The press release is a bit short on details, but it's hard to miss the meat of the story: the PS3 is set to include DivX playback in the near future. Users will be able to add the feature for everyday media playback with a forthcoming update, and developers can start using DivX playback in their games with the latest version of the Development Kit. With all the rumors of DivX support coming to the 360 -- other Media Center Extenders
already manage DivX and XviD -- it's hard to tell who will add the feature first, but perhaps we should instead be asking ourselves why it took this long for the both of them.
DivX - the choice of pirates.
theCardinal: I'm afraid that RIAA's or anything else washed your brain completely. But don't afraid, there is cure for it. Getting some common sense and knowledge should be the first steps of your therapy.
Anyone who's encoding their own video is not using DivX. The majority of people who are using DivX are getting it from somewhere else.
WOW!!! Finally the day is here for DIVX on the PS3...
I was going to wait until GTAIV / UT3 to get a PS3, but now I will be buying on this weekend... I'm sure PS3 sales will spike a little when the divx update is here
I can think of 4 people who will buy a PS3 because of this
Good news for SONY, very powerful move on their part... Way to steal the thunder from the 360 on this by beating them
So what? The only thing that keeps people using divx is the fact that the "scene" is so stuck in 5 years ago that TV eps come out in this antiquated codec.
Hell, they still have standardization on a file size that is irrelevent to 90% of people, so what, you can put 2 episodes of csi on one *CD*, you could put 3 on at the same quality in h264, and who burns to cds these days anyway?
Im sorry, if it launched with only divx and was now getting h264, that would be news, this is like calling adding AM radio to a zune a wonderful new feature.
why are you people complaining about sony adding formats to play... i dont understand even if it were an 8 track player they were gonna release why complain when its just another choice you have in media playback...?
