I-O Data launches ultra-tough 16GB HDMC flash drive
I-O Data is very worried about your data. Very. Worried. How concerned is the Japanese company about protecting your precious files? Well, they've gone and created a 16GB, freezable, droppable, completely water-proof USB flash drive just for your sake (and sweet Yen). You need only watch a few moments of the psychedelic mind-melter that is the promo video to realize you should... nay, must, purchase one of these puppies while the gettin's good -- as it were. Check out the technofied vision after the break, then be prepared to drop ¥25,300 (around $230) to own a piece of history.

*thanks to IE7Pro*
Tom @ Nov 21st 2007 12:26PM
That's the same thing I was thinking! It's like a ridiculous infomercial from the 80s, but in Japanese....the thing just keeps going.
nick normal @ Nov 21st 2007 10:15AM
no pun intended, right?
Bombaclaat @ Nov 21st 2007 10:21AM
but, will it blend?
a ham sandwich @ Nov 21st 2007 10:26AM
you know, as much as i hate it when when people post what you said or the "will it play doom?" stuff, i think this time, it works. bravo.
tits @ Nov 21st 2007 10:25AM
yeah! corporative video are often that cheap in japan... they dont care so much, and dont pay so much too!!
kitchen was funny! I almost believe she was going to make it fry!!!
majortom @ Nov 21st 2007 10:37AM
the Japanese pronounce it FLY. As in flied rice, flied media.
Nice to see that disco is not dead, but alive and well in Japanese promo videos.
svetoslav.dankov @ Nov 21st 2007 10:48AM
It's not true - japanese people pronounce it "furai" since the closest thing to an "f" is a "fu" hehe. plus their "fu" is something between a "fu" and a "hu".
You think this is a bad video - you must see their TV shows. 65% of all TV shows are about food during most of the show ... the other 35% are TV shows showing people and local celebs bullshit (and behave like 15 year olds) and then eat the food they will be talking about for the rest of the show ... it is ridiculous.
Scooter @ Nov 21st 2007 11:24AM
yes, the tv is bad - almost as bad as the radio!
I really wish she'd dipped it in some tempura and fried it up. Now that would have been a good demonstration of this thing's staying power...

I like tv in japan... really! and food tv show still are better than all the boring tv crap in canada... at least they spend real money in their comedy show!
my favorite by far is the Batsu Games 1 or 2 times per years with Downtown... 2 hours of deep deep idiot pleasure for me!

I bought a Chinese brand "Hyperdrive" travel drive (Golden Yip) from Chinatown and it doesn't have the toughness of this model, but it does have built in WiFi. 4GB
You charge it just 2 hours or so and then disconnect it from the computer. Windows computers with connection wizard recognize it over 802.11 b/g and they allow you to download to/from it.
My only dissapointment is, the transfers are a little slow.
I like it because I can keep it in my pocket while I am accessing it.
Kris S. @ Nov 21st 2007 10:28AM
I think the video was made to be played on one of those gigantic screens they have in the middle of cities in Japan.
Andy @ Nov 21st 2007 10:49AM
Cool idea, I reckon. But I have a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 1GB drive that has successfully been through the washer and dryer about 5 times now, and still has all of my data.
znoen @ Nov 21st 2007 10:58AM
You know that someone eventually is gonna shuf it up his pooper.....
athousandleaves @ Nov 21st 2007 11:01AM
That thing nearly shared Steve Irwin's fate when they dropped it into the aquarium....
Angus Hedger @ Nov 21st 2007 11:19AM
God.. that video was insane.. I want one now o.o;
The out take at the end, even the fish wants one!
BestSnowman @ Nov 21st 2007 11:48AM
Not really impressed, I've seen countless tests of flash drives involving water and almost all of them survive water if dried out. The only difference is this one has a water seal on it. Whoop-de-doo
Rainier @ Nov 21st 2007 11:48AM
I honestly thought that lady was going to make tempura out of it, and then amaze us by showing that it still works afterwards!
tealfixie @ Nov 21st 2007 11:53AM
nice fish tank....thumbs up!
Dualboot @ Nov 21st 2007 12:04PM
None of these things has ever happened to my Flash Drive. I have however dropped it, stepped on it and in a worst case scenario, a bus could drive over it (after hitting me). Will this drive stand up to these tests? My feeling is no, because the connector is not adequately protected.
I also think it's kind of weird to tell your boss: Wait while I unwrap my USB connector from my drive...
Joey @ Nov 21st 2007 3:31PM
every one of those fish died because of the toxic chemicals used to make the USB strap.
K-J @ Nov 25th 2007 6:03PM
Who else wanted her to cook it?
