Old gear gets steampunky new life with "Ambience Enhancer"
While it's not quite on the level of some of the steampunk gear we've seen, devientART member porkshanks' so-called "Ambience Enhancer" is at least considerably more practical than some of those previous contraptions, and it recycles some gear that would otherwise have been discarded, or has already been discarded. That bit of kit is an MP3 player that was apparently found on the ground near a bus station, which got spiffed up with some brass and leather and then got paired with a set of vintage Cannonball Empires headphones, whose innards were replaced with those from a set of some decidedly more recent Sony MDR-006 phones. The whole thing was then, naturally, made wearable with a handy wrist strap.

Misspelled "DeviantART" ;-)

I wouldn't wear/use it, but I always like mods, even if they are only skin deep.
Thunderbuck @ Nov 26th 2007 4:30PM
I WOULD wear it. It's very cool, and the leather adds a nice feel to the tech.
A smart designer is probably working something up like this for the iPod nano.

I dig it, and I'd totally wear it in public. Great conversation starter, I'd guess.

That looks like an old school power ranger morpher. Makes me feel like I'm 6 again. :)

10 bucks if you make it through the airport with that thing.

Does it monitor the amount of oxygen they're pumping into your suit?

If it has a grappling hook, a la Boba Fett, then I'm sold!

what puts the "punk" in steampunk? I can understand the steam part, but I don't think anyone's ever been called a punk for having a leather/brass obsession... though it's just one letter away from an S&M obsession
sam @ Nov 26th 2007 9:14PM
comes from cyberpunk, which has a more obvious punk aesthetic. If anything I think it would refer to the attitudes of characters in steampunk fiction anyway, rather than would a punk wear this.
Cayce @ Nov 26th 2007 8:52PM
Steampunk is actually an offshoot of cyberpunk.
As for what cyberpunk is, check out the wikipedia article. It's pretty good.
Sirocco @ Nov 26th 2007 6:28PM
It's ugly. I would not wear it, nor associate with those who do.
Paris @ Nov 26th 2007 9:02PM
What if a super hot girl was wearing it and asked you out?
Al @ Nov 26th 2007 8:17PM
This showed up in the podcast RSS and got my hopes up.
joegibes @ Nov 26th 2007 10:21PM
Is that a Sansa m200?
I've been using one of those (512 mb) for about two years now... Hold switch is broken and the battery cover is taped on, but it still plays music just fine.
Here's looking for the Zune 80 or whatever for christmas...
nikster @ Nov 26th 2007 10:49PM
It's only a matter of time until a company comes along that exclusively makes steampunk inspired designs for gadgets.
I have always hated steampunk per se, but this reminds me more of the Victorians in "The Diamond Age" and those are cool. Very cool.
