Buffalo intros pair of LinkTheater HD media streamers
No interest in a shiny new NAS from Buffalo? No worries, as the firm is hoping to play on your AV emotions too with a new duo of HD media streamers. Part of the tight-knit LinkTheater family, the LT-H90LAN and LT-H90WN each feature USB 2.0 connectivity, an Ethernet jack, analog / digital audio outputs and HDMI / composite connectors. Furthermore, the pair plays nice with a slew of files including AAC, MPEG2/3, WMA, JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, VOB, WMV, ASF, AVI and H.264, but unfortunately, DivX / XviD weren't invited to the party. Nevertheless, those who still think this would fit the bill can snap up the wired-only LT-H90LAN for ¥21,000 ($184) or the 802.11a/b/g/n-enabled LT-H90WN for ¥31,700 ($277) later this month.

They just put out a product which alienates nearly the entire market segment this is meant for.
What 40yr old , housewife or her used-car salesman husband would use this thing?
Lets not dilude ourselves....its made for the people of planet Bittorus. That planet is ruled by a certain General Divx and his second in command Commander Xvid.

I've got no basis for this, but i'd be willing to bet that divx/xvid are supported, given that prior versions have had at least limited support. Seems unlikely theyd remove features as the product line advances.

No divx/xvid? no dice.

I wonder what the interface is like.. anyway to survive the market they need to do one better than Apple Tv and support other video formats, Stage6 boxes are coming cant wait.
BFish @ Nov 7th 2007 3:41PM
According to link this player is specifically approved by 'copyright mafia' and that's why it lacks divx/xvid which is enough to doom this machine :)

This stuff looks so VCR 1980s...

Wierd, I have the old generation LinkTheater DVD player and it does Divx/Xvid. Wonder why they dropped these codecs in this player? WTH were they thinking? Haven't they EVER D/L'd a vid torrent? Uh.. me either.

I'll keep holding out for the Linux version of XBMC.

Same here, Eric.

No xvid is a joke. What are they thinking?
James @ Nov 7th 2007 7:20PM
if that VOB support can be confirmed, I'd be the first to jump on this device. I've got a slew of movie titles on my Dell (600+ in VOB format) that would be great to stream around the house, though I'd hard wire it to the network.
Wolfticket @ Nov 7th 2007 7:31PM
This will support divx/xvid, even if it doesn't explicitly say so in the specs. I place my reputation (but no money) on it.

I don't like the design of the remote. What were they thinking when they put the play/pause/nav buttons at the top and the volume and channel select rocker buttons at the bottom? It's not going to work if the buttons aren't "thumb-centric".
