Zune Originals engraving now available for 80GB models
Take note, Zune dudes and dudettes: the Zune Originals engraving -- which has heretofore been relegated to the 4GB and 8GB flash versions of Microsoft's new player -- is now available on the big daddy, the 80GB. That's right -- now text, wild graphics, and combinations of the two can be emblazoned upon your media player, serving as a testament to your original and inimitable personality till the end of time. Did we mention it's free? Motor over there and check it out, right this second.

You, sir, are a moron.
StrangeBum @ Nov 29th 2007 10:15AM
I sir, think you know not what you are talking about.
I'm digging this, I think I shall order one up tonight or tomorrow (payday). This is what I was waiting for.
Kevin @ Nov 29th 2007 10:51AM
Actually Jack is right. The world does not care. The US may care, but the Zune is not sold outside the states. I think the 80GB Zune Originals is the best one yet and would really like to see them sold in the rest of the world.
chadow @ Nov 29th 2007 10:09AM
Holy crap Phenom, mine did the same thing. The replys for that Jack dude somehow post to JPN's.

"Engadget rules."
Indeed engadget, indeed.
Khris @ Nov 29th 2007 10:20AM
Should have put "I wish I was an iPod" on it.
daaper @ Nov 29th 2007 10:28AM
Awe...jealousy is a stinky cologne. Don't take it out on the zune because you jumped the gun and bought an ipod.
Justin @ Nov 29th 2007 10:51AM
If jealousy stinks, improper grammar is worse.
"I wish I *were* a Zune."
FIFY.
Khris @ Nov 29th 2007 11:07AM
The grammar mistake was intentional to coincide with the comment. ;)
@daaper - No jealousy on my part. Friends don't let friends buy Zunes!
daaper @ Nov 29th 2007 2:55PM
Ha ha ha! Oh gosh that's funny! That's really funny! Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. "Friends don't let friends buy Zunes!" You know, I've, I've never heard anyone make that joke before. Hmm. You're the first. I've never heard anyone reference, reference that outside the commercial before. Because that's what they say in the commercial right? Isn't it? Oh no, it's "Friends don't let friends do drugs." And, and yet you've taken that and adapted it out of context to insult Microsoft in this everyday situation. God what a clever, smart person you must be, to come up with a joke like that all by yourself. That's so fresh too. Any, any Titanic jokes you want to throw at us too as long as we're hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity. God, you're so funny!
Justin @ Nov 30th 2007 8:10AM
Sorry, it was, "Friends don't let friends drive drunk," but your point is well made regardless. :)
Shadowise @ Nov 29th 2007 10:13AM
I hope the Zune Original's service comes to the UK. The personalisation was the little push I needed to get one... but I won't bother if the UK doesn't see the same treatment.
Mobius_1 @ Nov 29th 2007 10:22AM
Microsoft stepping up the competition!!! How about a worldwide release sometime soon???
poco153 @ Nov 29th 2007 10:42AM
Does this mean that every other store will be getting more 80's? I've had my on order for a while now, I'd love to see it actually ship!
Paul @ Nov 29th 2007 10:45AM
Got mine ordered now ;] I've been checking like 5 times a day. I'm worried the shortages will make it sell out fast.
Arnie @ Nov 29th 2007 11:02AM
Got mine thanks Engadget!!
david.m.carroll @ Nov 29th 2007 4:31PM
I got mine today too. Thanks Engadget!
Yin @ Nov 29th 2007 11:12AM
I wish they would offer other colors. I like the green that the 8 gb ones come in.
Either that or release the 16 gb flash versions, dammit!
sarnzzle @ Nov 29th 2007 1:04PM
Anyone know if they are coming out with other colors?
Paul @ Nov 29th 2007 4:50PM
I really love the green too :[
Alan @ Nov 29th 2007 11:20AM

iOrange @ Nov 29th 2007 11:23AM
Wow I wish I had waited.. well I am listening to my 80 now.. now regrets.. maybe I will buy another.. iPods on ebay if anyone is interested ;=)
kastonie @ Nov 29th 2007 11:27AM
the only thing i hate about the zune is the fact I CANT BUY ONE! Unfortunately im stuck with best buy store credit and they only sell them online and they have been backordered from bestbuy.com for a while....
i just have to be patient. But I want to bash my head in when i see one in wal mart...i wish i just had real world money instead of this store credit bs
o rly @ Nov 29th 2007 12:39PM
You could buy it online (when it's back in stock), return it to a brick and mortar store, then use the in-store credit for the re-purchase.
Backlin @ Nov 29th 2007 9:12PM
Yeah, virtual money sucks dude.
modified @ Nov 29th 2007 11:34AM
Really disappointed I waited and there's no alternate color options. I guess the free engraving is still cool.
tonymrep @ Nov 29th 2007 12:10PM
I'm buying one! Looks great and even greater in person. Despite some lackluster reviews, I like its controls and interface much more than the regular ipod. Those that haven't yet pledged their eternal souls to apple should check it out.
KettleCallingPot @ Nov 29th 2007 2:11PM
Pledge their enternal soul to Apple?
Last time I checked, iPod worked on both Windows & Mac. You have a choice.
Does the Zune work on both? No, it does not.
Also, you can run Windows on an Apple. It's Microsoft that is trying to lock you into their world. Pay attention, they've been doing it since they started. If it weren't for the many lawsuits brought against them, everything you used your computer for, all the programs right down to the internet would be an MS product! There wouldn't be any choices. And what a terrible world that would be...
tonymrep @ Nov 29th 2007 2:25PM
Ha, I knew somebody wouldn't stand for this. I already knew all this crap, just like everybody else who uses the internet. I was merely taking a jab at people like you who feel the need to take sides and plug apple all day long. I buy good products, regardless of who makes them. Microsoft isn't perfect, but neither is apple. Fanboys - get a life!
Btw, I own products made by both. My impression is that apple lovers turn a blind eye to their problems. To be perfectly honest, I've had more problems with apple stuff than pc stuff. I had to return my iphone 5 times to get a decent screen. And the vista complaints are unfounded; the os is stable and the only real problem is that people don't have the hardware to run it properly, or are too stupid to realize they can just turn off all the visual effects.
michael @ Nov 29th 2007 7:06PM
@KettleCallingPot:
Microsoft locks you? Um, I think you have it the other way.
OS X works on Macs ONLY. MOST Apple programs work on OS X ONLY. Most of my programs that I use on my Mac are completely made by Apple. There's some 3rd party programs you can install, yes, but for the most part, it's dominated by Apple stuff. Some of their mainstream software, like iTunes/iPods can work on Windows, or otherwise the whole iPod ecosystem would NEVER exist, and NEVER live. Apple has business sense to do that.
Likewise, most Microsoft programs work on Windows only. Some mainstream programs, like Microsoft Office, are available on OS X. So Microsoft isn't open?
And like Apple, Microsoft understands business sense. Developing a program for a small minority system, really isn't worth the time and effort to them, if only a few will actually use it. Plus, Mac users are more inclined to use Apple products over Microsoft products anyways.
So the point is, is that I find Apple much more restricting than Windows. With Windows, I really have a lot more freedom to do what I want, like install whatever I want, and not have to worry about compatibility and all that. It just works.
KettleCallingPot @ Nov 30th 2007 10:32AM
@ tonymrep
is 'm rep short' for microsoft representative? Because you certainly sound like one. Calling me a fanboy? Read your original post. You feel compelled to let us all know that you are buying one, even though it got lackluster reviews. Yeah? And? Then you throw in an unfounded jab (that you are now saying is 'bait')
I think that you are full of BS as well. I too own products by both companies. I have been using Mac since system 7, and Windows since 3.1
I am willing to bet you do not have an iPhone, barely ever use a Mac, let alone have one. I know several IS people who manage hundreds of systems. They all hate Vista, that is a fact. They keep telling me it is like Windows ME all again. They are calling it a "blatant OS X rip off" which is no surprise to me at all. That is what windows has been all along. And get the new OS (which version? The $400 one? And turn off all the reasons you upgraded to it, so it will run? You can call me fanboy, I'll just call you dumb.
@micheal
No, I don't have it wrong. I have always been able to open PC files on my Mac. That wasn't possible on Windows for quite some time and still poses issues to this day. Yes, OS X works on Apples only, and MS prays it stays that way. What do you think will happen to the Windows market share if Apple releases a version of OS X that runs on any PC? Once that is a profitable option for them, I am sure they will. Apple is the most profitable PC manufacturer out there, it was their business plan & they did it. GO ahead, take a look at DELL stock prices, and now take a look at AAPl. THAT is smart business. What MS does is just imitate other successful innovations, and use their marketshare to force them onto consumers. Only 6 years ago, Gates & Balmer were talking the iPod down, saying it encouraged pirating & anything else negative they could hurl. Now they are all about the DAP market? Yes, because someone else paved the road for them, just like every one of their successes. Windows = Mac, Office = Lotus Suite, Explorer = Navigator
X Box = Playstation, Zune = iPod. Could you cite one thing they do that is all their own?
All your programs are completely made by Apple? So you just have what your computer came with then? Which by the way, is a far better offering than a standard Windows PC. As I type this, I am running programs made by Adobe, IBM/ Lotus, Quark, Mozilla, Lacie, Softworks, and yes, Microsoft. The only Apple program I regularly use is iTunes. You install whatever you want under Windows? Yeah, I am sure that never caused any problems & "it just works" especially without virus protection. Keep in mind, I have been using Windows for years, I am not a Mac only person. I call BS on you. And lastly, MS office on the Mac: Microsoft made a open patent deal with Apple in 1997 (where they aped quicktime to bring you Windows Media Player, which they used to try & stop Quicktime & make their version the defacto standard) where they agreed to continue to develop Office for the Mac. Office was going to be discontinued as another step in MS attempting to kill Mac and nothing more (just one of the reasons why old Apple fans are so rabid against MS) They made a 150 million investment in Apple stocks, which at the time were selling for between $10 & $20 a share. They are now at 184 a share. Do some math, that $150 million in stocks is now worth over 1.5 billion. One of the best investments MS has made.
Sounds to me like both of you need to do some reading, and less time glorifying your computer company of choice, because you are the ones sounding like the fanboys to me.
