I thought significant other was a term used instead of husband or wife because just because you're male doesn't mean your "life partner" is a woman.
Not everybody wants to get married to their partner, and not everybody can. ;) So "SO" is usually more appropriate for generalisms, such as here, or when you're not sure if a couple has "tied the knot" or not.

Im thinking it might be a good time to build that extension to the house, that way I can ensure that there are no gas logs near it, plus I get my much dreamed of, dedicated games room. Although I may have to concede to the walk in wardrobe my SO has been on about as well.
How about releasing a trash bag for the Fender guitar, because it's truly a piece of cheap "Made in China" garbage.
