original article and it give alot move detail about this case.

wouldnt it be easier if u just steal the PlayStation back...? so stupid.
@Sendoh
playstation has very little to do with him hiring a hitman to kill his parent.
Gizmodo is getting silly just copy/pasting from here ... sad
Tons of things could be said about what kind of other news this story could pull up.
Oyoi, my opinion thinks the mother was smart in her action, since the kid was running around the house flapping his mouth about knockin' his parents off. Taking bait that was truly too convenient really does sorta prove he isn't very educated.
lolzz.... my sympathies to cory..... i agree , no parents are above the playstation.....lolzzz.... LAMAO... what was this guy thinking... !!!@#$%%%&*%$!!
hmm... maybe his parents should have encouraged him, he could have become a game tester...lolzz.. i know a few who have mighty paychecks as game testers... poor cory.... and franky i dont think i will matter to him as long as they allow him a playstation , tagged along with the already present tv in prison... man u rok dude... keep rokkin in prison to... nothin matters as long as black and NFS is there.....
Stupid American...
Man...the stupidity of this situation simply astounds me...
Hi,
I'm French and I have nothing against American people (and nothing against you too David W.). (*)
Contrarily to mcheddadi, I could have say "Well I'm not supprised, it's America afterall". Because it's being a huge dumbass to reduce people of a nation to dumbasses too. Nevertheless, it's true that it's in America we see the most incredible things. Thus that doesn't surprise me to see this kind of story coming from USA.
(*) We, French, know the worst of America through TV series, movies (Michael Moore, Borat, ...), news reports (showing your stupid president, we have one too), videos on YouTube & cie (showing American people who locate Korea in Australia), ... but that's only a selected part of your people. Ok, there are idiots in USA, so there are in France too. There are people like me too who they are not so extremist in their judgments, it's human nature... we're human (and humane I hope) right ?
French and American people, that judge each other through politics and jackasses put in the front of the scene, are not so different from each other and don't worth more than the one they judge.
The thing that unites the entire world population is hatred of their own politicians. Your guy sucks and so does ours. We are brothers!
america is also one of the most populated places in the world. therefore it would make sense that a lot of different things happen here.
This has nothing to do with video games. This kid was failing at school too. If this was 20 years ago, it would of been the same deal, just different electronics in the house. If the kid was willing to kill his parents over being punished, then hes a dumbass psycho little bastard that still would of done it in the 1950's.
Hmm, let me start off by saying that I'm a strong supporter of the idea that people always have a choice.
This kid claims he felt pressured into talking to the hitman. How easily does this kid fold over things if he can be pressured into ending two lives? All he had to do was go "No thanks I'm no longer interested." They say he went through several negotiations. What does that mean? Did they have a disagreement about payment? During any one of these negotiations he could have aborted the "mission."
But what do I know? I'm three years older than this kid. Being 19 and in college, maybe I'm somehow more rational than a high school student. Still, when two lives are hanging in the balance, 16 is certainly old enough to know what needs to be done.
So this kid did fail pretty hard. Does he deserve a second chance? Yes. And (probably) in 4 years when he's 21, he'll get it. He might continue to fail it, in which case he's learned nothing and doesn't deserve any more chances. If he learns, he might just come out of this thing ahead. Sure, all this sucks for him, but there is no reason he can't turn his life around.
it seems the mother did something right for once... if the kid is failing, is threating the parents, its obvious he wasn't raised right...
...God, I don't know what to say.. except:
What a loser.
NILAY, ARE YOU SLEEPING? people are using *gasp* law terminology in the comments! translate now, you lazy boy!
okey seriously, what is entrapment?
and another thing, frankly IMHO, corporal puishment should be limited, but not be totally abandoned, HELLO! HE TRIED TO WHACK HIS PARENTS!
a good spanking "might" have knocked sense long ago that studies were more important than some stupid game, atleast pass you fool, getting good grades is anothe thing..
okey here is my story, don't know whether you agree to it, but well it served me right...
i am a pakistani, and i am the youngest, which means that, although my parents pamper me like crazy, my elder bro has full authority to "displine", in what ever way he seems necessary, my dad has never stopped him...
when i was in school, my bro used to thrash the living hell outta me, if i didn't study, or was fooling around, i used to HATE him then, but i never felt the urge to whack him... yes in moments of extreme anger, i felt like pummeling him and get my revenge, but never did i feel to actually kill him, even if my body was sore from his steel-handed beatings...
now i am in college, fairly good in grades, and my bro and me are unseperable, heck i am more close to my bro than my parents!
your mileage may vary, but i think a beating or two are necessary, to correct a child, if he goes to extremes, and actions like grounding dont work
ofcourse, the US has seperate culture, so maybe this doesn't carry there...
just my two cents...
btw, here is a detailed article...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/31/AR2007103103148.html
I'm sure the prison guards will get him a PS to get him calmed. Oh well, He will enjoy his game in a locked room where there will be no need for grades or dad and mom around :-)
Here is the simple fact in this story. Parents are affraid to actually punish their kids. I do not mean take away TV or your F-ing Play station. I mean bend your ass over and take a belt to it. Society wants everyone to be nice and get along. The cold hard fact is this will NEVER happen, and this "new" way of punishing your kid by making them sit in a corner and think about it for 15 minutes.............. GET REAL!!!! All this does it let them stew over the fact that you are the one that put them there, and it seems plot to have you killed.
We need to get back to making a kid go and choose the switch from a willow tree, IT WORKED!!!!!
They should have hired a special effect artist to fake their deaths and make it look like the hit was completed, just to give the kid a dose of "reality" and see how he'd react to his parents being dead. . . And then, once they'd done that, they could take it further and put him in foster care for a short while.
From what I'm told, foster care is FAR WORSE than what this kid got from his real parents.
Once he'd been there for a while, hating the situation, stewing in his guilt and (hopefully) mourning the loss of the people who raised him, the truth would be revealed and he would spend a few years in the psych ward.
If he's normal, he'd regret killing them. If he's psychotic, he'd blow it off and play video games. If it's the latter, he should be removed from society before he really does kill someone.
Now he'll be grounded for 10-15yrs. Smart move, ass.
From the article: There's something seriously wrong with the kid to begin with. The kid had serious problems in school and other stuff. The kid sounds like a sociopath. Any kid who hires a hitman to kill his parents just because he wants to play video games deserves to placed in jail.
Unfortunately, the media and especially, Jack Thompson will blame what else? Video games. Video games are not to blame. The kid is nuts! Blame the kid.
Probably the kid also needs medical help, not just jail time.
"You're reading an _American_ blog via the Internet, which is also an _American_ creation. Using Windows? American. A Mac? American. Linux? Yeah, Linus is American, too. Y'know that phone you use? We invented it. Wear jeans? We came up with that, too."
Actually...
while the Internet might be American, the World Wide Web was created by a British scientist (Tim Berners-Lee) working for a French-Swiss company (CERN)
Linus Torvalds has dual citizenship, wrote Linux while studying at the University of Helsinki, is married to a finnish woman, and has only been living in the US for 10 years.
The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell, a scotsman.
Denim fabric was first used in the town of Nimes in France. Hence its name.
this has nothing to do with the story, incidentally.
//Andrew
The web was invented in Europe at the pan-European CERN laboratories by Tim Berners-Lee from the UK. So the "Internet" we're reading this on is actually *not* American. //
The internet was invented by US Military as an intranet between bases. Nice try but you're still a douche.
Could have been genetic. The parents couldn't have foreseen this mingling of their DNA to produce such horrendous results.
//Stupid American... //
Stupid Immigrant
That kid is really gay.

all while they were all americans living in america, NOT in their native countries.
Solidly worthy material for the Jerry Springer program.
lol!
"Videogames aren't bad for people."
Apparently they are for some. That kid needs Christ, an possible exorcism, and some serious counseling.
Oops. Meant "a possible", not "an possible".
Thank god, now they can stop blaming hip-hop and rock music. On the who invented what where and where they lived and spoke to (internet, www, jean, telephone, etc,).. it doesn't matter. It's not what you know, it's what you do with what you know. All this arguing over who invented what is a waste of time, energy, and space. I haven't even read the damn article, but I know this, that kid putting a "hit" on his parents doesn't surprise me in the least. Kids nowadays pack semi automatics and uzi to school seeking revenge for being teased, ignored, and bullied. Kids are out of control, their parents have totally lost control, (and politicians don't have a clue, lol). I can say this because I work with truly dysfunctional families and have been for about 10 years. Just think about the increased in school shootings that's occurring world wide. Babies raising (and trying) babies. Truth be told, I don't worry about what I hear and read, I worry about what I don't hear or read. Maybe the Mayans were on to something with their 12/21/2012 calender after all. Be good and reasonable all.
Entrapment! What kind of parent will bring a Cop to pose as a hitman to arrest their 16 year old kid. These people must be really bad parents, not being able to control their kid and take it to this kind of measure. Now the poor kid will have a lifetime record to "attempt to kill his parents" Dumbass!
lmao!! retard got what he had coming
I think the kid needs a good old Fashined Ass whooping! Plus time in a boys home,to let him see what it,s like with out his parents. And dont let him have any phone or mail.
I post, this type of games should be taken off the shelves in the video gaming industry, and have it rated 18+ for Europe, and M18 for the states.
Maybe I would just stick to Need for Speed and Spyro for now. Violent games are just the blame. Remember Columbine? The shooters played Doom non-stop. Have you ever heard people kill each other from items they won on an MMORPG tournament? Have you heard that America's Army promotes violence in war? How about that dastard Grand Theft Auto that I can't even stand? It kills good guys, It is about damn gangs and it is just mass murder! Do everybody want a damn example just to make people stop making violent games? What if your kids or your family gets caught in violence connected to Doom? What if your Neighborhood is full of gangs inspired by GTA? Would you like it to be this way? Better end this!
