New Zunes to share video? Update: nope!

P.S. -What the hell is up with "The Social" popping back up? Didn't Microsoft leave it behind? Or has "the social" just become the product's tagline-tagline? We don't know, but we don't like it when these guys try and mess with our heads.
Update: We heard back from the Zune gang on this one. We misinterpreted Zune Social to mean the things you can do in the "Social" menu of your Zune (silly us); instead they were referring to the other Zune Social -- the social music network being launched with the new Zunes. Oh, and apparently "Welcome to the social" isn't dead yet, despite that AdAge piece reporting its premature demise, so we'll lay off Microsoft while they think different about tagline grammar.
Update 2: Oh, Microsoft pinged to let us know that on top of the rest, there is actually no Zune Social video sharing -- that was just a mistake. Rocking.

That would be sweet but we have to be careful to distinguish between the social network and the media player.
I'm pretty sure they're refering to the Social Network. Engadget has some research to do.
they are referring to the social network for sure not their old tagline....they are launching a social network remember? with zune cards etc
did you even read anything that MS said about the new zunes.
you'll be able to share short videos. most likely just the videos on the zune marketplace.
And The Social is now the whole online zunetag thing that they've made. it's not part of the advertising campaign it's part of zune.
I'm guessing its going to let you share the videos you get from the "Zunecast" section of the marketplace. Thus being DRM free and legal to trade.
I thought that "the social" was like a myspace for Zune owners...HMMM, Im pretty sure its a website
Yes, you are right. The Zune Social is like the Last.fm site for Zune owners where you get your Zune Card (like the Xbox gamertag for music)
I just noticed the line "New Marketplace
Re-stocked with thousands of new tracks, podcasts, videos, and DRM-free MP3s" in the email. How far does "videos" go? Are we talking TV Shows?
I think "the social" is a marketing campaign version of the Pontiac Aztek.
or the marketing campaign equivalent, to put it more correctly. duh!
Lets see....the Zune has been out how long and video is just now going to be available on the Marketplace? To little to late Microsoft.
*too little too late
Let's worry less about their crappy advertising (ie: the social) and more about the products.
I've made my choice for the year (I bought an iPT) but I'm thinking next season the tides may turn.
Whether or not they use the term "social" isn't going to influence my decision, but the hardware will.
16 gigs is the BEST possible investment for $400 and the best hardware!
Sorry but a real web browser and YouTube over WiFi on the iPod Touch beats the pants off of sharing videos on the Zune.
I think the black horse in the race is actually Nokia's internet tablet thing.
Nevertheless, a year is a long time. Even the zune could morph into something with far less suck to it.
@Carlos:
The iPod touch is over priced and has way to little storage and no expansion. Besides everyone compares the Wifi on the iTouch to Zune Wifi, when they are completely different. Zune Wifi is ad hoc, iTouch is infrastructure.
@David Clark
I totally agree. I have a 770, and it blows the pants off of anything. Throw in a large mem card, and its amazing.
I personally bought a Zune30 on woot for $105. I was going to wait and get an 80, but for that price, I couldnt resist.
I must say, I like the Zune alot more than iPod video I had, and just as much as the SanDisk players I have used.
Based solely on the functions a PMP is supposed to have, I would go Zune. Add in the sub par sharing, larger screen, and actual updates (not these crap security updates that the iPod gets, I know they got games, but thats all they really have gotten) and its amazing.
I wouldnt have anything else on the market.
maybe they're implying that you should be social with yourself. Man, that didn't even start out as a squirting joke, but if the shoe fits....
The new 3x3 rule:
You get to watch every third frame of a video for up to three days.
HA
I think they are refering to the zune social web site not the zune being able to share videos, just the website being able to share videos eg youtube ish thingy
"The Social" is referring to all of the things you can do that Microsoft has put out for the public. Everything is connected. Windows to Zune, Windows to Xbox 360, Xbox 360 to Zune and any other "thing" that Microsoft is coming out with. They are all connected so in a sense, they are their own "Social".
so what you're saying is 'The Social' = 'Live'
it's not terribly far fetched and Microsoft does have to start integrating everything to keep Jobs & Co at bay. Actually they already have started that.
Well yes "Live" could also play into the roll. Mostly I'm talking about technology in general. Especially from Microsoft is going to end up part of "The Social". I don't think that the phrase "The Social" is Microsoft's short term thing for Zunes. I think that it is a long term meaning for all of technology in general. Everything working together. Wireless syncing with your computer.(maybe with your 360)Synchronizing wirelessly with everyone and everything.(Phones, PCs, Gaming Consuls, everything)This is just the beginning of "The Social".
if the Zune could stream video to other Zunes... damn, that would be a killer app. You could actually watch a video with someone else without splitting the earbuds and crowding around the screen. Of course, that might be straining the meaning of 'with'...
Its funny. It wasn't until this post that I remembered there was a new version of the Zune out. Its that awesome!
It wasn't until that post that anyone knew you were a troll!
I wasn't trying to be troll like. For that I apologize (though you do seem to be extremely defensive on this one). I was simply being honest. If someone had asked me to describe a Zune, it would have been rev 1 Zune. Thats all I was saying.
Sorry if it sounded troll like. I hate trolls.
@Engadget:
When they said that they were getting rid of "The Social", I believe you read it wrong...I'm pretty sure they were leaving behind the tagline "Welcome to the Social" for their new one, "You make it you."
-kh
I thought that the Zune social was going to discontinued, anyway I hope that this Zune does worse than first one, so microsoft will eventually die and APPLE WILL RULE THE WORLD 4EVER. (just kidding ... what was drinking :)
"The Social" is no longer the tagline of advertising.
As you can clearly see in the devices though, they call wireless sharing "Social" on the Zune interface. So instead of saying "When you go into Wireless Sharing" they say "When you go into the Social".
What did Microsoft say when you asked them? You did ask them right? ....like a reporter?
Before it was the Zune people were bashing, now it's a tagline.
personally I don't care what tagline they use, version one works like a charm for me, I can only imagine version two with it's updated interface, firmware and the new marketplace and all the other new features.
Next people will be bitching about a pixel being off on the inteface,…come Microsoft make me a brown zune80.
Engadget:
Please, try to think things through for once. Zune not only will have a Social option on the menu, but a site called the Social for networking. MS was going to abandon "Welcome to the Social" for "You make it you". They will still call their wireless sharing and internet sharing "the Social". The Social is still in existence, and probably will be for a while. MS just dropped it into the background, choosing to focus on the player's customization this time around. So, get used to it. The social is still here. The social will be here. There will not be a "Goodbye from the Social" anytime soon.
Oh, and by the way, this definitely refers to the On-computer social, not the Zune device social. You will probably be able to share links to YouTube or some Zune equivalent.
Who the hick did write down this article?
1. We already knew that Zune team are going to have shared short clips through Zune Marketplace.
2. Social is a freakin feature you lame dumb! It was also the tag line of the G1 Zune but since it is going to be a world wide web feature they decided to drop the word "Social" from the tag line in order to give the new "Social" feature the same importance of other new stuff in the Zune 2.
Congratulations, you just used dumb as a noun. You win the bad at English award.
I gave him +1, it was funny to read because of his grammar.
WTHick, you guys did might be racist no? jk
Did I also mention that I have a PhD in English Literature?! Oh yeah, I just did. Looky me, an English f**king teacher.
Don't sweat it, Saad.
I'm sure you're aware that when people can't attack the ideas, they attack the person presenting them.
It always amazes me how quickly people become grammarians in order to completely miss the point of a post. :)
I think part of the reason MS dropped the "social" aspect on the original Zune is because they got a lot of flack for it being crippleware - because you couldn't actually do very much wirelessly. The new Zune2 is supposed to have a ton more wireless features, so they can actually promote them with a straight face.
I actually just bought a Zune - one of the brown $80 refurbs from woot.com. It's a nice piece of hardware - decent interface (not quite iPod but way better than my old Creative Zen Micro) and very nice screen and device, but the software is awful - it literally took me 3 hours to get it run on my PC, and the fact that it scours your hard drive and tries to cramma-lamma all your music in the device the first time you run it is a pain when you have a 35 gig mp3 collection and a 30 gig Zune.
The Zune Social is not the Zune device.
It is a website.
it's referring to ZuneSocial.net
http://www.zunesocial.net
I thought you guys were on top of these things.....
They should integrate (is it the right word? english is not my first language) the Zune with Facebook, now that MS owns part of that company. I cant imagine how, though, but I guess someone at MS is creative enough to find a way.
Yes. Yes it is.
It's funny because most people who have English as a second language have better grammar in their posts than the English-speaking noobs, of the "ZOON ROXORS TEH BIG ONE1111!" type.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/microsoft-zune/rumor-smashed-no-zune-video-share-319751.php
Yeah, the video sharing apparently refers to sharing via http://www.zunesocial.net.
Something of interest from the gizmodo article:
"We spoke with Microsoft and they told us that no, the new Zunes cannot transfer video from device to device..."
You mean, Gizmodo actually asked Microsoft about this rumor like real reporters?? Whoever heard of such a thing!!
Engadget, in case you can't tell, that's aimed at you!
for the videos on the marketplace...can u get those free with the zune pass? like aslong as you have the zune pass..you can get videos?
Hasn't everyone noticed yet, That Ryan just likes bashing Microsoft. He bash's Zune, Vista and anything else he can made by Microsoft. I never had a problem with my Zune from day 1, Vista is rock solid and runs perfect. I have had twice as many problem with a clean install of Leopard in one week than I have with had Vista for a year. And I would trade Zune and Zune pass for a iPod and Itunes in a million years.(I do like my iPhone though)
Everyone needs to get your heads out of your assles before you wake up with Mr. Jobs telling what to do and then overpricing you for his s**t products.
