TomTom's ONE XL HD Traffic GPS navigator with "world's most advanced traffic information"

TomTom just lit up its High Definition Traffic, premium traffic service in The Netherlands. Announced in parallel is the ONE XL HD Traffic navigator, for what's a traffic service without a GPS device to take advantage of it? The ONE XL HD Traffic shares the same 4.3-inch LCD of its ONE XL brethren only now with the addition of 1GB of built-in storage and a new SIM card (no activation or configuration required) for live traffic data feeds over Vodafone's GSM network. Traffic information collected anonymously from Dutch Vodafone mobile phones and third party traffic authorities is updated every 3 minutes -- that's 5x the traffic updates and 10x the road coverage of typical traffic systems according to TomTom. Available in TomTom's home country of The Netherlands this month (UK in first half of 2008) for €399 (about $581) including a one year HD Traffic subscription renewable for €9.95/month. An HD Traffic accessory for existing TomTom products will be available in early 2008.

Are you suggesting that Holland has no roads? Or that Dutch people don't drive? Or maybe nobody lives there?
I'm fairly sure that with a population density higher than any other European country (and every US State other than New Jersey) they're a worthy candidate for such a system.

Yes, I know that Holland has roads, and that people drive...
But what does being a densely populated area has to do with people driving??? You mean to tell that EVERYONE has a car and EVERYONE commutes to work everyday? Because I lived in Amsterdam for 9 months, and my impression was that most people rode their bikes daily, or used the excellent public trasportation system, myself included.

I would like this system here in Lisbon, where I live. We're not as densely populated, for sure, but we're freaking CROWDED with cars, especially at rush hour.
(Just to add a little bit of flame... It's pretty known that Portuguese are terrible drivers... But Dutch people?? Jeez, they accelerate on zebras)

I guess you got stuck in Amsterdam alone :-). Nice city, no problem, but the roads (highways) to and from A'dam are pretty crowded each and every day. Twice everyday 300-500 km traffic jam (in the whole country) is normal. Didn't you notice that?

The odd thing is that Japan has had a system like this for at least 4 years (as long as I've had my NAVI head unit in my car). It's called VICS and it works off of the FM radio signals that other cars with VICS send out when they are going slower than normal in an area or when they are stopped when the system says they should be moving. It also displays construction and accidents on your map. It updates just as frequently..... Just my $.02

Im sure that one of the open-source community's has a good idea on how to handle it without a subscriptiopn fee.
But tomtom wants to see more money they are buying tele-atlas :)

That would be great if they would sell the service. I've had a tomtom for a couple months now, and I still have not been able to purchase traffic for my account. Every time I call them they say "Sorry, we're updating the website" .. For more than 2 months? It sounds like their internal applications are horribly broken. Atleast the device works really well on it's own.
