Apple posts firmware v1.1.2 -- goodbye jailbreak!

- Extracting software... restarting... iTunes successfully upgraded to 1.1.2.
- The "slide for emergency" slider flashed through different languages while it was waiting to be plugged in again.
- It's activated, pulled the backup data, and restarted -- success! Officially on 1.1.2.
- Testing jailbreakme.com... looks like they broke jailbreak! Yep, it's broken alright.
- Not really finding any new features -- certainly no new icons, no voice memos, nothing obvious about disk mode. Anyone else finding anything?
- Looks like international keyboards are finally enabled! Score one for everyone overseas who can't use their now-relocked iPhone.
- A few reports are coming in that their iPhone is "much faster now" (not that we remember ours being slow at all before). Maybe Apple made some performance tweaks this update.
- Can anyone confirm whether TurboSIM is working with this update?
[Thanks, Brett]

For Windows users: Hold Shift and click the Update option
Thanks to Guiltyblade for the heads up
Philipp @ Nov 8th 2007 10:19PM
Dont believe dahdout... the new firmware is killing unlocked iphones!
Ricochet @ Nov 8th 2007 10:24PM
So jailbreakme.com is broken... all that proves is that they fixed the .TIFF exploit in mobile Safari.
Try using another tool such as iNdependence which communicated using the iTunes.dll (probably want to use a 7.4 version of iTunes) and see whether that can still activate/jailbreak it. That will be more interesting to see if further steps have been taken, or whether it's just a simple Safari bugfix.
ChrisG @ Nov 8th 2007 10:24PM
Since jailbreakme.com didn't work, can u please see if any of the other methods like iBrickr and iFuntastic work.
Paul @ Nov 8th 2007 10:25PM
AppSnap doesn't work (big surprise there), and all third-party apps are gone, iToner still works and the battery icon now shows up in iTunes
jason Zara @ Nov 8th 2007 10:27PM
there are no voice memos or disk mode this update sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!
todd evans @ Nov 8th 2007 10:30PM
im still having trouble installing this thing on the mac. i did the alt+apple thing and browse to the folder but i dont have an ipsw file. is it hidden or something? which file do i select.
pm9141 @ Nov 8th 2007 10:40PM
You are downloading the file as a zip file and it is extracted into a folder. The actually folder will be copied to trash. Find it and copy it somewhere and remove the .zip extension. You should be able to pick that file from iTunes restore.
jason Zara @ Nov 8th 2007 10:32PM
select the .zip file
glxyjones @ Nov 8th 2007 10:42PM
you have to turn off "open safe files after downloading" in safari or else it will automatically decompress, which you don't want.
after you turn that off, download it again and you'll be left with just the zip file. pick that in itunes and you're golden.
todd evans @ Nov 8th 2007 10:53PM
thanks guys . . . made me feel like a newb for a minute
Paul @ Nov 8th 2007 10:32PM
There's now a custom ringtones menu over the standard list in the sounds section.
dan @ Nov 8th 2007 10:34PM
O RLY?
jason Zara @ Nov 8th 2007 10:35PM
no there isnt what are u talking about homie?
Paul @ Nov 8th 2007 10:37PM
Yeah, its nifty. I'm synching right now, so I don't know what else is new, but itoner definitely works.
Paul @ Nov 8th 2007 10:47PM
You have to reinstall your ringtones with itoner and go to the ringtones section.
dan @ Nov 8th 2007 10:32PM
apparently iToner still works, can anyone confirm this?? that would be a most excellent turn of events!!!
yoyodude64 @ Nov 8th 2007 10:36PM

Greenkirby21 @ Nov 8th 2007 10:39PM
I have an unmodded iphone (i originally did have it modded but once 1.1 came out i restored it, haven had time to mod it since), so I will install it and tell you guys if its worth it :P
pm9141 @ Nov 8th 2007 10:39PM
I installed the new firmware and it says Version 1.1.2 (3B48b). Browsing to jailbreakme.com and clicking on install AppSnapp takes to the y.tiff page but it does nothing. I guess they closed the tiff exploit hole. Still trying to figure out what actually they have in this firmware update.
Dimplemonkey @ Nov 9th 2007 12:23AM
If I remember correctly, they said their latest update would only work on iPhones with firmware 1.1.1.
Drew @ Nov 8th 2007 10:41PM
Mine is jailbroke, will it brick me? I'm on ATT?
Any new features? HOPEFULLY improved battery life..
Boyd1080 @ Nov 8th 2007 10:42PM
New Feature #1:
Battery Charge Indicator in the Source List (much like that of the 6th gen iPod and 3rd gen iPod nanos that we saw with the release of iTunes 7.5)
dan @ Nov 8th 2007 10:43PM
I only notice new languages/keyboard
spencer @ Nov 8th 2007 10:46PM
i have my phone jailbreaked, but, if i update it will it brick it...??
John @ Nov 8th 2007 10:47PM
Don't get me wrong, I love engadget...
but this whole process with new firmwares and what works and what doesn't is becoming tedious...
It's not really news anymore is it?
insertAlias @ Nov 8th 2007 11:14PM
It's news to those of us who happen to own the device, or the people who are thinking of buying it.
I can only say this so many times. If you don't care about the post, just *skip it!* You don't have to read about it. It only takes up a little real estate on the page, and it's not like they are skipping another story to report this one.
Personally, I hope they keep up this kind of coverage. Not just about the iPhone either. I hope that they blow out the coverage on the Zune firmware. I hope they keep talking about the Eee PC. I hope they keep reporting every bit of news, even the stuff I may not personally be interested in. Because someone else may be. And I don't want them skipping stories that may happen to be interesting to me.
You waste more time by opening the article and commenting that just scrolling past it. Please, for the love of god everybody, just skip the articles you don't like. Because they might start listening to you, and then I would have to find some other place to get all the blowout coverage of every cool device that I want.
Chuck Konfrst @ Nov 8th 2007 10:51PM
It's certainly more responsive than 1.1.1. I haven't found any new features yet - same ol' same ol' other than expanded international options in the Settings menu.
thegrey @ Nov 8th 2007 10:51PM
woot. iPhone is much faster then before.
ChrisG @ Nov 8th 2007 10:53PM
Crap!! They even disabled TurboSim!!
Ricochet @ Nov 8th 2007 10:56PM
Your own findings or do you have a source for this?
ChrisG @ Nov 8th 2007 11:18PM
I found a source on hackint0sh.org, I'm not one hundred percent sure because right now in the hackint0sh forums there is a lot of hoopla even claims of people unlocking 1.1.2. here's a few links. Guy who claims TurboSim doesn't work: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15187
and Someone who also claims of hardend security that don't allow for the phone feature under 1.1.2.
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15191
yoyodude64 @ Nov 8th 2007 10:55PM
yea it works faster, also has keybaord support for many languages. also batterly life indicator inside itunes. no big news for me--im a good iphone user and i dont hack my phone lol
JimD @ Nov 8th 2007 10:57PM
When are they going to fix the damn e-mail? I'm tired of deleting e-mail one at a time...TWICE!!!!!
Zeke @ Nov 8th 2007 11:18PM
Not sure what error you're talking about, but everyone has different settings. I suggest using IMAP if your provider supports it, that will probably solve your problem :-)
Brendan09 @ Nov 8th 2007 10:59PM
sooner or later apple is going to get smart in realizing that people won't update their jailbroken iphones. I could easily see apple implementing a system for the wifi store on the iphone that won't let you use it unless your running the newest software. They did it with iTunes, they'll probably due it with the iTunes wifi.
Kyrra @ Nov 8th 2007 11:07PM
They mainly disabled older versions of iTunes due to DRM changes or something of that sort. There are multiple reasons (both technical and marketing) that Apple could "force" people to upgrade. We'll just have to see what Apple does as time goes on.
As far as Jailbroken iPhones... I don't know a single person that has hacked their iPhone yet (I know around 10 people with iPhones). As big a deal as Engadget and other tech sites make jail breaking to be, I don't think a large portion of the iPhone populous is hacking their iPhone. Be it that they don't care, or they don't want to screw with their warranty.
Drew @ Nov 8th 2007 11:02PM
When restoring do I lose my numbers??
MattO @ Nov 8th 2007 11:16PM
No, you don't lose anything...
(That is if you are using a stock, never been unlocked iPhone)
John Doe @ Nov 8th 2007 11:12PM
Alternatively, one can get something that isn't a locked down pile of shit.
insertAlias @ Nov 8th 2007 11:17PM
Go away. There is enough room in this world for many, many phones.
Please, just go away.
