Unless you're living in
the UK, it's hard to get your hands dirty with Nokia's new
Music Store. Unless you're living under rock, you know that it's Nokia's intention to take the service global as it vies for dominance over digital downloads. Fortunately, a quickie, video review from Nokia's new
N81 has been posted by
NokNok.tv. They claim that "hunting out tracks is a doddle, as is downloading." A good thing, apparently, judging by the 4 / 5 stars awarded. Check the action after the break.

This IS a doddle!!!
Brassen @ Nov 5th 2007 8:00AM
What's a doddle?
Jon @ Nov 5th 2007 8:01AM
Easy.
thethirdmoose @ Nov 5th 2007 8:01AM
A doddle is a good time. Like,
"For a doddle, call 555-555-1234"
See?
Jon @ Nov 5th 2007 8:02AM
Easy.
Brassen @ Nov 5th 2007 11:08AM
Thanks!

Dude.
Just because the foul-mouths at NokNok go around uttering filth like "doddle" is no reason to copy them.
Man. My kids nearly saw that.

I believe that a 'doodle' is something you place in your anus.
Hence finding music on the store is as easy as placing a variety of items in your anus.

With a little bit of careful editing it's possible to give any impression. In this case all the bits here where navigation is involved are cut out - from my experience moving the cursor around the screen in that browser is hell ... but they never show that part!
It's doomed. Nokia you used to be a great product design company. You, and Sony can't do software as well as Apple or Microsoft. And you're not a service provider or media company. Look what happened to Psion when it got that crazy notion.

Just thought I'd point out "doddle" means "easy".
Chris @ Nov 5th 2007 8:30AM
HA HA!
Doesn't look like a doddle to me, Compared to browsing the ITunes Music store on the IPhone!
It looks about 5 years out of date.
Rich @ Nov 5th 2007 8:54AM
Talking of technology 5 years out of date, how long does it take to download an album over EDGE?
Chris @ Nov 5th 2007 9:00AM
Ahh nice point :) - Ok ill give you that one.
Still If you compare the nokia service to the itunes one for usability (and doddleness :) ) the ITunes store on IPhone looks like it wins hands down from that video.

"Talking of technology 5 years out of date, how long does it take to download an album over EDGE?"
It is called iTunes *WiFi* Music Store for a reason ;-)

Why the hell did they think it was a good idea navigate the phone's UI by using a mouse pointer controlled by a d-pad? Shouldn't that idea have been ditched five minutes after it was first suggested? Yuk. What happened to Nokia's UI elegance?
Kevin @ Nov 5th 2007 5:39PM
Because it is running in Nokia's stupid, sucky mobile browser which intercepts key press events to drive the cursor (because there is no mouse to do it) so web apps running in it can't run off cursor key events.

Can I just say, as an Englishman, those title cards where obviously written by what we call "a pikey, chavey b'stard" Words like 'doddle' and 'tasty' and 'plonked" are normally utterances heard from 14 year olds drinking white lightning cider and wearing tracksuit bottoms and thinking of ways of mugging me of my iPhone!
To my American cousins I apologize for this foul mouthed yob!
Yours Faithfully

"Nokia Music does not currently support the Mozilla Firefox browser on your operating system"
Clueless doddles!
SkyScrap @ Nov 5th 2007 11:52AM
Indeed, I just cannot believe that...

Further, what does "bespoke" mean?
Oh, dictionary...
1. Custom-made. Said especially of clothes.
2. Making or selling custom-made clothes: a bespoke tailor.
Bespeak means
1. To be or give a sign of; indicate. See Synonyms at indicate.
2.
a. To engage, hire, or order in advance. See Synonyms at book.
b. To request: bespeak a favor.
3. To foretell; portend: fearful weapons that bespeak great loss of life.
4. Archaic To speak to; address.
Hmm, never knew that.

I unfortunately trusted Nokia and purchased the handset shelling out Rs 3850 (this does not even has a basic camera). I bought this on 24th October 2007 and TATA Teleservices after a deep sleep of 3 days
activated it on 27th October 2007 after my repeated calls to the dumb center (they named it call center). One can fry an omlet after speaking for 2 minutes on this handset. The reception is the worst one can imagine. The maximun time one can talk is an hour and the battery gets discarded there after. The phone finally went dead on 7th November 2007 after a total call duration of 16 hours! I went to the TATA Teleshop where I purchased the handset and they said that its not their problem and advised me to approach the Nokia care.
I went to Nokia Care which is in the other corner of my city (CDMA care center) though nokia sells handsets, it forgets to add service centers proportionately as the goats in India are habituated to standing in Queues and can tolerate apathy at its heights. One of the call center executive (other tahn the one who booked my complaint) told that this is a defective model and they are receiving many handsets.
My handset was handed over to the center and I was told to come after 15 days! as it has to go all the way to Chennai and get rectified. I asked them for the solution for the 15 days of my suffering and they told me that they are sorry! I have to suffer for the mistake of buying Nokia. Why do these so called MNC’s have an indifferent attitude when it comes to India? Can they dare say the same in developed country? I called Nokia care and they proudly said that they are doing a favor by giving a 1 year warranty. They just dont have shame to admit teh fault and withdraw the model from the market. They replaced the faulty batteries earlier as the supplier is a responsible company and admitted its mistake and replaced at its cost. Nokia is only a mediator who might have charged the company for replacing too!
I went to TATA Teleservices expecting some response. To my surprise, they showed the way to cancel my connection! I have never ever expected a so called ethical company to be so irresponsible. Unlike GSM, we dont have alternate handsets with us even the company is aware of this. They have some one called a Nodal officer who is there for the sake of regulatory obligation no point in approaching them as its waste of time and money.
Finally I ended up buying anothet handset (Huawei) for Rs1200 which is much superior than the rogue Nokia which charged me more than thrice the price of this handset with the same features! Never go for TATA Teleservices and if you happen to by mistake, never ever buy a nokia handset. I wish they will learn from the OEMs who acted much responsibly (battery replacement by matsushita is an example) Nokia please take a que from them and prosper or else perish.
