Call/Recall boasts of 1TB optical disc, reeks of vaporware
Our vaporware alert hit yellow earlier this year when Call/Recall bragged about a multi-terabyte optical storage solution while providing no real proof that it existed, but now we're afraid that's been ratcheted up to orange. The latest from the company -- which still seems to believe that no pictures are necessary to substantiate its claims -- is the "industry's first 1TB optical disc." This device has reportedly been developed and tested behind closed doors, and unsurprisingly relies on its own 2-Photon-3D technology. Additionally, the company purports that it is "entering into product design and discussion with leading manufacturing partners," so we ought to see something coming down the pike relatively soon if all of this is legit.

What they neglected to mention is that the optical disc in question is five feet in diameter. :-p

Abuzar @ Nov 21st 2007 11:48PM
Now I'm totally being honest, but on my PC I don't even have 1 MB of porn. What about people like me? I guess Films and Music will take up that space.
Zeus the God @ Nov 21st 2007 11:48PM
HD gadget porn.

I have way too many backed up downloads on dvds and single TB can free up more space fer shure.
Well I use dvd/jewel cases so i can label on the sides to stack up nicely (before anyone tells me to just use a plastic sleeving method :p)

Didn't Constellation 3D have a working 1TB optical disc? It used fluorescent dye and the disk was clear. They went belly up after a some sort of mob takeover or some type of vague power grab.

How the hell can you say that you invented something and you haven't even made it yet? I wish I could come up with a idea, spin some fine sounding bs and then build it. /sarcasm

I believe what was meant, is that they were going into the product design- as in they have the prototype working, but are not making a production version.

Goddammit. Sorry for the triple post. Go with the second one. The first one was a screw up child.

Actually, 1TB discs aren't new either, they're just not ready for mainstream yet.
Skip Blu-ray, let's see HVD: http://www.gizmag.com/go/3661/

Not vaporware... but not on store shelves either.
In my experience in the last ten years optical and floppies and hard drives is that there are announcements about tech all the fricken time which will provide us with 5X-50X capacity. And at least half of them come true ... within five years or so. Blu Ray is how old now? So what will be announce two years from now? 1TB sounds unsurprising.

On the site, it shows a graphic with a man holding a blue dot that appears to be about 2 or 3 cm in diameter. There is no caption, as this is a header bar. In any case, Engadget should inquire if this is the disk rather than simply stating that pics of the disk don't exist. Additionally, check out the technology tab.

Pffttt that's nothing. This vapourware company (http://colossalstorage.net/home_diskdrive.htm) is claiming 200 terabits per square inch by 2008!
m4ximus @ Nov 26th 2007 6:07PM
holy jeez, thats only a month away! I better queue up my hd pr0n.
PJK @ Nov 22nd 2007 4:53AM
But can they remember it for me wholesale?
ahl @ Nov 22nd 2007 11:30AM
This is not vaporware, all you have to do is dig around there website a little, then dig around the various OSA, SPIE, Chem Rev, journals not to mention patents etc... to see you people don't know what the ___ you are talking about.
Magallanes @ Nov 22nd 2007 11:50AM
Or may be a well prepared scam and not a kid playing with photoshop.
Bill @ Nov 22nd 2007 12:51PM
I'll believe it the day I can order the drive and media from newegg.
