Instructions posted for downgrading iPhone from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1
It looks like those having regrets about upgrading their iPhone to the 1.1.2 firmware now have a means of bringing their prized device back to the comforts of 1.1.1, although the process is apparently not without its faults. According to the instructions recently posted on the Hackintosh forums, you'll first need to snag a copy of the 1.1.1 ipsw firmware file, then you simply follow three relatively easy steps to dial things back to 1.1.1, after which you'll have to follow a couple of additional steps to re-activate the phone itself. On the downside, it appears that IPSF won't work on an iPhone downgraded using these measures, although an update to fix that particular problem certainly doesn't seem to be out of the question. Hit up the read link below for the complete step-by-step details.

mine wont even update...
it says my phone is upto date :S
Shawn @ Nov 9th 2007 5:41PM
Same with mine.
rzlmlchm009 @ Nov 9th 2007 4:29PM
Is it normal to have to flash the firmware on a phone so much? I don't even like flashing the firmware on my PC that often.
hn333 @ Nov 9th 2007 5:22PM
That because Apple wants to take the control out of the users hands and in to theirs.
ethana2 @ Nov 9th 2007 6:48PM
which is sure as heck not where it belongs.
Android + Google's 700 MHz band is going to be frigging awesome. This insanity will come to an end.

Engadget, if you want to keep posting stuff like this constantly, make a sub site for this. Leave the hacking articles to the hacking sites. Thank you.
And, no, I do not want to be forced to use the Apple-less feed. Apple news is occasionally important stuff.
JosephMohmed @ Nov 9th 2007 4:40PM
You know, you could just not read it.
Rick @ Nov 9th 2007 4:40PM
If you don't like reading about a certain issue then use your mouse-wheel about 3 or 4 clicks down and don't read it. This was a useful post for many of us who want to revert back to 1.1.1.
Thanks Engadget.
Djunior80 @ Nov 9th 2007 4:40PM
Seriously...posts about the iphone's new version firmware being hacked are getting old. We already know that when version 1.1.3 is released, it will be hacked, when version 2.0 comes out it will be hack...now if the firmware updated things like MMS and other important features then it would be worth posting, but for now...IT'S OLD and REDUNDANT!
insertAlias @ Nov 9th 2007 4:49PM
Cut and pasted from one of my replies to similar sentiments expressed yesterday:
"
I can only say this so many times. If you don't care about the post, just *skip it!* You don't have to read about it. It only takes up a little real estate on the page, and it's not like they are skipping another story to report this one.
Personally, I hope they keep up this kind of coverage. Not just about the iPhone either. I hope that they blow out the coverage on the Zune firmware. I hope they keep talking about the Eee PC. I hope they keep reporting every bit of news, even the stuff I may not personally be interested in. Because someone else may be. And I don't want them skipping stories that may happen to be interesting to me.
You waste more time by opening the article and commenting that just scrolling past it. Please, for the love of god everybody, just skip the articles you don't like. Because they might start listening to you, and then I would have to find some other place to get all the blowout coverage of every cool device that I want."
supaneko @ Nov 9th 2007 5:16PM
Ooh... There's an Apple-less free.
Sir, I thank you. I didn't know there was such a thing. :)
Reader @ Nov 9th 2007 6:53PM
I like hearing about the iPhone getting hacked. Don't have one, won't ever most likely, but who doesn't love to see the futile lock-down efforts of a big corporation get thrown to the ground by a few people? This is even better then the PSP deal, so many people are working on the iPhone that it's protection doesn't even last a day.
decypher44 @ Nov 9th 2007 4:43PM
It seems that owning an iPhone is more hassle than it's worth.
rzlmlchm009 @ Nov 9th 2007 4:45PM
Funny. I always thought that about Macs, especially while I owned one.
Djunior80 @ Nov 9th 2007 4:52PM
@ decypher 44, I totally agree with you. Most cellphone users do not want to be hassled with updating the firmware on their phone every month when apple decides to release a firmware update that adds no new functionality. I am not bashing the iphone...both my girlfriend and my sister own one, but it is not something that they do on a constant basis...hell, I think my girlfriend is still running the original version because after she threw in the music she wanted in it, she has not bothered to plug it into itunes again.
Khris @ Nov 9th 2007 4:55PM
@ Djunior80
No one is FORCING you (or anyone) to update their iPhones with the new firmware.
Why is it Apple's fault that people are too stupid to realize what they're doing before they blindly click an "UPGRADE" button?
People need to take responsibility for their actions. You fuck up your iPhone, don't blame Apple.
Djunior80 @ Nov 9th 2007 5:01PM
@ Khris... read my post again...I never blamed apple for "fucking up my phone" ... I simply said that most users are not interested in updating firmware (especially if it adds no new functionality) every month. I also never said they FORCE you to upgrade...I clearly stated that my girlfriend is still running the original version of the firmware!
FANBOY!
Khris @ Nov 9th 2007 5:07PM
I own an iPhone.....and that's it. I'm far from a Fanboy. Perhaps you should look up the definition to refresh yourself.
My statements were of the "blanket" nature. I wasn't specifically pointing the finger at you. I'm sorry you took offense.
pooptypeuptypants @ Nov 9th 2007 4:51PM
unreal, another update? wtf? i wish everyone would stop with the unlocking or jailbreaking or whatever you want to call it and just wait for 3rd parties to get their hands on the Apple SDK and develop sofware that works without the hassle. enough already...
Khris @ Nov 9th 2007 5:04PM
My v1.1.1 iPhone works completely without hassle. WTF are you babbling on about?
joeyjoejoe @ Nov 9th 2007 5:00PM
Holy crap, enough already. This is worse than turning on ESPN and seeing Mike Vick coverage every two seconds.
yevon7 @ Nov 9th 2007 5:10PM
I think that Djunior80 was able to phrase it better than I did. Its just that it is indeed redundant and if you do care about this stuff, you could just go to a site about this. I am sure there are a lot of sites that do nothing but iPhone hacks.
I would skip these posts, but every other post seems to involve the iPhone in one way or another. It is raping my eyes and bombarding my RSS reader. I am not the only one with these views, either.
Why are you people so sensitive about this stuff anyways? Its a freaking gadget blog, lighten up...
Jay @ Nov 9th 2007 5:21PM
are most iphone hackers mentally disabled? i mean...you read about what its gonna do to your phone, you go through pains to update since its not on itunes yet, and then...you complain and say 'i want it back the way it was because i cant read!'
COME ON.
Constable Odo @ Nov 10th 2007 5:09PM
iPhone hackers are mentally disabled. They're the sort of personality that if you tell them not to play in traffic or they might get hurt, they're gonna run right out in traffic seeing how close they can dodge the moving vehicles. Of course if they get hit by a car or a truck, they'll say they had every right to play in the street and it's the driver that's responsible.
They just can't take responsiblity for their own stupid actions. Totally loco.
Homeboy @ Nov 9th 2007 5:28PM
A question to engadget: Will there be an iPhone bonanza everytime Apple releases an update? I seriously hope that you won't post tens of iPhone related entries like the the coming months everytime there is a new update.
Aaron @ Nov 9th 2007 5:30PM
I hope they DO!
Constable Odo @ Nov 9th 2007 8:15PM
Me too.
Not that I really care on way or another. I just want it to bug the people that don't like iPhone articles.
jay sea @ Nov 9th 2007 8:23PM
actually some people do.

Luke @ Nov 9th 2007 5:40PM
I like the new 1.1.2 update.
Everything seems a lot more stable. Scrolling through long lists of videos or photos used to be pretty juddery, now it's as smooth as butter :)
Obviously I like the 'new' calendar 'function' :)
When I used the accelerometer in Safari on a webpage it seemed REALLY rough, now THATS much better too.
Plus, is it me, or have they put in the 'closed captioning' option in Videos, the 'repeat' function in Photos, and the star rating of Albums in the iTunes Wifi Music Store? This probably was included since the start, I might have just not noticed it :S

Apple is either evil themselves or a whore to evil. They should quit fucking with users and focus on getting the iPhone working properly. Amazing how they can jump on a hack immediately and they fuck around for a year on releasing the SDK. Jobs is so full of shit he's about to burst!
stevesreed @ Nov 9th 2007 9:10PM
Jump on a hack? They closed a HUGE security hole. Just vising a web site could cause a hostile application to run on your phone!
Yeah people who hacked their phone got it patched, but 90% of iPhone users don't hack their phones and the tiff exploit was nasty.
I'm glad they fixed it.
J3 L U N T @ Nov 9th 2007 9:19PM
Do me a favor you damn hackers... PLEASE STOP JAILBREAKING FOR A BIT! I feel Apple is in a race to keep the iPhone locked and is turning their attention away from releasing any WORTHY updates... these updates are just counter measures against your hacking.
Let Apple concentrate on giving us some great apps and functionality like we are all waiting for...
THANK YOU.
MX-Drew @ Nov 16th 2007 4:00AM
If no one hack who would know the security flaws were there?
Chicken and egg.
stupidnoduhdude @ Nov 9th 2007 9:50PM
So I decided it would be worth it to go ahead and leave behind my jailbroken 1.11 software and give 1.1.2 a go.
I no longer have key feedback clicks in any of my apps, no text message notification sounds, and no click when I hit the sleep key or unlock my phone. Somehow, incoming call ringtones are still audible (ruling out any hardware problems).
Go figure, Apple has no clue what's going on, and I get to take a trip to my local Apple store for an evaluation.
Anyone else who has upgraded having this issue?
phinn @ Nov 10th 2007 12:46AM
What kind of idiot would upgrade to 1.1.2 anyway, 1.1.1 jailbreaked is more secure and has more features.
AdamRLeggett @ Nov 10th 2007 1:05AM
This thread over on MacRumors seems to suggest that after upgrading to 1.1.2 and 7.5 that the old ringtone rename trick to m4r works again.
As I'm not prepared to brick my iphone - I'm not trying it - but it sure sounds promising.

I need help (mpreilly) @ Nov 10th 2007 6:34PM
Mine is an unhacked, unadultered phone, although I did download the 1.1.2 update ahead of when iTunes offered it, presumably an hour later.
I have a locked sim. I set a PIN. Since the phone restarted, it says "SIM Locked Insert an unlocked and valid SIM," rather than say "enter your PIN, which, of course I know and could do. My phone has been useless for two days.
What's a boy to do about this? I'd prefer not to hack the phone. Anyone know how to help me? Please?
I need help (mpreilly) @ Nov 10th 2007 7:09PM
update, I took advice and put my SIM card into a friend's blackberry (ATT/Cingular blackberry, don't know if it mattered, but his SIM is identical to the iPhone's) I entered my PIN and in the blackberry's menu, I disabled PIN security for my card. Popped it back in iPhone and it restored from backup and is synching. I am relieved. I didn't realise how dependant I'd become on a cellphone.
marty @ Nov 13th 2007 12:51PM
To revert back from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2, you get 1.1.1 from your computer not the Apple website.
If you've updated your firmware to 1.1.1, which you have, it is located on your computer
It is located in C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates.
Bear in mind that Application Data is a hidden folder. If you do not see it, click Tools on the menu bar, then click on Folder Options, then Click the View tab and select show hidden files and folders.

I bought a 1.1.2 version of iphone with a 4.6 bootloader. And then I had it downgraded to 1.1.1 now in general settings it says that it is a version of 1.1.1 bur I dont have any free space that i cant even add any songs to my ipod part. and also I have the simlock program installed but it doesnt work. When I put my sim card in it says something like "you need to use it with a approved simcard"
Do you have any idea about it? Is there anything that i can do for it to work?
