Apple posts firmware v1.1.2 -- goodbye jailbreak!

- Extracting software... restarting... iTunes successfully upgraded to 1.1.2.
- The "slide for emergency" slider flashed through different languages while it was waiting to be plugged in again.
- It's activated, pulled the backup data, and restarted -- success! Officially on 1.1.2.
- Testing jailbreakme.com... looks like they broke jailbreak! Yep, it's broken alright.
- Not really finding any new features -- certainly no new icons, no voice memos, nothing obvious about disk mode. Anyone else finding anything?
- Looks like international keyboards are finally enabled! Score one for everyone overseas who can't use their now-relocked iPhone.
- A few reports are coming in that their iPhone is "much faster now" (not that we remember ours being slow at all before). Maybe Apple made some performance tweaks this update.
- Can anyone confirm whether TurboSIM is working with this update?
[Thanks, Brett]

Now what i want to know is even though it will remove any "3rd Party" apps installed on the touch, do we still get to keep our Maps/Notes (theoretically they're 1st party apps). Pretty Please Steve. I'll be your Best Friend Forever. You'll even be invited to my next birthday.
Alternatively, one can get something that isn't a locked down pile of shit.
Go away. There is enough room in this world for many, many phones.
Please, just go away.
Does iToner still work?
Ryan thanks for the info.. first image you missed the most importang thing of the the BB version.. ok it's 04.02.13_G we know now.
How do i get this to work once i download it? I'm using windows vista and i'm slow or something because i can't get itunes to recognize it.
All I want is for Apple to open up the iPhone for 3rd Party Developers. I know it's supposed to happen in February--but that's too long.
-- Karim Baz
Were the ringtones selections seperated into Custom and Standard before? I see that now after my update.
The iPhone negative black effect on movies and photos is now gone from my iPhone with this update. It was doing it horribly and it no longer is doing it.
I just want to have a multiple delete.. that's all I'm asking.
I just can't believe they keep ignoring this.
I love it. If I had a hammer, I'd hammer it on jailbreaks, or my name ain't Steve Jobs. Indy Raceway is also known as the Brickyard. Maybe that's where they should bury all the bricked iPhones from this firmware update. Cool. I hope Apple comes out with 1.1.2.1, 1.1.2.2, 1.1.2.3, etc. every few days. That'll keep the hackers on their toes. They won't actually get a chance to use their iPhones because they'll be too busy trying to jailbreak it.
It's a pity that the hackers can't spend more time trying to break the BlackBerry push e-mail server or at least try to bring it down every other day. Now that would be a challenge.
Fail.
After updating my iPhone to 1.1.2, I tried to downgrade to 1.0.2, but it didn't work on Leopard/iTunes 7.5.
While trying to restore firmware 1.0.2, all previous jailbreak softwares; AppTrap, INdependence and iFuntastic quit upon me with various errors. I don't think you can downgrade directly from 1.1.2 at least in Leopard + iTunes 7.5. I have Tiger backup with iTunes 7.4, I will try to downgrade booting from backup. Hopefully, I can jailbreak again and have the third party apps.
Restoring to 1.1.2 worked OK and that is the beauty of iPhone, you can always restore it :-)
If I wanted this much hassle in a phone I would have gotten a Windows Mobile phone. You see Steve, treating your "fans/customers" like their over-reaching daddy does you no good.
can anyone tell me how to use this with windows vista?
On Vista: just download the file, open itunes plug on your iphone, on the summary page hold down the shift key and click(left) on "check for updates" wait for a file dialog box to come up, locate the file and click open. It will install from that point
Hey guys, i was wondering, if i went out and purchased an Iphone tomorrow wouild it automatically have the firmware 1.12 on it? and if not is it mandatory that i update? or even if i purchased one already, do they make you update via itunes or is it up to me?
Ringtones are now separated by custom and normal.
I have read tis a few time so far in the comments, but where exactly can I see this? The iPhone or iTunes?
There is a Caps Lock option now.
Where?
been there since 1.0
Caps Lock has always been there. I have it on my 1.1.1 right now. Enable it under General>Keyboard>Enable Caps Lock. Then double-tap the shift button to use it.
Damn. Wish I would have found it back then. Nothing like typing a letter, hitting shift, typing letter, hitting shift...
OK TurboSim is officially screwed
I made a post about it over here:

I get all of this, but factually, WM6 isn't bad. I'm using a tytn II and couldnt be happier. It does everything well, apart from suck juice, which it does brilliantly. Contest the issues, bitch at Apple, whatever, but be correct. I use vista, on a pc with serious performance and sync with the software. Couldnt be happier. The iphone is pretty, but lacks functionality for me. THAT is a fact..
iPhoneRingtoneMaker still works after the update. Much better than $2 a ringer.
Has iTunes gotten wise to the existence of 1.1.2?
More like goodbye Jailbait...Even the lame PM at my work has an iPhone.. when does the gPhone arrive so I can be a street g
AT&T trying to hold onto their share, when they know Apple could cash in $$ with this phone. I will agree it is sweet, but maybe I'll wait for a gggg GphOnE

Does anybody know if the update will allow a O2 SIM to work in a phone that was purchased in the US and activated on AT&T?
If so, picking up a pre-paid O2 when traveling to the UK would be a sweet option.
could someone who installs this update, PLEASE tell me which languages there are to choose from... it could give a hint of which countries are coming next, within a short time period...
German, French are the obvious ones.... Swedish, Danish, Norwegian? Spanish, Italian, ????
SOMEBODY!? :D
French, German, Italian.
There is also something about Asian fonts where you can pick between Chinese and Japanese.
"Region Format" under the "International" settings lists: Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Hong Kong SAR China, India, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, U.S. Virgin Islands, UK, US, Zimbabwe, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Germany.
The iPhone is supposed to come out the South Africa (where I live) somewhere this month. But is going to be EXTREMELY expensive here. =( Will have to get a US iPhone and unlock it.
It is undoubtedly running smoother. I havent found any new features except for the ringtones. It is much more stable, and the internet doesnt crash while you're listening to itunes. So far i'm very glad i upgraded.
The battery status for the phone now shows up next to the name of the iPhone under the device list.
ZOMG MY LIFE IS RUINED lol. Give it time, fanbois.
TSIM method not working anymore, cannot call in/out but GPRS(EDGE) still working.
But still workable after downgrade to 1.0.2(1.1.1 should be fine also) w/ new modem firmware 04.02.13_G.
hackthheiphone dot com is claiming dot twelve is jailbroken already details to come
oh,nice! Thank you!

Negative black still exists. Week 38 iPhone, 7 series screen.
I can 100% confirm that my iPhone runs REALLY well with 1.1.2. With 1.1.1 and prior, after having the phone on for a while, the phone began to slow down a bit (10-20% slower than on a fresh start). I wonder if 1.1.2 will have the same problem. Although, at this point, I am much much happier with my iPhone now that they have made the interface much more responsive. EVERYTHING so far is faster; Safari, main menu, submenus, iPod menu... everything!
Anyone know why iTunes isn't aware of the update yet?
It's fine to 'jilabreak' but for what reason - just to load apps? I have access to 20 of the most important apps - one of the jailbreak apps touted is a WEATHER one - not only is there a freakin' button on my phone, I can look up in the sky ... the iphone has access to some 10,000 apps online - how many more do I need? How many apps do you HAVE TO LOAD on your palm or WM one because the apps that came with the phone are crap? I used a palm, a treo and a win phone - they were at best middling with 3 apps and not so great with the other 40 ... MS took 9 years to copy palm, an OS from the 1980's ...
Not everyone enjoys signing 2-year contracts in the fast moving world of cell phones. Not everyone would use AT&T, even if AT&T paid *them*.
@ joseph
WHAAAAT???
it looks to me a dog RACE between Cupertino and the OPEN brothers. Who's ahead of the RACE? I think at the end, the OPEN brothers are going to win..on top of that, the Cupertino boys are getting paid for the race while the OPEN bros are having fun racing with the cupertino boys. Let's see how long it takes before the next jailbreaking....I can almost bet it won't take 24 hours or maybe 72 hours before the next jailbreak hits.
I just wish the Cupertino boys can give up half way through the RACE and let the OPEN brothers win since they've got nothn 2 lose. Besides, it should be a glory to the Cupertino boys that their stuff is of high interest to the public...or may be they'll get the message when el-jobso comes into the race.
I know a lot of people get frustrated with the lack of 3rd party apps on the phone from when released up to now, but to me I kind of like it that way. Let me explain. I came from WM5/6 devices like the Dash and PPC6700 and I modded the heck out of those phones with 3rd party apps and registry tweaks etc. To tell you the truth shortly after doing all that modding the phones lost my interest. Many of the apps I removed because they fouled up the phone and I became uninterested very quickly. It was like taking that really good looking girl home and having your way with her then after feeling like "Meh, whats next".
The way Apple is handling these updates keeps me interested and even if the updates are only minor I'm always looking forward to what the next thing might be. This to me allows the iPhone to maintain that newness factor along with the fact that the device itself is very slick as it is. You can have all the functionality you want (and I had that with the PPC) but HTC etc still cannot touch Apple design IMO. And Apple will catch up on the native app side. I dont mind waiting, it allows the phone to continue to feel new to me.
Also I installed the jailbreak, played around for a few days and found myself restoring back to 1.1.1. The only app I could see myself using alot was Apollo IM. The other stuff was ok but was nothing press stoppping.
So thats just a different viewpoint. I like the incremental releases. Crazy huh?
... but then which file do you select? The .zip turns into a folder.
The unzipped .zip file should be in your Trash. Put in on the desktop. Go to iTunes. Option click Check for Updates. Navigate to the .zip file on your desktop. Bravo!
Help! I just finished updating mine but I've lost all my songs and stuff (I updated using my father's iMac - in Brasil - but I live in California, use AT&T and my iPhone was never unlocked, jail-broke, etc.
Can we return to the issue at hand. The new 1.1.2 update. After installing the new AppSnap...not the old one from few days ago. Today in the Installs is a new App Tweek called 'OKtoPrep' This apparentlly is a preparation for the 1.1.2 update to allow for Onetouch installation of the Newest AppSnap Applications or at least a Prep for a new wy in.
Has anyone installed 1.1.2 with OKtoPrep installed?
It does make it much faster but I am not sure if that is because of the restore. I noticed in engadgets comments they said not like theirs was slow. Does anyone else not have problems when they jail break it? When I add 3rd party apps or jailbreak my phone and I have had 2 so far it slows to a crawl and hangs and freezes alot. I would rather wait for approved apps if it is going to make my act like a windows machine every-time I jail break mine.
Hi all,
possibly a stupid question but I was under the impression the iphone didnt have Bluetooth? why is the logo in the pics?
That's because it has bluetoth
It has Bluetooth, but right now it's only to connect a headset for hands-free calling.
ah right thanks for the reply.
is it being shipped with bluetooth activated or was this discovered?
can its usage be expanded with 3rd party apps?
is this hardware in the ipod touch?
cheers
what is edgesuite.net? Is anyone worried this is not being downloaded from a real Apple server??
Edgesuite is a service sold to Apple by Akamai. It's a content distribution network that places stuff like this in a data centre near you. It uses clever dynamic DNS to make the hostname resolve to an IP address that is near you. Companies like Apple do this to reduce costs and improve performance. Service provides (like my employer) host them because they reduce our costs too.
Oh Akamai used to use a different URL back when I was working with them. Makes sense though, thanks.
you can add events to your calender w/o jailbreak
Touch-Commander.com, provides sliding "one touch" access to phone calls, emails, SMS messages, calendar functions, pictures, music, videos and other applications and commonly used content.
Touch Commander is much the same as the finger touch scrolling, browsing, and spinning of a three dimensional interface by the finger, that is found on the Apple iPhone and the TouchPhone by HTC.
AND it appears you can add your own ringtones again with this version!

I hate fanboys! There is nothing wrong with the iphone or WM6 devices. They both server their purposes. I have used WM for years, and enjoyed the flexibility of 3rd party apps, but as someone already mentioned I really only use my phone for email, and watching over my appointments, contacts, and tasks. BUT I was so tired of carrying multiple devices, so I got an iphone so I could have my tunes and do business too. I have been introduced to the first truly enjoyable hand held web browsing ever! I love the fluidity of the device and ready to useability of the whole thing. It is awesome.
Heres the thing... iphone was released unfinished to get it to the masses just prior to the holiday season. They will make billions off of the current iphone. THEN they will release a much better version (iphone2?) with many things that people are gripping about (no IM, no flash, shockwave, other plugins for Safari, native 3rd party apps)and make even more money off of all the people (like me) that want it all and their itunes too. While it is all about feature rich experiences, and looking cool while in line at Carl's Junior for us, what it is really all about is making money, even for guru Steve! Apple is a corporate beast too (just like that other OS company) lest we all forget... (winces at the fanboy smack).
I have been enjoying my iPhone since I recently purchased it. I waited a little while to see how it was going to work out seeing as they launched it a bit early. Apple did a great job distinguishing themselves in a market that is very tough to break into.
It would be nice if they would release a security fix for running as root on the iPhone. I wonder if this is the reason I cannot download pics from my emails to my phone or save a picture off of the internet? Why isn't there any multi-media messaging?
Other things I would like to see as well are:
fwd capability of txt msging.
Landscape feature for all apps. I love the larger keyboard that way.
Complete bluetooth capability for iTunes. When I listen to music on my headset it still plays from the external speakers.
I would also like to see my background picture all the time...not just when I slide open the phone.
They should release a theme creator as well. I loved using it with my Sony phone. Sony provided it free of charge.
A larger gig hard drive like the touch.
I am excited to see what the sdk is going to bring to the phone. People can harp on the iPhone all they want...it holds its own.
Why wouldnt Apple (BTW I'm also one of those who thinks i got a right to say what Apple should DO)sell their iPhone off the counter as any other pda/phone device currently on the market. I mean, let's do the simple maths here. iPhone sells for $399 (US) and apperantly you have to sign up with AT&T with plans going as high as $149/month over 24 months, out of which Apple makes 25% at the most. That is $894 + $399 = $1293 (the price of an N95^)at the best outcome for Apple. if the device was sold without locked in silly contracts, i'm sure Apple would've sold a lot more than the disappoining numbers so far. I'm using one now and everyone that checks it out wants one. However, none of them would sign up for expensive contracts when telecommunication prices are record low, so stuff the iPhone. Plus they can buy them unlocked for $600(as I did) and use it with their $30/month contract ... bargain!
Is it just me thats noticed the best new feature in 1.1.2 that you can now see if your getting GPRS or and EDGE connection, the symbol is a blank square if your getting just GPRS and the blue square with the letter 'E' in if your getting EDGE.
apples 3rd party application stuff is gonna be bs. how about you just install them out of the box? like wm6? sounds good to me
I have tried the 1.1.2 update and it sucks. It brick the phone and restore to 1.1.1 is almost impossible.
So to get back and restore to 1.1.1 look here.

this finally worked (out of the box I had 1.1.1)

What happens when you install jailbreak, does the phone completely stop working, or will it just go back to the original settings.
