It's already been
available -- and
hacked -- for a a few days now, but iPhone firmware 1.1.2 has finally reached iTunes, the natural home of all things iPhone. We honestly haven't noticed much more new since we started poking around -- the .m4r ringtone hack seems to be
back, and custom ringtones are now broken out in their own list -- but we know you can't resist the siren call of the latest version number. Go on, you'll be fine -- and it's not like getting
back to 1.1.1 is any great feat.

Processor runs a little faster at 412MHz
RyanTV @ Nov 12th 2007 8:30PM
no way I'm flashing mine to 1.1.2 if I'm getting no new features. Weak.
Stan Winstone @ Nov 12th 2007 8:36PM
What is up with these updates with no major new features? They think we are excited about breaking Jailbreak and bricking phones- cmon!
Beau @ Nov 12th 2007 9:56PM
No major new features? Well of course not. When you bump the third # there doesn't necessarily have to be any new features or aesthetic updates, it can purely be bug fixes.
If this is your gripe then wait for 1.2... then 1.3, and so on.
Ray Brevton @ Nov 12th 2007 8:40PM
well, it definitely offers speed and stability enhancements. as in, it crashes way less when surfing the web when listening to music or not.
Marco Rodrigues @ Nov 13th 2007 12:44AM
I agree. I love jail breaking my phone, but 1.1.2 is by far the fastest and most stable version yet. My phone would constantly crash, at least3-4 times a day, requiring a Summerboard restart, which it would be nice enough to do on its own. I even made it a point to install basic appls, Installer.app, BSD Subsystem, tinyproxy and SSHD. The think couldn't even play a song for more than five + minutes without puking.
I'm all for jail breaking, but I can't ignore that fact that Apple's releases are far more refined in their final product. It shows. :P
Maybe things will be different when the SDK is released next year.
Jon @ Nov 12th 2007 8:43PM
I kept my ringtones under itoner. Otherwise don't know what is really new. I'm hoping that my my battery has longer power thou.
ssuk @ Nov 13th 2007 5:41AM
Well, from what I can gather the CPU runs faster... So in reality, battery consumption will probably increase rather than decrease.
Tony @ Nov 12th 2007 8:46PM
If you unlocked your iPhone with iPhoneSimFree (the paid version), and update to 1.1.2 via iTunes, will that re-lock your phone? Thanks in advance.
Matt @ Nov 12th 2007 8:51PM
Can someone please explain "custom ringtones are now broken out in their own list"? What list are they in, where is the list, etc?
Nilay Patel @ Nov 12th 2007 9:21PM
When you look at the ringtone screen in settings, custom ringtones are now listed under "Custom" as opposed to intermingled with the default set.
scolen2 @ Nov 12th 2007 8:54PM
To all of those people who feel that new features are the only reason for updating any software... You go to hell, you go to hell and die! Enjoy your crappy sales driven unstable software.
RyanTV @ Nov 12th 2007 9:03PM
I don't have one problem with stability with 1.1.1 on either of the iPhones in my household.
Leopard Nimrod @ Nov 12th 2007 9:31PM
My 1.1.1. was stable, too; but I just removed my hacks and upgraded to 1.1.2 so I could use my own ringtones within iTunes.
I really didn't like any of the available software offered and the only stability issues I had were from the hacker community. Despite some issues there they have done a bang up job of keeping up with Apple and creating software that many people seem to like.
I welcome the hacks but have little too no use for it. At least right now.
scolen2 @ Nov 13th 2007 2:43AM
this update is great! I can't believe how quick and smooth the UI is now, and I was convinced it was a hardware limitation! :-)
wakanya @ Nov 13th 2007 2:49AM
I don't know about your iPhone, but my safari constantly crashes while I'm listening iPod, and iPod often skips songs or albums from the day 1. Even 1.1.1 didn't fix it.
Hope 1.1.2 really fixes the problem.
Jason @ Nov 12th 2007 11:04PM
The only thing I have noticed since updating is the battery bar in the device list in iTunes.
Alex @ Nov 12th 2007 8:57PM
there's also now a battery status indicator for the iphone in itunes
Bent Cardan @ Nov 12th 2007 9:15PM
they need a Hard Drive accessable feature on the iphone. -Bent Cardan

What's so unusual about this? Weren't the Ten Commandments delivered the same way? I believe there was an iTunes kiosk on Mt. Sinai.
Thou shalt not hack thy iPhone.
Thou shalt not place any iPhone clones before me.
Thou shalt not unlock thy iPhone.
Same old, same old.
Ricochet @ Nov 12th 2007 9:31PM
If you're using your iPhone on a non-visual-voicemail network and haven't been receiving SMS messages notifying you of voicemail arrivals and the likes, then this 1.1.2 update will allow those to come through.
Apparently it fixes the iPhones inability to receive SMS "Flash" messages which are commonly used for one-off messages by networks for voicemail notification, or banks to send you passwords for confirmation of transfers etc.
That fix alone is worth the price of entry for me.
paul34 @ Nov 12th 2007 9:37PM
I'm fairly certain that as with any update, people see "effects" that aren't really a consequence of the version itself.
For example, things such as perceived stability increases, speed increases, "there is less lag," etc often aren't an actual improvement in the newer FW, but usually just a consequence of a clean FW install.
Similar to reformatting and installing a clean copy of XP.
scolen2 @ Nov 13th 2007 3:21AM
I would normally agree with you except that...
1. I just recently nuked my iphone to see if it would help increase UI performance and it didn't
2. The new update fixed all the UI glitches that have been driving me nuts
3. The registry does get bloated in XP, and thats why windows slows down over time.
Now putting a K&N sticker on your car, or some random japanese writing does not increase your HP. In that case, you would be correct, but in this case you are wrong! YOU LOSE, GOOD DAY SIR! ;-)
heavenlysword @ Nov 12th 2007 9:45PM
meh, no multiple delete? you suck Apple! you hear me.. you suck!
Oskin @ Nov 12th 2007 10:08PM
The question is... Does 1.1.2 support a french keyboard and french auto-correction or not? Cuz if it does I'll update it in a heart beat!
wakanya @ Nov 13th 2007 7:48AM
Yes, Sir. 4 new international keyboards are supported from 1.1.2
English (UK)
French
German
Italian
I'm not familiar with French, so not sure if French auto correction is supported or not though.
Oskin @ Nov 13th 2007 12:48PM
Wow thanks... One last thing, if you could try typing the word "aujourd'hui" with the french settings I would really apreciate! I don't want to risk broking my iPhone if there is no auto-correction! Btw, aujourd'hui means today in french... Thanks a lot again!
wakanya @ Nov 13th 2007 3:06PM
I deleted my keyboard dictionary and switched French mode (both keyboard and language). Auto-complete didn't trigger Aujord'hui at any point. Then, I entered some sentences from French wikipedia iPhone page, it did suggest many words before completing it, or correct misspell. It seems suggestions were less frequent than English mode, but I think it's safe to say it's supporting French auto-correction.
Oskin @ Nov 14th 2007 11:47PM
Wow thanks, I'll give it a shot then! Thanks again for your time ;) very apreciated!
Christian Reich @ Nov 12th 2007 10:13PM
I think they added more ringtones unless i just didn't see them before.
Christian Reich @ Nov 12th 2007 10:15PM
There is also some debug thing in the settings for safari.
jodosh @ Nov 12th 2007 10:59PM
I am still waiting for steve to allow custom sms tones. I don't see why they didn't implement that when they launched ringtones through itunes, from a business standpoint they might sell a few more rings, and it wouldn't really take any more coding on their part.
Jason @ Nov 12th 2007 11:05PM
There aren't more ringtones but system and custom ringtones are now seperated. I like this new feature.
Dan Mowchan @ Nov 12th 2007 11:40PM
I was trying to figure out why this took so long to come out in the US iTunes, either way, I already manually updated to 1.1.2 when I heard about it. Also, if you really think this update has no new features (except for bug fixes), don't forget about those of us with an iPod touch. I was really dying for the ability to add calendar items, now I can.
TTrain @ Nov 13th 2007 12:23AM
reading all these comments over the months about salivating for even the most basic features in each upgrade sure makes me so happy I deactivated my iPhone after 7 horrific days. Upside: I switched to AT&T to get the iPhone so now I have my Tilt, and it ROCKS!
JulianDel @ Nov 13th 2007 1:10AM
I can't wait until Apple's contract with AT&T expires.
wslcrew @ Nov 13th 2007 1:49AM
I tried to install 1.1.2 on my unlocked 1.1.1 iPod touch and it's been acting funny ever since. I can't get it to work as it's keep going back to loading message and no control is working. Damn you SJ!
wslcrew @ Nov 13th 2007 2:07AM
It works now... It seems that when upgrading from unlocked 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 on iTunes, it's better to avoid "backup personal settings" option.
wakanya @ Nov 13th 2007 2:31AM
About the international keyboard support.
1.1.1 could activate Japanese keyboard if form language is specified as 'ja'. So, we could use a little hack registering following book mark to activate specific international keyboard;
javascript:document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].setAttribute('lang','ja')
It seems this hack does not work anymore. I was expecting the same language support as iPod touch, but 1.1.2 only supports additional 4 keyboards, and disabled this hack. it's a big disappointment.
Richard @ Nov 13th 2007 5:50AM
YAWN!
ssuk @ Nov 13th 2007 5:56AM
Since you have the name "Heavenlysword" it makes me believe you're unoriginal and just following the mass of anti-apple people. So get the fuck off.
AlanJC @ Nov 13th 2007 6:46AM
Why are people so loathe to update something if it doesn't provide visible functionality?
Surely the fixes should be enough incentive?
apratts @ Nov 15th 2007 1:01AM
I've notice on my iPhone, so far, since the update.
1) Louder and clearer speaker volume
2) Faster loading of email and web pages on both edge and wifi
3) Apple bluetooth battery level indicator shows a more accurate level (before update after about 3 to 4 hours the level would show in the red)
4) Longer iPhone battery life
5) Battery icon in iTunes
6) Ability to but my favorite ringtone on my iPhone and use it
7) Switching between apps seems smoother
There may be more that I will notice later, but these are what I've notice so far.
Antony @ Nov 14th 2007 1:50AM
for the iPod touch the update allows you to add calendar entries on the device, which was previously missing. so the new features were probably more for the touch the the iphone.
