We suppose this is exactly what happened the first time Ive fired up Photoshop to mock up the third-gen
iPod nano -- or what happens when
KIRFers spend a little too much time watching pandas at the zoo. Plays the usual goofy MTV format on its 2.4-inch screen, as well as MP3 and WMA, but honestly, you wouldn't be caught dead with this thing, would you?

Truth Hurts @ Nov 20th 2007 3:18PM
Geez, yet another "STUPID CHINESE UNDESIRABLES/CRAP"...
Here's what's happening in China: 1) Japanese and Korean gadget, phone and car makers release sleek, innovative new devices or vehicles domestically in Japan and Korea; 2) Chinese rip-off companies buy one, and return to China where the whole thing is copied; 3) The Chinese companies sell the fake version domestically in China; 4) when the original is finally sold in China, Chinese consumers think the original is a counterfeit of a Chinese original, since the Chinese phone was sold first, and are OUTRAGED at the copyright violation. Counterfeiters cost legit companies about $600 billion per year and growing fast, and the overwhelming majority of it happens in China.

id get it
for someone else LOL
Ellianth @ Nov 20th 2007 12:54PM
I don't see the resemblance to the ipod nano.
striggity @ Nov 20th 2007 2:30PM
you serious? like...really? lol.
Ellianth @ Nov 20th 2007 6:02PM
Yes, i'm serious! Don't get me wrong, that player is ugly as sin. But just because apple made an ugly ipod doesn't mean they have a patent on ugly. The fatty and that player look very different to me.
Will @ Nov 20th 2007 12:44PM
I wouldn't be caught dead with the thing it's knocking off, let alone this thing.
BrianB @ Nov 20th 2007 12:35PM
Thin enough to put in my wallet, I'd definitely have one.
farfisa @ Nov 20th 2007 12:39PM
Awesome!!!
oops, sorry! thought Apple made it...
Patrick @ Nov 20th 2007 12:43PM
I would, if it's cheap and works.
BTW, Is there a way to disable flash content on just one website(this one)? The ads here, primarily that huge one at the top with the flustered PC guy talking to the hip, suave, Mac guy, slow down my browser, inhibiting my "browsing experience". A few minutes ago, the sound turned on in another tab, and started playing several iterations at the same time, and they kept repeating. The browser would barely respond. It took me several minutes to get over to the tab and navigate safely to google.com.
Yes, the first time I saw a PCguy/MACguy ad, I thought it was mocking Apple, and yes, I chuckled, before realizing it was their own ad. Not to display fanboyism here, but one must admit, enforcing the "Mac owner" stereotype in their own ads is a wee bit silly.
But hey, at least they're funding Engadget. :)
joe23521 @ Nov 20th 2007 12:51PM
My browser crashed twice today already due to this thing. Not to mention how obnoxious it is. Please get rid of them, Engadget. Seriously.
parr @ Nov 20th 2007 12:52PM
how-to remove ads (for your browsing pleasure):
1. download and install "Adblock Plus" from this website- http://adblockplus.org/
2. OH WAIT, you're already done! =]
simple, eh?
Patrick @ Nov 20th 2007 1:00PM
Hey! Nice, parr! Thanks buddy. :)
luidabruin @ Nov 20th 2007 1:07PM
my firefox (os x at home and win2000 at work) keeps having problems with multiple tabs of engadget thanks to the hug ad!!
this sucks!
kodey @ Nov 20th 2007 1:31PM
@luidabruin -- dude if you don't know how to get rid of the ads what are you doing hanging out on a tech blog?
read parr's reply and stop complaining.
js @ Nov 20th 2007 3:15PM
I wonder how much Apple pays engadget these days?
Scooter @ Nov 21st 2007 2:19AM
Same here.
Firefox is crashing with multiple versions of this ad running in full audio, when more than one tab of Engadget is open: even when neither ad is supposed to have audio switched on (even when both are paused).
Suggest you fix this pronto: it is putting me off visiting until this lame ad is gone.
michaelportent @ Nov 20th 2007 12:48PM
This design makes me want to punch myself in the face and frankly, I agree with Will. Apple's new Nano design is a disaster. Even having Feist on their TV Spots can't save me from vomiting whenever I see the thing.
RJR @ Nov 20th 2007 12:59PM
I don't understand why people don't like the new nano design as opposed to the old one. I'm not an apple kid, but I like the short and wide newer version. Maybe it's just me since I'm short and wide myself.
michaelportent @ Nov 20th 2007 1:03PM
I'm not so much opposed to the short and wide thing as I am the lack of consistency between the Nano design and the direction of the iPod Touch and the iPhone.
insertAlias @ Nov 20th 2007 2:01PM
Why would you want to punch yourself in the face?
Lein @ Nov 20th 2007 1:01PM
Damn, they don't mess around with getting right on to copying a design. By the looks of it, they went so far as to copy the off-level screen of the early 3G nano.
Or that's just simulated screen. Hopefully just that.
Danny Boy @ Nov 20th 2007 1:21PM
Right now Apple is the one sucking big time with their oversized Engadget ad. I can't multi-tab 'cause all the Apple ads cause the browser to crash. How ironic is it that they're bashing MS when this stupid ad is making me resent them.
CraigJ @ Nov 20th 2007 1:36PM
I've seen more than apple ads there. It is Engadget's fault for selecting the hugest and most intrusive format. I have a seriously fast machine (recent core 2 duo, 4 GB RAM) and it still makes FF drag a bit and caused the occasional FF restart. It forced me to finally install adblock... I'm all for blogs making money for their services (i.e. advertising) but when it screws up my general web experience and causes FF to lock up and I lose all my tabs, I am pissed off.
I will gladly remove adblock so you guys can get you $.02, if you guys (Engadget, Digg, etc,) kill the CPU cycle sucking bullshit flash ads...

IndepM @ Nov 20th 2007 1:26PM
figure that, a MAC ad crashing windows PC's. Not very good publicity. heh.
Tachikomatic @ Nov 20th 2007 2:04PM
Commenting on an off topic subject just to get an ad placement for your site. Not very good publicity. Heh.
IndepMusic.com @ Nov 20th 2007 2:55PM
are we not allowed to post signatures? thanks for your input.
LinuxISortaRules @ Nov 20th 2007 5:35PM
Ummm, it didn't exactly make Safari dance and grin on my Mac Mini, either.
Just for grins and because I'm sooooooo bored doing pre-holiday release Hell backups, I checked it out on a Linux machine where I have FF installed. Sucked there, too.
It's the ad. It needs to go away.
KC @ Nov 20th 2007 2:52PM
Wait... I've said this before... it's squarish, display on the top, controls on the bottom, it must be an ipod knockoff!!!
Olivia @ Nov 20th 2007 2:55PM
for the price not only would I get it, just got 2.

Whoops, replied to the wrong post somehow.

Except... iPods are from an American company, not Japanese or Korean, and they are made in China likely by the same people counterfeiting them. Not to mention this isn't exactly a counterfeit.. it's not like it's called the ePod from Applez or something. It seems like your post is off topic, copy-and-paste to advertise a blog post. Someone's opinion on blog is not exactly a reliable source for "what's happening in China."
Brian @ Nov 20th 2007 3:20PM
Um... what exactly is the purpose of a single volume button?

Draw whiskers on that control pad and you've got yourself a Felix the Cat MP3 player!

Can we PLEASE get rid of these KIRF entries - Nilay, spend some time looking at gadgets instead of being WalMart's PMP product assessor (You can find some really no-name PMP's at WalMart, you should do a side by side hands on with those instead of this KIRF crap which only judges the asthetic or lack of it.)
go PMP production - the more they produce the lower the prices should get because of volume IC consumption! go cloners!
Remember, you don't have to buy it if you don't want to.
Wwhat @ Nov 20th 2007 9:35PM
It says it's digital on it, now that's alluring!
PenaltyKillah @ Nov 20th 2007 10:33PM
Ahh... the horror.
Even this clone is ugly for a clone.
Praise the MTV/MP4-loving Chinese!
(And the MTV format really sucks btw. Half the quality is sucked into nothingness, and it's screechingly annoying.)
TerraCotta @ Nov 21st 2007 12:27AM
In two years, the iPod Nano will have exactly the same format. And it will become an instant best seller.
If this photo had iPod printed somewhere on the case, the majority of people with find it has the design of genius.
znoen @ Nov 21st 2007 10:53AM
Looks more like the Maxfield Tiburon series...
Wonder why Engadget doens t do a review for this player....
