Huh. Look at the companies in that consortium. This is intended to be a tactical strike at iPhone before it really gains traction, which it hasn't, and I'm betting won't.
Welcome to the world of 4G viruses.
OpenMoko FTW
It's a nice dream, no doubt - crack pipe in hand or not. I hope that since all kinds of hardware will have to be supported on it, they will get bogged down trying to support low resolution and slow acting cpu phones. Then there will be infighting over which chips and phone specs to cater to.
Anyway, overall good news ..this is what Microsoft gets for charging exorbitant prices for their operating systems.
Also, OpenMoko already exists with similar goals why couldn't these companies sign on to that instead?
Argh I mistyped in the above. I meant to say I hope they do NOT get bogged down etc. And the second sentence was NOT meant to affirm it.
Anyway, I want to say I do support this venture/idea ..and definitely don't wish any bad on it.
I just hope it let's me get a 800 or higher pixel width on my phone. The human eye can discern 1200 pixels per inch from 10 inches .. and 500 ppi phone displays have been shown by I think Sanyo/Epson or maybe it was samsung or sharp ..which is more than enough to show XGA
on a phone.

Sounds like Java for phones. I'm sure apple will love to let Google OS run on their phone... NOT

Cool. Now maybe I can get a phone that won't suck as hard as the ones in the past have.
Check out google stock. Nice bump with this announcement.
Well this could a be nice OS tu put on my actual cellphone that is completely locked by my provider... My Moto RAZR V3 could be better... At least I could put my own ringtones without breaking my contract... :D
It's great that they are working on unifying the experience and all that, but is this not the same industry that can't agree on a world wide standard to use our devices on? I mean what use is this REALLY going to offer if the experience is not seamless across different regions and networks?
Not feelin it...
An open platform like Android will allow application developers a standard functionality across all phones. This will allow everyone to have more choice of applications.
If the SDK supports Voice over IP then it will get even better. Then applications can merge data, video, and voice. Imagine having a phone call using VoIP and sharing photos with the other person in real time over the data network in a chat client. It's a simple application yet current platforms make this impossible to implement. An open platform would make it possible.
