iriver's W7 media player and D27 dictionary loose in the wild
iriver just took the wraps off their D27 QWERTY dictionary and W7 personal media player they teased us with last week. The D27 if a full-size, electronic dictionary with plenty of audio and video support. It features a 480 x 272 display, FM tuner, 2GB of flash, and up to 27 hours of battery life depending upon usage habits. More interesting for westerners however, is the W7 touchscreen (finger or built-in stylus) media player which shares the industrial design of the W10 -- in fact, it may well be the very same WiFi device with Skyhook positioning only now sporting a W7 moniker for domestic S.Korea release. Video of the W7 in action after the break, plenty of pics and more video just beyond the read link.
Update: More details in. The W7 goes on sale next week and turns out to be a WiFi-less, Skyhook-less version of the W10. The rest is pretty much the same: up to 8GB of storage with miniSD expansion, 480 x 272 WQVGA display, and 4-hour battery for video.

both look quite nice.
could the dictionary used to do something else? it looks better than the eee, and it seems to a have a good battery life.
and since comparisons between apples and oranges, err... apples and irivers will be inevitable, i will just start with it:
the toucscreen device does look quite nice, and i like the idea that you can use it with buttons or a stylus, but as it seems from the video its not really a can use, but rather a have to use, judging from the size of the "buttons" on the display. the guy had to try really hard with the tip of the finger to use that thing.
there should be a switch to cange between stylus mode (many small buttons, good for complicated operations) and a finger mode (few big buttons, for the basic functions)

i'm pretty sure i messed with teh D27 last week in Seoul... Since i can't read Hangul, i kept trying to figure out it it has some sort of wifi connection, and to my (lack of) suprise, it doesn't. I had a VERY hard time figuring out how to do anything on/with it, the menu system was rather complicated... and the salesperson couldn't find any way to change it to english- which you can do with every Cowon device out there.
Not really suprising, as i doubt they plan on marketing the D27 anywhere outside Korea.
Haven't seen teh W7 though.

well the D27 is meant to be a dictionary targeting korean users so i don't think iriver engineers found the need to place english menus on the device.
the w7 semms to have dmb but does it really have wi-fi? can't seem to locate the 'internet' icon on the menu (on the video)

Sigh... iRiver... when will you release a HDD player that will replace my iHP-120...
Stu L Tissimus @ Nov 30th 2007 7:05PM
Indeed. The click wheel on my iHP-120's dying, and as much as I'd love another iRiver, the lack of a player with the same amount of storage as a 4 year old model drives me insane.
Shadowise @ Nov 30th 2007 7:24PM
I can't stress how reliable this player has been over the 4/5 years I've had it.
I've taken it apart numerous times, dropped it down the stairs, broken the play button, dropped it in the bath, and it's still kicking. I have to turn it on via the remote now, but that's a small detail, lol.
Unfortunately, iRiver never got round to updating it to compete with any of the new iPods that are flooding the world... so I've kept using it till iRiver get their game together, or till I get one of the Zune Originals.

How about the coming-soon (to Europe) W10? Looks very similar to the W7 but the W10 has wifi built in too!! For once we get something with better specs *starts saving up ready for launch*
Bernie B @ Nov 30th 2007 4:14PM
I've been waiting for updated word on the W10 for nearly 6 months. So much for it's touted summer release =P

I'm disappointed by the D27. It looks exactly (and I mean EXACTLY) like the D26: http://www.pocketables.net/2007/04/imagining_the_i.html
It has more features, but it's hard to be won over by them when they've just been crammed into (what looks like) the D26.

If it doesn't have wi-fi then I'd rather buy the Samsung P2. The iRiver looks fatter/heavier and the UI seems more complicated than it needs to be. And it has worse battery life: 4 hours video vs 5 hours on the Samsung.

Looks a little bigger than the 2nd-gen clix. Meh.
PenaltyKillah @ Dec 1st 2007 9:56PM
That looks just a little bigger than the 2nd-gen iriver clix.
