A few of our readers were scoffing at the idea of a $399 40GB PS3. "What's the big deal," you said. This: according to Sony's CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, they've more than doubled sales in the US in the weeks since its launch. "It's the breakthrough we've been waiting for," said Stringer, "We've been holding our breath. Finally, the turning point has been passed." Prior to the
October 18th price cut, Sony was selling just 30k to 40k consoles per week. Sales rose to 75,000 in the week ending October 29 rising to 100,000 the following week. Stringer also credits
Wii shortages for helping the boost. Andrew House, Sony's chief marketing officer even takes a jab at HD DVD saying, "It puts us vastly ahead of where the other format is going to be in terms of an installed base in people's homes by the end of this holiday season." Perhaps, but we don't expect the boys at Microsoft, Nintendo, and Toshiba to just roll over and let this progress continue unabated now, do we?
You want this(PS3), don't you? The hate is
swelling in you now. Take your 360.
Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it.
Give in to your anger. With each passing
moment, you make yourself more my servant.
lol, this sound a LOT a S&M stuff.
@FrankTheCrank
That is awesome...LOL. I can't stop laughing. I think the PS3 is finally hitting at home with games people will actually admit to playing to. Now I don't own a wii but I own both ps3 and 360, if I could find one here where I live I'm sure I'd pick one up.
Well, the price drop is what made me consider getting one so I can have all three consoles, plus there is games on the system that I want like Ratchet and Clank, Resistance (despite its a launch game), Uncharted, MGS4, and whatnot. The system has been getting good games (like R&C, Uncharted and Fokelore all got ratings in the 9s on IGN) and it has some good features, as well as BluRay playback (now in comparison, it IS cheaper to get a PS3 with BluRay than getting an Xbox 360 with an HD-DVD drive and BluRay is winning ATM, though I just want the format war to end).
Also, I agree with some that the Wii is in a very different demographic than the other two, which is what makes it so unique and one of the reasons I like it quite abit. Plus who can deny the top-notch Nintendo exclusives. But personally, I don't understand the shortages myself since I wouldn't imagine the Wii being as hard to produce as a PS3 or Xbox 360, so I would think it would be in a BIGGER supply, not a smaller one.
Blu-Ray is not "winning ATM" unless you mean Ass-To-Mouth (which you never do btw) because right now, its a stalemate... and it was admitted by the Sony execs that it was a stalemate... And i dont know what price drop youre excited about... The 360 premium is 349 and it comes with two games in the box... Still cheaper than the watered down 40 gig that does not do BC games, lost 2 USB ports, and I have comments on the Blu-Ray compatibility, but it'll start a flame war, so i'll just direct my comments at the PS3...
I guess so, but as I said, I just want the format war to end. Its personally just a giant headache and makes it a pain to get movies in HD, especially if a certain movie you want is only on HD-DVD while the other is only on BluRay.
Also, I know, I own all three consoles as I said, and the PS3 is a good platform, so is the Xbox 360 and so is the Wii. I think all of them are excellent platforms and all have their strenghs, as well as weaknesses. Also, not having BC stinks abit but I don't mind that too much. Heck, I never use the backwards compatibility on my Xbox 360 though the new Xbox games download feature does look interesting though.
AndyG, you need to get your facts straight...
Bluray is winning the format war. 61% market share since inception. Year to date, 64%. And 71% for the week ending 11/4.07.
I would say BLURAY is INDEED WINNING.
Read this:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/11/09/nielsen-videoscan-high-def-market-share-for-week-ending-november/
@ Frank
If you read the article you would also realize that the HD-DVD player sale over weekend didnt impact those numbers yet. Saying BR is winning is far from the truth if you look at most BR/HD DVD sales over the last 4 months; BR goes down month by month where HD continues to grow, so yes; it is a stalemate right now.
If you’ve taken economics you wouldn’t really consider this genius by any means since they are not doing any followup to take advantage of it. Either razing price (in terms of console releasing bundled ver ex 2 controllers and some game) or adjusting to at least meet the demand for the holidays. I would argue its a good move throughout the year but to not meet the demand in holiday season is pure stupidity. If a parent is only buying 1 console and the wii is what they wanted to get but couldn’t, they will buy something for the holidays and it wont be the wii.
I sold my XBOX 360 for $300, and bought a PS3 for $399. Overall, I'm happy with my decision.
sucks to be you... hope you are lying... XBL is so much more established than any type of connectivity the PS3 has... and im not talking fold@home...
1. Demos, they have to download and install before playing... On the 360, download and play on the spot. no install time
2. XBLA has 3 times as many choices and options
3. Finding a friend online is much easier on the 360 than on the PS3
4. Matchmaking is much easier, and its easier to tag someone you met in a room
5. the PS3 menu system is kind of weak and convoluded...
6. The 360's controller is so much more comfortable than the PS
I mean, if you wanted a blu-ray player, i understand, but WHY get rid of your 360...
Well, I don't understand why you would get rid of your Xbox 360 instead of just keeping both platforms. The only reason I would if he's gotten the RROD (what I call the 360's "Great plague") ALLOT but still, the Xbox 360 is a good platform.
1. Yea, that is one minor annoyance on the PS3. I am guessing the PS3 downloads the files like a ZIP and has to extract them, thus the "installing". The Xbox 360's demos are just one self-contained file that the demos run entirely from.
2. I agree there, XBLA has FAR, FAR more games than PSNs downloadable games right now.
3. True for the moment, though I heard "Home" might change that. But still, Xbox Live is far better and currently the best console online service going.
4. True as well, but the only thing that bothers me is XBL's lack of dedicated servers, which can hurt lag times in some games (like the issues with Team Fortress 2).
5. Not true at all, the XMB is a good interface, though I do like the 360's abit better.
6. The PS controller is comfortable but the Xbox 360 controller does feel better and more comfortable. Only downer - the D-Pad.
To address your points above...
1. Frankly, I really don't care about demo download times...
2. Agreed. I play NHL08 online and I'm not blown away with the results...
3. Don't know, haven't tried... You may be right... Sony obviously needs to work on their online offering...
4. In all probability I will never need to use 'Matchmaking'...
5. Disagree. I find the PS3 menu system much more sophisticated than that of the XBOX 360...
6. Agreed. I don't like the way the PS3 controller feels in my hands (maybe if I had small hands)... I also don't like the way the two analogs are rounded convexly... Lastly, I'm annoyed that the controller is Bluetooth, as I cannot program my all-in-one remote (which uses infrared or UHF) to control my PS3...
Now, let's go the other way...
1. XBOX Live is the equivalent of taxation...
2. Included BluRay player must be seen to be appreciated... Looks amazing on my 46" Samsung LCD...
3. Aesthetically, the XBOX 360 looks like a toy - as does it's matching controller...
4. The XBOX 360 sounds like I'm running a large air conditioner in my living room... That's a HUGE one for me - I was really bothered by the contant noise of the 360
lololol @ fanboys
Chiefsoap,
Great name. And no, not a fanboy at all. Just appreciate good technology.
Unfortunately, selling "double" is based on the numbers they were previously selling, which were horrible. So really all they did was move themselves into a "closer last" place for gaming consoles. Sure, great for Blu-Ray, etc.
The big question is will the increased sales be sustained, or are we only seeing a bubble due to the price drop? When the previous models were discontinued/discounted, they "doubled" their sales as well, but they didn't stay doubled. Unless they can actually follow through with a steady stream of worthwhile (and especially exclusive) games, they're still going to be an also-ran.
I think TKWarrior's reply says all that we need to know about him: great bringer of proof (sic) and strawmen. Thanks for saving me more typing time. Now finish your homework before Mom gets mad.
Classy, very classy.
It's very easy to call someone else childish and a fanboy out of one side of your mouth, while acting the very same and worse in your own posts. Sorry I couldn’t entertain you more, but daddy had to go to work this morning. I hope you weren't refreshing the page too long before feeling better about yourself.
Fortunately, others here have already defended my points for me and proven that reading is indeed fundamental. And judging by the comment rankings many agree.
This is a comments section on a tech blog, after all. Please grow up and read facts and comments for what they are. I can’t help you if you are seeing some hidden emotions or agendas that simply aren’t there.
While acting the same? Show me where I've set up strawmen and/or puts words into others' posts and/or argued with someone by twisting their points and I'll let that stand. You say you deal with facts: prove it.
AGAIN, I didn't say your points were wrong, I said they were not relevant to the posts you were arguing with. Very simple. You're a flamebating, fanboy moron - and others here have agreed with that too if you'd bothered reading all the posts, so stop acting like everyone thinks you are right.
Child.
ROFL - Wow, just wow.
A reader of the site for a loong time, and it finally took someone
like Jay for me to sign up. You should feel proud of yourself, buddy!
Now I have to maintain accounts on here and Giz (don't hate, I'm love
all the interwebs).
Not like anyone will actually see this (the article is burried by now
and nobody cared to begin with) so this is a message between me and
you Jay: Grow up.
TK didn't need to reply to your dumb s!it and you didn't have to
respond, either. But after reading all the comments, I can see he (I'm
assuming with the daddy remark) at least made some un-biased remarks
based on fact, while you seem to be trying to argue with speculation
and here-say on anything not pro-sony. I don't see where he put words
in your mouth (I'll read again), but its not like you were painting a
positive picture of yourself with your childish remarks.
Speaking of PS3 (that is what the article is about after all) I can
see with TKs post history he's actually looking forward to Time Crisis
4, as am I. Guncon3 FTW! Doesn't seem like a wii fanboy to me.
However, you sir, have ALLOT of posts on www.ps3fanboy.com.
Interesting.....
So before you respond in 5 minutes to call me a child too, let me get
a chance to act the part. I'll call a spade a spade and say STFU
troll.
Looking forward to your insightfull words in the future.
(And TK, please don't respond anymore. I'm not exactly defending you
here but lowering yourself to his/her kind doesn't paint a better
picture for yourself, either. Just stop while you're ahead next time
or nobody will take you seriously, okay?)
^^ Sockpuppet much? A much too much.
By the way TK, if you can't take it don't dish it out so readily. Just look at the way you originally replied to "w" at the start of this thread then claim you still have the moral high ground. Oh dear, another one of your "facts" that proves my point.
And for the last time, replying with facts is all well and good as long as the facts relate to the post you are disagreeing with. Some guy claims Wii hype is ending and you go ballistic saying it's sold x millions in the past. So what? He didn't say it HAD no hype and HAD sold little. He commented on the future. And that demonstrates your problem.
"LOL. Go back to your bridge and stop flame-baiting." (Copyright TKWarrior)
I was ready to buy a PS3 finally after the price drop, until I found out they were removing the BC. I have so many PS2 games and there aren't that many yet for PS3 I want.
I'll pass for now.
A lot of these bigger sales in some countries are people grabbing the BC 60GB before it disappears. Mainly because there has been no word on replacement BC version to sit next to the 40GB.
Xmas period is crucial for Sony; once the 60GB is gone they need to keep the figures up with the 40........
Why would one buy the 60 GB unit for 500 dollars, while there is an 80 GB unit for the same price and BC... I really don't know, unless people are actually not running to buy the 60 GB version like many of you speculate here. I think the higher PS3 demand is simply due to three factors; price cut to 400 dollars( which is in my opinion contributed to most of those sames numbers), better games and simply its the holiday season, sales soar for everything on holidays...
As of the Wii losing customers due to limited supplies, I doubt that, since wii customers are not really gamers(I mean like ps3/360 gamers). There are more casual and I believe if there was no wii at all (hypothatically) they would not buy a gaming console in the first place..
The 80 gigger does BC via software. The 60 gigger has PS2 chips in it.
So that's news, but somehow Engadget never touched this story?
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/xbox-360-outsells-ps3-in-japan/
Some of you may want to rethink your comments about people buying up the 60g units because I think the reference is that the 40s are what is selling. Personally I'm upgrading from the original X-Box to the PS3 40g. I bought the X-box as a DVD player that would play games and now I'm buying the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player that plays games. I support Blu-Ray because of the greater bandwidth, which should better support lossless audio with good video. I don't care about PS2 compatability since I have none of those games. I like the lower power & heat of the 40g so I can run folding@home. At this point I think the PS3 is the most future proof Blu-Ray player, except of course the expensive dual format players. Sony will keep pushing updates to this platform long after any stand-alone player released this season. By the way, forget about a winner in the "format war". If multiple game platforms can survive, so can multiple movie formats, however unfortunate that is. I expect to watch any HD DVD flicks via download or on-demand. If the 40g HDD is to small I can always upgrade. I just wish Logitech would release a Harmony remote with Bluetooth.
The real question is, can they keep pace with 75k unis? at every price drop there is going to be influx of new buyers, I think they need more high quality games before sony can really smile, right now they're just taking a big hit on the console and no income coming in from games.
Gran Turismo 5 is the only reason I'd get a PS3. Backwards compatibility is a glitchy joke. A $200 PS3 with no blueray hddvd crap would be great. Why does a console have to take over my entertainment center. Maybe I just want to watch TV and play video games once in a while. What's wrong with that?
This is just preemptive PR to soft'n the blow from todays NPD numbers.
I'll buy a PS3 when it comes out with Socom, Home, and a vibrating controller. My wife won't buy me one until the controller has the vibrate function for some reason.
Well you can debate all you want, but I got my 40GB PS3 on Friday, and love it. I had been waiting to get into both the next-gen game system and the high-def video market, and now I'm in both and have bought several Blu-ray movies.
This system is what I've been waiting for. It has no cons for me at all--I'm not a "sucker" and I researched this well. I"m no fanboy, but Sony knows what they're doing.
So far I'm LOVING my PS3. Call of Duty 4 is recockulous, Rachet is uber fun, and I've played the Uncharted demo about 10 times so I know that is gonna rock.
Come on people, stop goofing off and get to work.....your boss is going to find out your fighting over bull shit that does not matter on the your company computer and your comapy bandwidth. Flaming takes a lot of bandwidth you know. Be nice will ya. These are game consoles people, meant for fun. I think owning all 3 is a the best way...if you can afford, because they all are really cool machines and have their palce in the silicon world.
So chill and use this energy to raise the money to buy them all. A'right.
Things are slowly starting to look up for PS3. The Divx news is great too. let's hope the momentum carries over until the big exclusives hit next year.
Don't believe Sony's hype on this one.
Wow, Sony sold 175,000 PS3s over two weeks based on the release of a new version. This means that stores around the world put in more orders for the 40GB model in order to have it in stock. That does not relate to consumer's purchasing the 40GB model. I will wait to see the Japanese weekly and NPD numbers before I believe anything coming out of Sony's camp.
Personally, I am still waiting for the $300 price point to pick me up a PS3. $400 is still too high.
hahahaha, and I am sure that comment will be over the heads of most people here.
NERDS!!!!....oh, wait!

For some reason, Engadget won't let me reply there.....?
BTW you dinosaurs that can't handle bluetooth remotes should be aware that that at least one company makes usb IR adapter dongles.
Find me online playing Warhawk AKA Onigauss
Im picking mine up today.
I found a store w/ 60GB's in stock!
I just got my new 40 gig PS3 and my 42" Panasonic Plasma 1080p rig setup and operational. It was a
snap configuring the PS3 for my WEP wifi router, updated the firmware to 2.0 and I'm good to go.
The 40 gig model with the new 65 mil die is cool and totally silent.
I'm very happy with this TV/Console pair...my only wish would be to have the ability to add a bunch
more RAM...and the Blue Ray Drive is fanatasic.

Translation: Sony is now losing twice as much money as it was a few months ago. Excellent.
Wii is a fantastic console from view of innovative controller, it may be underspecced to the 360 and PS3 but the install base will ensure that developers will write better code and intuitive games for it eventually just like the PS2.
PS3 combines similar motion sensing technology and blazing performance , i hope to see the motion controller technology on both consoles compete for the same casual gamer market to produce better more intuitive to play motion games. I.e wii Bowling and PS3 high velocity bowling.
At the same time the PS3 competes with the X360 for physics and amazing graphics.
This competition means the PS3 games will have a higher bar than other consoles.
I hope to see the resultant games comming up will be fun to play have stunning graphics and realistic physics. Think gamers are going to see some fantastic stuff on PS3 the current batch of titles is the tip of the iceberg. The console will sell like a rolling stone, the more sales the more developers can spend and the better the games and PS3 has huge scope.
Funny how Sony have managed to make 20 MILLION PS2's a year....
Of course, the Wii is so advanced and hi-tech it is harder and takes much longer to make.....oh no, hang on a minu

Dude you really should read full interviews before you run off at the mouth. In the interview he states that Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by more than 2 to 1, which is a fact. Blu-Ray players also have a much larger install base, FACT. The stalemate comment which was twisted by 360 fanboy sites was commenting on the fact that there will still be two formats as they won't be able to completely kill it off because of the Paramount deal. It is a FACT that Blu-ray is currently kicking HD-DVD's a**, and I own both formats.
As far as the 360-PS3 comments you made; Again, I own both formats but you just aren't thinking straight. Let's look at the price of the 60/80 GB versus 20 GB 360: PS3 60/80GB is $499 and comes with a game or w/the 60 you can choose between 2 games or an extra controller. 360 20 GB $349. The 360 was touted as the "Ultimate wireless format" yet doesn't have Wi-Fi. I don't think everyone wants their router right by their entertainment system. That means you pay $100 for the adapter. Which makes the price you pay $449. If you want that extra controller or game it's $50 more which brings us to the same price of $499. Oh and you still have to pay for a year of Xbox Live you want online gaming which is $50. That's $540 to get the same thing you have with a $499 PS3. Oh, hold on, not exactly. You still won't have an HD format movie player which you get with the PS3. To get that you'll have to spend $170. That would be $710 to get what the PS3 offers and still have 1/3 of the HD space.
I love both systems but this 360 fanboy bs about getting more value and being cheaper is completely off the mark.
