Leopard 10.5.1 is now available
Leopard bugs got you down? Apple just pushed out its first update for the new OS, 10.5.1. It looks like it cures a whole laundry list of niggles with Leopard, including that nasty "potential data loss" issue with partitions in Finder. We heard about most of these fixes last week when the first build was seeded to developers, but there's a rundown of what actually made it after the break. Highlights include a fix to Time Machine drive limitations, a bunch of improvements to Finder's Shared Sidebar, and good old fashioned spanking of Mail.app's issues. Let us know if Apple didn't fix what ails you and we'll be sure to have our people talk to Steve's people.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
AirPort
- Allows password-protected accounts on AirPort Disks to show up on in the Finder's Shared Sidebar.
- Resolves an issue with saved passwords for wireless networks.
Back to My Mac
- Improves the reliability of Back to My Mac-enabled Macs appearing in the Finder's Shared Sidebar.
- Improves compatibility with D-Link NAT gateways.
Disk utilities
- Restores the functionality of the progress bar during permission repairs in Disk Utility.
- Addresses an issue that could produce an alert when creating disk images using Disk Utility or Terminal.
- Improves disk partitioning when multiple RAID sets are created on the same disk.
iCal
- iCal alarms are now more reliably delivered via email.
- Resolves an issue when inviting attendees via a CalDAV account.
- Improves stability when resizing columns in the message viewer or switching between Stationery templates in email messages.
- Addresses an issue in which attachments enclosed inside an HTML link may not be clickable in email messages.
- Fixes an issue with email accounts added using the "Simple Setup" feature in which messages cannot be sent due to an SMTP connection failure.
- Improves Smart Mailboxes compatibility with .Mac Sync, and addresses an issue with To Do's disappearing when using Smart Mailboxes.
- Resolves an issue with syncing Mail accounts with .Mac in which multiple On My Mac folders appear in the Mailbox pane.
Networking
- Addresses an issue in which Microsoft Windows shared folders may be read-only when connected via SMB.
Printing
- Resolves an issue in which user-selected values on Paper Feed PDE are reset to default while saving a custom preset.
Security, Firewall
- Addresses a code signing issue; third-party applications can now run when included in the Application Firewall or when whitelisted in Parental Controls.
- In Security preferences' Firewall tab, the "Block All" option is now called "Allow Only essential services"

- Resolves an issue with login after turning off FileVault for a specific user account.
- Improves compatibility with Adobe Flash-based uploaders used by .Mac Web Gallery and certain other websites and applications.
- Resolves a potential text drawing issue with certain Adobe Flash-based websites and applications.
Time Machine
- Addresses formatting issues with certain drives used with Time Machine (specifically, single-partition MBR drives greater than 512 GB in size as well as NTFS drives of any size and partition scheme).
- Resolves an issue in which files restored in Time Machine may be restored to the backup hierarchy rather than the folders to which they belong.

be still my beating heart.
The best just got a whole lot better. Is that even possible? Of course, it's an Apple product. Wow! It's like adding a cherry on top of whipped cream.
Another Leopard upgrade, another nail in Vista's coffin.
I didnt see an listing for iTunes and on the apple discussion boards there have been some iTunes problems, my machine included. I haven't gotten to check out 10.5.1 yet,but i hope it fixes my iTunes from freezing up every 4 minutes.
"Another Leopard upgrade, another nail in Vista's coffin."
Did I miss something or was "Leopard now seamlessly supports all third party hardware" listed in the patch notes? I can't wait to find Leopard drivers for my Turtle Beach sound card and GeForce8800 GTX. Oh and RAID drivers too!
Wake up, champ. Leopard and Vista are competitors in only one, very small place: on the machine that can actually run both operating systems. The Mac.
As soon as I find a way to fit a Turtle Beach sound card and GeForce8800 GTX into my laptop, I'll let you know.
Love,
Champ
... Wow, that was a good come back! I mean, you completely missed the point he was making. There's no SOFTWARE support for his soundcard and graphics card in Mac OSX, not that the hardware is a problem. There is easily a way to put his cards into a mac pro, but there's no support in OSX for them... Where as in a normal PC desktop running Vista, there is. So good job there.
Hmmmm...surely something from Apple isn't having problems. Just further proof that the Engadget people are Microsoft Zealots. I, for one, demand an investigation.
Who notified the religious right of this website? The comments section has been a mess recently -- so many fails.

will it fix the major flaw in Stacks (that is, their existence)?
It would be nice if you could turn stacks off and go back to the old way.
Isn't supposed to be this the infallible OS made by God with no problems at all ?
@acidscan
No, it isn't
somebody's been living in the RDF for far too long.
time to step out and smell...reality? or fresh air, oh wait, christ you need a shower, damn!
go back inside!
You've GOT to be kidding me. OS X isn't perfect--just forgivable.
Firstly,"Isn't supposed to be this the infallible OS"???
ROFL
Someone,I'm assuming a windows user,sounds bitter.
Made by God?
No,im pretty sure its made by apple.Big difference.
You foolish fool you.
Always refreshing to see Mac-haters acting just as smug and snotty as Mac fans:p
Methinks someone reeks of sour grapes.
10.5.1 up and running. Happy so far -- so far it's even more infallible.
Every once in a while (a couple of eons or so) even God changes the rules of perfection. He didn't bother with fixing Vista because it would take too much time for even Him.
I'm hoping they fixed the USB power issue.
It affects both my iMac and Macbook Pro.
To sum up the problem: it doesn't send a constant flow of energy to USB devices and it's primarily an issue with hard drives and USB hubs (I made sure it wasn't the hub and hard drive that were broken, they work fine in Tiger machines, in Windows and Linux), causing them to disconnect frequently (to a point where I can't even access my important files at school :S) and can even cause hubs to short (read Apple's support forum).
If it hasn't, I guess I'll have to do something about it because it's crippling me.
LAMO!! God wouldn't have needed that 7th day of rest had it not been for Microsoft.
Yet, there is one OS more infallible than OS X and it's name is Gutsy.
niggles? wtf?
must be the new slang all the cool kids are using these days
(to) niggle - intransitive verb
1 a: trifle b: to spend too much effort on minor details
It's a word I've heard my parents and grandparents use since I was a child, so it's not that hip and happening.
it's a word that people stopped using because it sounds too much like a word that should never be used.
What's up my niggle!
For gods sake its only english! Damn american english! Damn you to hell!
Niggle what?
Niggle please
Fo Shiggle my niggle! Im in da higgle!
NIGGLE STOLE MY BIKE! D=
Hip Hip Hooorayyyyyyyyy, time to fix a herd of issues on my Imac.
Does this fix the Spaces issue with Windows disappearing?
looks like they fixed the dataloss issue when copying files...
It still did npt fix the p buttpn pn my keybpard. This keybpard tptally pwns me!
"Addresses an issue in which Microsoft Windows shared folders may be read-only when connected via SMB."
Bah! I've been messing with the permissions on my file server for weeks now thinking that it was Windows causing that problem.
Ironic, no? Maybe the DOJ needs to get involved and file an antitrust motion against AAPL.
I haven't applied the patch yet. I hope "Spaces" doesn't hang the finder & other applications anymore. I had to relaunch the finder every time I use the spaces.
Also, does anyone know how to bring back my disappeared hard disk/icon? The poor icon replacement application didn't work as intended.I can access the files in the finder though. But wondering if anyway to bring it back? (Didn't turn on the TimeMachine until a week after this happened)
hey, did you do an "upgrade," "clean install" or "archive and install?"
I did an "upgrade" on one machine and that's the one having trouble with spaces (and time machine, for that matter).
Did the "Archive & Install" at first (didn't try the upgrade due to widespread bluescreen issues). Then recently did the "Clean Install" to cleanup the clutter.
Spaces is a great feature but not well-implemented/tested.
Stacks - hm..Apple must have taken a day off during the design and testing phase.
@shishyan
if you're talking about your desktop icon, right click on the desktop and go to view options. Leopard lets you decide what to show and hide on the desktop, which is nice when I have 50 billion mounted network disks.
@John
That actually works only if everything seems to run normal. My icon replacement tweak spoil that. I can't even find my OS X drive in the finder. (But I can access the sub folders from Documents/Applications/etc).
I remember trying a workaround (from some blog/site). But didn't work that well for me.
Ever seen disappearing windows caused by Spaces? It's really weird, happens about once a day for me. Have to restart the app to get the window to show again. Show/Hide through the dock doesn't work...
ok, i'm not a microsoft fan boy or anything, i'll buy anything as long as it works, i just want to say that I'm upset that microsoft hasn't released it's update yet. True, they do have constant updates, but vista is still givin me probs.
they release updates once a month. check your update history, there will be hundreds of them. apple just labels them.
You can feel the love.
Safari is much more Snappier
I hope that's true. Since th eupgrade, Safari 3 has been slow. I'll find out tonight!
This'll shut up those Zune fanbois.
That'll take care of them alright, but how about something that will shut YOU up?
Ziiiing!
Good one Joe. I'll bet you've been holding on to that one for a couple of weeks now waiting for just the right moment.
Boy you really told me, and showed everyone your implacable lack of understanding of ironic humor. Now put your Zunephones back on and crank back up the Kenny G. Mmmmm, that's the stuff.
This one's off the top of my head for you; shut up. I chuckled at your first reply, laughed at his reply, however your cry-baby come back wasn't at all ammusing, thus, you're a moron. Get off the internet.
Dude,
Do you speak English? I mean, you know, professionally? Because your post didn't make sense, and I think spell check must be broken on your Vista machine. Maybe SP1 will fix that.
Now, in response to your accusations; yes, both my initial post, and my reply were highly amusing. (Yes, that's how you spell amusing- check it out!) Perhaps your sense of humor BSOD'd at some point.
Joe's reply to my initial non-sequitur (go look it up, I'll wait...) was an unwarranted personal attack. That is unacceptable, and hence my reply. Your reply was both grammatically and structurally unsound, leaving me to believe you are either stupid, or immature, or a combination of the two. As the Internet is a bastion of free expression, I will not stoop to your level of either incompetent retort or juvenile name-calling. You are free to your opinion and I am free to revel in the knowledge that I am smarter than you.
Go in peace
Just get Ubuntu instead.
Ubuntu is a lame excuse for Linux. Looks
to much like windows. Try fedora or red
hat.
I don't know what you mean. Fedora look exactly like Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Xubuntu for the fact that they both use kde/gnome/xfce so your point is moot.
Umm..I'm sorry but name a Linux distro that doesn't use KDE/Xfce/gnome.
Whoo, time to update my "Hac Pro". Let's
see if cs3 will run any smoother now.
My Mail.app crashes like crazy now WTH did they do....
Reinstall 10.5.1 from Apple's website (link above).
If that doesn't work then download Pacifist to install Mail from your system discs.
why the shite do i still have to plug cable into my computer to use front row audio? airtunes dammit!! fix this or ill make sure you never see another turtleneck again!
Time Machine backup to an AirPort Disk was a rumored last minute Leopard cut, for fix in 10.5.1, but it doesn't seem to be here on the list. Can anyone confirm?
it maybe that i just woke up and am reading this, but did they get this out extremely fast? or am i just totally out of it
What about the BSOD icon ?
What about it? Do you think it needs changing? Do not see it as somewhat funny?
Hope it stays.
This seems to have resolved my Keychain and .Mac issues.
I still have a bug when opening map/directory view from the finder dock icon. it instantly locks the finder and i have to kill it to get it function again. This bug doesnt' work when a finder window is open..
There is still also a bug when i was using 802.1X WEP encryption at college earlier today. when booting leopard it searches for new or known wireless networks and gives me a password dialog. Since I authenticate against a LDAP server (U/P settings stored in the 802.1X tab) ) and also have a certificate, this dialog box is wrong. If i enter my password it also doesn't work!
When canceling the dialog box and going to the wireless menu in the top right screen and selecting my access point, i get connected right away!! :-)
Come on apple, you can do better then that!
Also, please remove or upgrade the "address book" in the terminal application, its still a shame...
Regards,
Rick
I hope this fixes bizarre bugs with Firefox. Those bugs:
- Randomly, some drop-down menus (as in the HTML SELECT tag) do not function. I click on them, but the drop-down doesn't appear, forcing the use of cursor keys to change the selected option. I can replicate this every time on Vox.com, less frequently on other sites.
- Sometimes, AJAX-heavy sites - specifically Gmail and similar services - either load really slowly or not at all.
- Sometimes, Firefox will crash for no apparent reason while opening a site from my bookmarks. It will continue to crash if I restore the session, but will be fine if I start a new session. I haven't noticed a pattern to the sites I'm trying to open.
I've only started seeing these since OS X 10.5 and Firefox 2.0.0.8.
Mail.app also crashes for me sometimes, and M-Audio haven't released Leopard drivers yet (but then, they've only had access to developer builds for what - two years? Lazy bastards). Other than these issues, my system boots and runs faster and I have no other problems.
I'm pretty sure that both Macs and PCs are fine for leaving pointless bitchy comments on blog posts, so why not discuss the actual topic at hand?
Things still not working:
iSub doesn't work!
Some SMB shares mount but still appear empty!
Will it fix that bizarre issue where it makes my 15" MacBook Pro (less than a month old) run extremely slowly upon waking up from sleep?
I'm hoping for a fix to allow time machine to perform incremental backups with FileVault turned on for my home directory. If I have to choose between security and redundancy for a laptop that travels around a lot, I'll take security.
Until then, here's to nightly rsyncx to an encrypted disk image.
Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with 10.5.
this might have been answered already but does this update fix time machine on networked drive via airport extreme?
This has to be said.
I wish microsoft could be a prompt as apple in getting updates out. Windows Explorer still crashes all the time in vista, drives me fuckin' insane!!!!
How long has vista been out now? Where's my SP1?
In beta...
*cough* I believe there is a .cmd file you can run to make the SP1 beta show up in Windows update *cough*
I hope you aren't comparing this to a service pack, nor, I hope, are you expecting XP like feature upgrades out of a Vista service pack. MS has released several pretty substantial patches over the past year to address various performance and reliability issues, much in line with this Leopard patch. The service pack is supposed to be mostly just a cummulative mega patch, so if you have been keeping up to date every second tuesday (like you should), the service pack isn't going to be a big deal for you.
I hate people who come into an update based around a specific OS just to throw in a "Just get Ubuntu" comment. Ubuntu is not the be all end all linux distro you linux scene kid. Go grab a Gentoo ISO and build everything from source and we'll see how well you fair, dammit.
The thing is, Ubuntu is the only distro that's truly going mainstream, unlike Gentoo and all those pain-in-the-ass-for-coders-and-communists-only distros you people are using.
7.10 is awesome, but I think 8.0 will be the true breakthrough.
Immediately purchases "codersandcommunists.com"
Tell me that isn't the best name ever for a Linux news site or something (tongue in cheek, of course).
hmm...
1. Back to My Mac still broke (NAT firewall on DD-WRT router)
2. Safari still not reading websites correctly (example, google reader buttons don't show up)... still an issue.
3. Now I can't see *any* PCs in my network under the Finder: "Shared"
grr.
Spotlight does not give priority to results from my home folder, still. If I search for Documents, the first result is always some random script buried deep within the Library folder. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!?
I thought Leopard was a new version... like if OSX was 10.0 then Leopard was going to be 11.0. I'm not an Apple guy anymore so I was just basing this off of ads and the hype around the Leopard release. I didn't realise OSX users needed a service pack so badly.

Hmmm. I wish SP1 would hurry up!
What about the issues with Aperture and Time Machine leading to corruption of Aperture's database?
Hmmm no Front Row updates. Darn... Was hoping to be able to connect to AirTunes again.
After all the news over Leopard's 'broken' firewall, guess it was expected that Apple would fix it. Now what's easier ... to fix the problem, or rename it to better describe what it is actually doing ... Hmmm
In Security preferences' Firewall tab, the "Block All" option is now called "Allow Only essential services"
does any one know of a really good tutorial to get mac working on pc?
i have been all over the net and cant seem to get a nice tutorial that goes thru everything and shows me how to load mac on pc...
thanks
Every time I exit a program my screen turns upside down for a split second. I have a power PC mac min. What's the deal?
Not sure if anyone has come across this issue but in Tiger you were able to organize windows and the desktop icons by name, date created, date modified, etc. Now, not only are you limited by how you organize them, you have to organize them separately in each different window instead of choosing all windows. Anyone having the same problem?
still havnt fixed the, surely accidental, removal of proper international keyboard support, where different windows can have different keyboards, since upgrading to leapord i have to manualy select the input method everytime i switch from coding to adium and back...
P-W-N-A-G-E
reflections in iphoto are still upside down on intel macs... I'm not sure if it's an iphoto or OS X thing, but it seems like this should have been fixed in the update along with the other iphoto fixes.
If your update hangs and does not restart, or you keep getting the setup assistant every time you restart, here is the fix. (It appears to happen if you install an iLife update an 10.5.1 at the same time, so install 10.5.1 by itself).
So here are the STEPS if you get caught in the Leopard Setup Assistant Loop Bug ---
1) Boot into Safe Mode by holding down the shift key upon boot... (wait, wait, wait... it will finally come up)
2) DO NOT LOG IN
3) Hit the back arrow key
4) Then hit the restart button
5) Wait, it will then run/rerun the updates
6) Wait, wait, wait and it will finally restart...
Then you are back to normal without any data loss...

No :(
The 10.5.1 install hosed my installation. Can't even boot from the volume anymore. Be warned.
Why does safari on 10.5 and 10.5.1 ask me for my password for my company's secure intranet site about a bazillion times and only work occasionally? Is this a keychain issue? Can they fix whatever it is? I "fixed" it by downloading firefox to use instead of safari, but I shouldn't have to...
