Sony's PS2 updated with integrated power supply, no price cut
While you're holding out for a slimmer, $99 PS2 Sony has gone ahead and released a new model in Japan. The SCPH-90000 with integrated power adapter hits Japan on November 22nd for ¥16,000 or about $140 -- that's the same price as the SCPH-79000 model already available. Besides that internal power supply, we're not seeing anything new. ¥1,500 (about $13) will buy you the optional vertical stand. Hurting for gaming profits are we Sony? Oh, right.

Yeah, they may be hurting but so did all companies. I bet this blogging site will die in 3-5 years too. Sony did a pretty good job in the past and maybe in the future they will come back kinda like Nintendo. I don't think the Gamecube was the best seller in the gaming world when it came out. But they bounced back with the DS and Wii. To me (my opinion)I still believe PS2 is the best console ever made then the Wii.

Holy crap you're an idiot.
Twitchy @ Nov 6th 2007 2:16AM
Smart thinking there Sony - stop backwards compatibility for the PS3 and keep the PS2 truckin'.
Jon @ Nov 6th 2007 2:17AM
No power brick is good. My launch PS2 slim is still going strong but if it eventually breaks, this integrated PSU version will fit in nicely.
feffrey @ Nov 6th 2007 2:21AM
why make a new one? I would rather have one of original sized ps2 for $50. Do that and I will buy one.
Geir E @ Nov 6th 2007 7:05AM
The reason for price cut is the miniturization of the components. chips that does what multiple chips did before. So the original would not be as cheap to make as the new smaller one.
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Nov 6th 2007 2:32AM
Why drop the price if the PS2 is still selling well? First of all, because hey, more money is more money. Second of all, because when the PS2 sales do drop, they can then cut the price and get a PR/sales bump out of it.
It's weird. Sony is the only one of the big 3 who still sells their previous-gen console, and they're still selling a lot of them. And somehow, some people want to find fault with that.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Nov 6th 2007 7:19AM
Last time I checked PS2 was selling below even PS3. Far below Wii.
PS2 games on other side are hot. Because they are cheap as dirt right now. Also you can pick a PS2+games on eBay for literally nothing.
Tony C @ Nov 6th 2007 8:13AM
Ihar: When Sony can sell anywhere from 10k-16k PS2's a month in Japan, there's no reason to stop now making them now, is there?

Tony C @ Nov 6th 2007 8:15AM
Well hey, how about that -- Sony sells those numbers EVERY WEEK, not every month.
Derbeste @ Nov 6th 2007 2:18PM
Ever think that Sony HAS to be the only to sell their previous system because they are the only one still taking MASSIVE losses on their current console?
Or maybe because that previous console is the only way you'll be playing PS2 games since the PS3 is the ONLY console now to not have some sort of BC?
Adam @ Nov 7th 2007 2:11AM
Integrated PSU means more heat! More heat = more meltdown and shorted playtime!
Joe Templeman @ Nov 7th 2007 5:45AM
I'm guessing that sony might have thought of that BEFORE developing and releasing it, and they might just have made sure that your console DIDN'T melt whilst playing...just a thought.
:/
Sageco @ Nov 6th 2007 3:24AM
Well, since I've never owned a PS2, this is only more motivation to buy it; but iw ish they made it cheaper.
Philometalist @ Nov 6th 2007 3:35AM
Nice to see a revised stand, the first rendition always seemed a bit unstable to me.
DGAR @ Nov 6th 2007 3:51AM
Anyone know if there is a PS3 wireless controller module for the PS2? I've seen the wired solutions, but no thanks.
I already gave away my old PS2, but I'm thinking the only way I'm going to buy another is if it's a modded version that is able to utilize the PS3 controller.
Joe_Templeman @ Nov 6th 2007 4:45AM
I think its impressive that sony can still make money on a console which is 7 years old.
Its a testament to how good it is
Samir Benahmed @ Nov 6th 2007 4:59AM
I think the PS2 is actually a better looking console than the PS3 as well and without a doubt the best console ever. I'll buying the newest one when it is released. It will be amazing :D
kii @ Nov 6th 2007 5:34AM
The redesign looks good. Even cleaner, sexier than the old slim, especially the white SKU.
Maybe Sony's ramping up the new PS2 production early and will drop the price to 99$ this holiday season ?
I think bundling PS2 with wireless controllers is not a good thing and will drive the price up too high. 99$ is the new sweet spot for the mass consumer market, and perfect gift for Xmas.
Billy Kincaid @ Nov 6th 2007 8:11AM
That white one is tha shiznit!
wrabbit @ Nov 6th 2007 9:52AM
So is it the same size as the slim but w/ integrated power supply or is it actually a bit bigger?
Dan @ Nov 6th 2007 12:09PM
PS2 is clearly winning the console war still ;)
greatslack @ Nov 6th 2007 12:16PM
It looks like they switched back to a slot-loading drive for this new one, which is definitely a nice improvement over the previous version.
K_G @ Nov 6th 2007 1:05PM
The front buttons look a bit more streamlined but it looks like the same disk door opening mechanism as the current PS2 slim...ie, the door hinges out....not slot loading.
Concura @ Nov 6th 2007 6:24PM
actually, if you compare the photo of the new slim versus the current slim ps2 model on sale (type "ps2 slim" in Google and look up images), you'll notice the casing is more "streamlined", more continuous with less vent holes. Looking at the slot on front, that might just possibly be a slot loading tray.
I wouldn't be surprised. I'd buy it in a heartbeat

All I know is that its still kicking ass from its generation of Gamecube, Dreamcast, and Xbox; and into the world of Wii, PS3, and 360. I would buy my third one if they made a built in monitor at the same price.
