Sarcos' military exoskeleton becomes a frightening reality
Have you been waiting for a legion of half-man, half-machine storm troopers to descend upon your city and blaze a round of hellfire in all general directions? If you said yes, that's kind of weird. At any rate, you can consider yourself one step closer to cyborg annihilation thanks to a company called Sarcos and its semi-scary exoskeleton -- which will make any regular old soldier into a Terminator-like killing machine (as far as we can tell). Sure, they demo the unit lifting heavy equipment and reducing fatigue of the user, but we know what this thing is really for -- and it doesn't involve food drops. Check the video after the break to have your mind shattered into a million delicious pieces.

Ah, the Starship Troopers are here... (not the movie, but the book / animated series).
Though, the big question is, how much battery life do you get out of this thing? Can't be fun to run out of juice in the middle of a firefight (or dangerous, even, if you're loading heavy items since they can fall on you...). Or does it go stiff, iron-maiden style?
Hoooray one more way to lower the physical abilities of a human body, and make us weaker than we already are, way to go!!
But will it blend?
I'm listening right now to Guns By Computer by Saul Williams and Nine Inch Nails.
Comon guys, it's ROBOCOP!
Gotta say though, scary implications once they get a small enough, long lasting power source for these things.
all yu guyz never reed appleseed or what?
Am I the only one disturbed that our military will soon have this technology?
Naw, plenty of people the world over will be frightened by the idea that the US Military has cyborg super-suits.
The question is: how long until a $40 explosive ruins a $3M suit?
As most can imagine... Master Chief here we come.
CBDN, why do you ask? >:)
The real question is can it not onlu load large amounts of cargo onto a Dropship, but also have enough power to have the Alien Queen "Stay away from her, you BITCH!!!"

Starship Troopers, Here we come!
the range of motion that this suit is limited to and the size/weight of his back pack make me question it's ability to stand back up again
I just don't like how the voice over talks it up so much, 'walking up stairs, no problem' it walked up one stair then stopped
right now I still think it'd make a great forklift and maybe to rescue/clean up collapsed buildings
it's stability and how precisely he was able to punch the bag was impressive(though he stuffed up the bag in the end)
anyway as I said give it a couple years and it'll have shaped up enough, for now it's fugly, it's circuitry junk needs to be shrunk down to about a tenth of what it has now and they should think about putting the battery's somewhere other than the back as it's to easy to just chuck all the leftovers their, if the had some battery's in the back and put a couple behind the calves and or on the sides of the thighs the user could replace them Her/Himself without taking the suit off or getting other people to deal with the battery's
oh and being able to jog doesn't mean I'm a motor cycle either 'dumbass'
"It's amazing that some people have no notion of reality given that they have only ever experienced fantasy and fiction and can't extract themselves into the real world. It's a clea rindication of who is a rational adult and who is an inexperienced child (or posesse sonly the mental faculties of one)."
and was that meant for me or all those guys who've played to much Halo?
...HELLS YEA!!!!
I have to say this looks really cool. I would also ask though... If this thing is so close to useful why does it need to be tethered, and why didn't they show some real superhuman strength. All the examples were things a muscular man could do. Lets see some real super humanism, and not just ammo cans.
A.I. comes to mind for the rehabilitation purposes.
I, Robot comes to mind for the exoskeleton integration.
Buy more shares in Raytheon, their press release on November 12th 2007 is about acquiring Sarcos.
Here is the current slogan from Raytheon:
"Raytheon: Aspiring to be the most admired defense and aerospace systems supplier through world-class people and technology"
People seem to miss the most important factor especially if you look at this from a marine or footsoldiers point of view.....
It's not how many ammo canisters it can load thats important
The fact is they could strap this thing with so much armor to make it like a walking breathing armored tank with the mobility of a standard foot soldier. That's where the importance comes in in my view
Even if its not to strong can you imagine a soldier fully decked out in 1-2" thick armor plating with a big ass gun maybe a 50 cal chaingun with an ammo canister on his back dropped via helicopter air lift in the middle of the bad guys camp. MUAHAHHAHAHAHA
I work next door to this company and the video doesn't do justice to how sweet this thing is in real life. I was amazed at how smooth the movement is.
the first step to a real master cheif
Wikipedia is obviously not infallible.
In the Cute Fun Album for 1953, the story 'Champion Robot' by E R James features totally enclosed eight foot high powered suits for use on farms and in factories. The hero robot 'Creakyfoot' belongs to a boy, Andrew, who climbs through a door in its back into 'the soft cushioned space inside. Creakyfoot fitted him like a suit of clothes. As the door closed behind him he looked out through the robot's big glass eyes.'
I am compiling a history of mobile robots including correction of misinformation on the web regarding steam men. It looks like supersuits should be added. If anyone has more clear citations I shall be grateful for the information.

This is crazy. Just like Starship Troopers is right. If you think about the impact this will have in 10 years it could be huge.
Mount an onboard computer and power supply for long term operation. Weapons should be locked into the arms and targeted like in a modern fighter jet. If not Power Armor like Johnny Rico's then this is possibly a precursor to a mech... Battle Mech.
Seems Elementalish as well...
Well the recruiting numbers will no doubt go up as all the gamers will actually be able to use their otherwise frail and physically limited bodys to kick some a$$.
Not to mention how tempting it would be for us retired Joe's to get back in the game
You know maybe patlabar and gundam are not so fanciful after all.
The US military is still sponsoring the exoskeleton research?? I believed it was abandoned by the military years ago, citing feedbacks from soldiers on the inability to quickly get out of the suit and conceal themselves from enemies. On the other hand, this technology has great industrial and space exploration applications. Or robot dance application...
Finally! Our troops can carry portable miniguns! Why both storming the building? Just level it with 10,000 bullets.
Seriously now... this is bad arse tech that has nearly limitless potential for both military and industrial uses. I can't wait to see these things being introduced in ten years.
