Nokia's N810 internet tablet gets unboxed
Look, we're right there with you -- wishin', hopin', gettin' down on our knees and begging like crazy for someone to take pity on us and pop for the N810 this holiday season. Well, at least one lucky gentleman has already had the pleasure of cracking open the sweet stuff -- AKA, Nokia's latest and greatest internet tablet -- and has put all sorts of nasty pictures on the internet (we suspect in an attempt to make us insane with jealousy). The post also has some useful and interesting info in regards to the software and functionality of the device, so you can get informed while ogling the photos. We recommend you hit the read link and check out all the graphic details... and don't forget -- the Engadget crew needs love too, so feel free to drop something silver in the mail for us come December.

Engadget, can you please start to file all these unboxing posts under a "unboxing" tag? It will just make it easier when searching for this stuff. Cheers
bob sakamano @ Nov 25th 2007 2:28AM
i saw that it's there now for this post...as well as on other posts...did they update them all?!?!? they must be more bored than us.
superfresh @ Nov 25th 2007 7:45PM
So which should I get? An eee PC or the Nokia?
bob sakamano @ Nov 25th 2007 2:25AM
engadget we would also love you more if you gave this away to the second person to post a comment once you were doing reviewing it.
holycow @ Nov 25th 2007 2:41AM
mmm... sexy... the phone.. not the guy
holycow @ Nov 25th 2007 2:42AM
geez not the phone.. i meant the internet tablet -_-
trevor @ Nov 25th 2007 2:44AM
I only wish it were a phone! Then it'd be perfect! Truly, jaw-droppingly perfect!
BubbaGump @ Nov 25th 2007 3:23AM
he lies,
he means the guy :P
JohnTitor @ Nov 25th 2007 2:47AM
woah, I see an N810 article, and N810 ad on the side, and an N Series ad below the article...
Abuzar @ Nov 25th 2007 8:07AM
I don't see any ads at all :P
william @ Nov 25th 2007 10:49AM
They are obvious Nokia fans!
colin @ Nov 25th 2007 3:15AM
wow, whoever unboxed that is one lucky guy
gerbick @ Nov 25th 2007 4:00AM
Just ordered mine on Friday. Besides waiting on delivery, I'm now waiting on the software to catch up too. Skype and a few other "need to have" programs aren't ready yet, they've updated the OS for it already once. Gizmo Project does support multiple IM's as well as IPKall for free phone calls (in) and video conference calls, and even calls out to landlines.
I just would like to have seen the Flash performance upgraded. Not looking too good from what I've seen over at internettablettalk.com.
Still it was a must-buy for me since I hate carrying my laptop sometimes.
Kevin @ Nov 25th 2007 8:08PM
Actually, I flashed my n800 with OS2008 and flash performance is greatly improved.
bachviet @ Nov 26th 2007 5:14PM
I flashed my N800 to the latest N810 firmware and it runs a lot better.
Keats @ Nov 25th 2007 4:04AM
With 87% of the world population being right handed, I wonder why Nokia came up with the brilliant idea to put the big thumb-navigator-button on the left side of the keyboard.
gerbick @ Nov 25th 2007 4:16AM
To allow you to type with your right hand.
Even though I currently own the 770, the d-pad is comfortable enough to be used with the left hand to navigate and peck-type with my right hand with the stylus for the on-screen keyboard. Works pretty well, actually.
Podaman @ Nov 25th 2007 4:24AM
Where's the D-pad on a NES/SNES/Genesis/etc controller?
I think it can make sense on either side.
marc @ Nov 25th 2007 5:43AM
Excuse my ignorance but outside of the aesthetics I fail to see the uniqueness of this product - if it had a phone it would be too big and any smaller and the keyboard becomes useless. Just cant see where it fits in?? The iphone makes more sense as an internet device than this IMHO.
Theboss @ Nov 26th 2007 6:41AM
How would it be too big as a phone? This thing is quite comparable size wise to the iphone, I doubt it is bigger, to my eyes they look around the same size. I'll take a physical keyboard any day over the smudge attracting virtual iphone keyboard. Tell me how the Iphone makes more sense as an internet device when this nokia device matches every internet capability and feature the iphone has?
Besides it looks better than the iphone anyways..
Jesse S @ Nov 25th 2007 6:54AM
Let's see, you can use the iPhone to place calls, listen to music, and watch videos, on a small screen.
With this you can do actual work...You know, this is useful. It is more than just a play-thing.
brian @ Nov 25th 2007 7:35AM
Size comparison between N810, iPhone, BlackBerry 8700, and the obligatory deck of playing cards.

xbit @ Nov 25th 2007 2:53PM
@marc
The N810 has a much higher resolution screen (800×480 vs. 320x480) making surfing possible without any zooming or scrolling. It also has supports for web technologies that are missing from the iPhone, i.e. Flash. Lastly, you can pair it with a HSDPA phone to surf on the move at high speeds. It has lots of advantages over the iPhone as long as you aren't looking to make traditional phone calls.
Bruce Brown @ Nov 25th 2007 6:42AM
Me again??
marc @ Nov 25th 2007 7:24AM
Well -this device is not a phone so is vastly more limited than the iphone in terms of functionality and I have not had any difficulty using the iphone keyboard. The dimensions of the 810 are:- 5.04 x 2.83 x 0.55 inches and 7.97 ounces - the iphone is:- Height: 4.5 inches (115 mm) Width: 2.4 inches (61 mm) Depth: 0.46 inch (11.6 mm) Weight: 4.8 ounces (135 grams). I would say that this is not exactly a pocketable device quite apart from the weight difference (almost double the iphone). So this is why it makes more sense to me.
Alex M @ Nov 25th 2007 9:30AM
But the "Jesúsphone" only has a 3.5" screen and NO qwerty keyboard. And its an Apple product.
Tony @ Nov 25th 2007 1:08PM
This can play Doom.
Benson @ Nov 26th 2007 11:39AM
You might say this is not a pocketable device,
but I'm typing this comment on an N800, which is
slightly larger -- and I routinely pocket it. When
walking outside, I put it in my jacket pocket;
when I'm inside, and wearing a shirt with pockets,
I often put it in my shirt pocket.
To me, it seems quite pocketable.
The iPhone has the multitouch, which is totally cool, but is necessary on the iPhone for zoom gestures. The N8x0 has 2.5 times the screen, so much as I would like multitouch, it's not necessary. This is a micro-laptop, and you use the web just like you would on a laptop.
The result is that neither is hugely better as an web device; but once you leave the realm of web-browsing with zoom-and-pan, the Nokia's screen completely iPwns! (Sorry, I just had to.)
The N8x0 is way better for many of the other functions of an _internet_ device: VNC, rDesktop, SSH, VoIP, text-chat/IM, e-mail.
Joshua Engel @ Nov 25th 2007 9:37AM
this device has been for sale for over a week at the nokia store in NYC. What a shitty device no aim video support the system is slow as balls . Overpriced crap. Nokia needs to add beter games and support from real companys not just beta products that crash. The nokua rep was a waste of time. Only good thing is you can buy anything in the store use and abuse for 30 days and return for full refund no restocking. Still N810 is shit
riggs @ Nov 26th 2007 9:03AM
"nokia needs to add games"
rofl, youre probably like 14 or some shit.
Mark @ Nov 26th 2007 11:57AM
I also think more games need to be included on portable devices. I've surprised a lot of people with the built-in Solitaire on my Windows phones.
Joshua Walters @ Nov 25th 2007 10:47AM
I have got to get me one of these. I have the 700 and LOVE it! I need to get this one now though!
Deek @ Nov 25th 2007 11:53AM
Got it couple of days ago and have been loving it. Been looking for N800 for some time, but the looks where horrible and was missing qwerty so this was winner for me already when they announced it.
I do understand why some dont like it and all you iphone owners chill its not going to destroy you belowed I product =D
Victor @ Nov 25th 2007 12:31PM
HTC should be welcoming Nokia to 2005.
semiown @ Nov 25th 2007 2:35PM
Can this thing create/write/edit documents etc? I can't find anything about that on its product page on the official Nokia site.
Benson @ Nov 26th 2007 12:06PM
Depends what sort of documents you mean. Someone already mentioned the built-in editor. If you mean more of serious office-suite work, your options will include:
Google Docs (requires internet connection)
Abiword (GNOME word processor)
Gnumeric (GNOME spreadsheet)
DocsToGo for PalmOS, run in the Garnet emulator. (Garnet VM only supports 320x480, so only uses a small portion of available screen space.)
Mr. Picklesworth @ Nov 25th 2007 2:49PM
Holy crap, NCIX is importing these from the States! (Special order, mind. Saves the bother of bringing it through the border / finding a vendor that ships here).
Any Canadians, give them some sales so that when the price goes down, they still sell the things :)
Tissot @ Nov 25th 2007 3:21PM
These things seem to sell fast. So i was left empty handed for now. Kinda suprising didnt think it would do so well.
gadget hunter @ Nov 25th 2007 3:50PM
Forumer is giving one of these N810s out for their b-day.

Marcus @ Nov 25th 2007 5:57PM
This kind of technology is so coolllll!
I would love to get my hands on this!!!!
VERY NICE!
greg @ Nov 25th 2007 9:53PM
Im a teacher, and Im lookgin for a small device that does what this Nokia does, but I also need it to be able to run powerpoitn and word. I also need it to be able to connect to a projector.
This may be a bit too optomistic, but does this Nokia do this? Thanks guys :)
scabby @ Nov 25th 2007 9:59PM
I picked one up using a corp account at a local retailer earlier in the week. It's rather nice, with its only weakness that I've found so far being that flash runs, but runs like a hog. If you have a web page (i.e. Engadget), running stupid Apple flash ads, you'll be hard pressed to browse multiple sites on it.
And while I like it so far, I will reserve my final judgment to see what kind of apps are released for it: it's good, but until the software load is hot for it, it's not worth $450 or whatever you'll pay for it.
And as for one question in comments, yes you can make documents from this and save them either internally or externally. I will be trying to use some online word processing sites tonight and see how they run, but generally, if Firefox on the PC can handle it, this can too, since it's got Firefox running. Over the web, it handles Javascript/AJAX, Flash, movies, and for the web coders, DOM, DIVs, and dynamic page creation stuff pretty well. Its able to handle web pages made for ~750 pixels width without any scrolling or zooming, and can zoom from 80% to ... way too close to be practical.
mex @ Nov 25th 2007 11:17PM
crap, crap, crap, crap, crap... i owned the n800 and was very sluggish. No proper office suite, everything never leaves beta and if it does they still crash, video never works smoothly unless you spend hours converting all your videos to a lower res. No 3.5G, no IrDA, no tv out, no 3d drivers, n810 has crap gps receiver, you have to pay extra for directional voice guidance for GPS software, unless you know how to port apps(which is not very easy) forget ever seeing your favorite linux app on there, its a brick with potential but little function. only good thing is the screen res... ooo, u say you can remote desktop and run doom or quake and even run kismet, big deal. Nokia say this is "step 3 out of 5" - so they knowingly will release incomplete products - Advice for Nokia: wait till step 5 then release something worth the money. Nokia is worst than apple milking us dry with product release after product release, i hate apple, but at least when they ask for our money, they are confident that the products are finished. It was such a relief when I sold my n800, unfortunately got less than half than what I paid for within 6 months of owning the ugly brick. deja vu anyone?
Tim @ Nov 26th 2007 12:54AM
Re:Semiown Yes you can create/edit documents. Click "Utilities" click "Notes". You can also sketch notes. Click "Utilities" click "Sketch". PDF files. Click "Utilities" Click PDF reader. I have created 100 of documents. I view Internet daily. Wifi easy. I take pictures with the camera. System updates are easy. Never leave home without my N800. Keep in my front bluejeans pocket.
Frank @ Nov 27th 2007 8:35PM
How Much?
bruce @ Nov 28th 2007 9:56AM
The cheapest price I have found is $422 at www.CDW.com. Has anyone seen a cheaper price?
bruce @ Nov 28th 2007 5:51PM
P.S. Just saw $29.99 with free shipping at www.buy.com.
bruce @ Nov 28th 2007 5:53PM
CORRECTION: price was $429.99
Thanos @ Nov 29th 2007 6:21AM
I prefer to take the archos 605 wifi in 80gb or 160gb. I think that nokia n810 is a great device but it costs really a lot more than it is really worth.
bob @ Dec 1st 2007 6:42PM
Well I finally have one, it is way cool.
My only complaint is the external flash is mini-sd.
Hard to find, and really fumbly to insert.
I don't want an adapter because I want to put it in and leave it.
2GB is largest available.
Not sure if tha min-sd will survive long unless the offer 8 and 16 gb
Else this is a way cool device, very useful, and intuitive to use.
They don't give you a manual - except pdf.
