Mystery, climate-saving invention to be unveiled at swanky dinner
While some past pronouncements of world-changing inventions haven't exactly panned out as promised, this latest one will at least have a pretty large stage on which to prove itself, with none other than Al Gore and others paying £1,000 or more apiece in the audience. As you might expect, however, things are being kept as vague as possible ahead of the big unveiling, which is set to go down later today in London. One of the few apparently clued in in the matter, British Inventors' Society founder Kane Kramer, would only go so far as to describe it as "a new science, a Super Material," adding that, "It would be 80 per cent cheaper than any alternative means of production, and it will contribute in a major way to reducing climate change." So, it's "something," but we'll just have to wait and see if it delivers as advertised.

anyone heard of 'Dr.Evil'?
He's somewhat of a driving force behind all of this global warming crap.
He wanted to make a formula to produce 'volcanic ash' particles and put them in the air above the ice caps. Kinda like when theres a volcanic eruption somewhere, the temperature doesn't change for weeks at a time i.e. the ice would re-freeze..or something crazy like that.
The thing I find funny,is the fact that even if all that ice DID melt, the world would NOT flood. People are paranoid. It's not like all that ice just appeared there one day, it's part of the overall mass amount of water where it sits.
Damn! I was all set to unveil the Segway Cold Fusion Perpetual Motion Device and Wii Emulator next week. Curses! Foiled again!

Dr.Evil..ha. suits him pretty well
Torgo's Executive Powder. It has a million and one uses. I'm sure one of them reduces climate change
Torgo...the greatest film character of all time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torgo
My predicition is it is someway to produce biodesiel in a cheaper and more efficient way, reducing dependence on oil and reducing pollution....
But the sad truth is that pollution is not causing global warming...global warming is part of a natural cycle on this planet...ice ages and thaws, mini ice ages, mini thaws, etc...it is tied, in part, to the cycles of the sun
Ugh, all previous changes to the climate have had nothing to do with the sun. Before you go telling people the "sad truth" why don't you find it out for your self first.
My god this has all been studied and documented in per reviewed journals and yet you think no one has addressed it yet. Willful ignorance is the worst kind of ignorance.
@Dan
Yes, the sun has an effect. Of course it does. Sun gets hotter, earth gets hotter. Sun gets colder, earth gets colder.
But the same thing is true for C02 in the atmosphere. More C02 = higher temperatures. There are bubbles trapped in the ice at the poles, those layers of ice have built up over millions of years. Those bubbles tell us exactly how much CO2 was in the atmosphere, and clues from those bubbles and other sources give us a very good idea of the temperature over the last few millions years. Every time the amount of C02 goes up, so does the temperature.
And there are plenty of perfectly natural ways the amount of C02 can fluctuate. Like Volcanic eruptions. Evolutionary changes. Geologic changes.
Thing is the C02 levels are now THE HIGHEST THEY'VE EVER BEEN as far back as the ice record lets us go, and they are only going higher.
And even if that doesn't get through your head, consider this: Why in the hell should be continue to shovel mountains of cash to countries that hate us?
Uhm, the 'global warming' theory was made long before someone noticed our planet might be affected by it you know, it's what they used to explain the condition on the planet venus.

And even if there is a natural cycle in something that doesn't mean we can't screw it up, you also have a sleeping cycle but you still get messed by jetlag.
@Dan,
I am not brainwashed but I have done a lot of research into the science behind human-caused global warming, and the story is so detailed and thorough that you would have to be a delusional fool not to accept that it's true. Yes, the sun is ONE factor in the Earth's overall climate, but to suggest that it is the ONLY factor, or even the MAIN factor is ignorant in the extreme. There are many factors, but the only one that is varying to anything like the degree that the Earth's climate is now varying is the proportion of greenhouse gases in the climate.
The climate has never changed as fast as it is now. What other factor can you come up with to explain this? Don't try the sun again - much research has been done into its activities and there is NO WAY that it can be the cause. Do some proper detailed research, rather than just trotting out the deluded theories of the self-serving denialists - the answers are all out there if you look hard enough.
Typical answer from another brainwashed lemming...to think that the sun has nothing to do with the climate or that changes in the sun have nothing to do with climate changes is naive at best!
I am still waiting for Al Gore/global warming "scientists" to explain the historical climate changes on the earth in absence of human's being around to cause it with pollution...
Would be good if global warming was caused by co2 and not the sun. The sun is getting hotter, plants breathe co2 and thrive with abundant co2. Flame on.
Guess we'll find out soon.
I know what it is.
The Suicide booth.
Think about it.
Hrm, Al Gore's involved, will change the world...
Finally! We can rid ourselves of ManBearPig!
So what the hell was it?
probably nothing important, so they didn't post it...
wouldn't be something more like this ?
http://www.blacklightpower.com/
as we're entering the Hydrogen Era, we need more hydrogen nuclear plasma motor engines and there is 3 ways to produce hydrogen : from petrol, from genetically-modified bacterias, & from water with energy.
so is the water engine ready ?
remember the guy who put some water on fire with microwaves ?
so you understand why petrol is expensive now...
So does anyone have any ACTUAL news from the event?
All I can find so far is speculation and "bah humbug" stylee comments.
You'd imagine there'd be a few "real" reporters there, but there's nothing on the BBC website yet.
...and what would you expect from a bloke who registered his name.com (kanekramer.com) only to boast on the front page that HE invented MP3 player 30 years ago but the World wasn't ready for it yet...
Engadget posted it.
Where's the Engadget follow-up?
its baking soda
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/11/29/climate.change.soda/index.html
I can't find any news on the announcement. Google News turns up a couple of articles on the event, but it mainly just describes a love-fest between Gore and Gordon Brown. Nothing about any technology, new or old. The Fortune Forum website says nothing, nor does the British Inventors Society (or whatever it's called).
I enjoy getting swept up in technological optimism, but I think I've been wasting my time on this one.
If anyone chooses to present their scientific work to the public first before going through the scrutiny of peer reviewed journals it's just another Stoerm and Orbo story.
Or perhaps this one was just a PR stunt aimed to milk a few bucks from Al Gore's sect of global idiots.
engadget, why haven't you done a follow up on this article you posted?
Not a peep anywhere on the net and absolutely no follow-up by Engadget? Do you people work or just repost press-releases and emails that you receive? What a gig, regurgitate with some humor... lame.
Ex-stars and ex-politicos band together to reveal "new science".
Bu11shit.
Shame on you, engadget.
I hope you earned your dime, Donald Melanson.
Ya this is crap. Why can't they post an update, even if it's a non-update saying it was nothing of interest? Get your act together Engadget.
is this about spray on solar cells?
thats my guess.
I tried to post twice yesterday, without success, to suggest the same as "Lou" - that I might have to do with the new NanoSolar PV cells which it is said will come in at 30 cent US per watt and will be cheaper than burning coal to generate power.
Anyone hear yet what this breakthrough is?
I have searched over and over and can find nothing reffering to a scientific breakthrough at this London outing. I think it may have been faulty reporting in the first place.
From The Daily Green
http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/global-warming-47120308
The Fortune Forum seems to have come and gone without the anticipated breakthrough on global warming that Al Gore and friends were reportedly going to announce.
It is looking like the London Independent had it wrong when it quoted Kane Kramer, the founder of the British Inventors' Society, about his expectations that Gore would use the forum to announce a breakthrough clean energy micro-technology that would "contribute in a major way to reducing climate change."
You beat me to it.
Pretty great how they note that Gore is in Bali for the UN climate change summit and, perhaps, THAT'S where the announcement will take place. These guys are making so much progress saving the world that they can't keep the announcement venues straight!
It's a bit ridiculous to think that the launch date of something so, apparently, significant didn't bother to register with such smart people. Millions of fanboys the world over manage to figure out to within 31 seconds the impending launch of every new iPod!
Frankly, I struggle with why these people, all of them, continue to host "swanky" events to announce break-through's of any sort. With respect to Global Warming, it smacks of hypocracy. How many of those people flew to the venue, how much power will they consume, how much food is wasted, how many harmful chemicals will be dumped into the environment to clean the dishes, table clothes, etc.???
The internet is the perfect disemination tool, that's what it was created for. As it's inventor, Al should know that.
Just kidding with that last bit, Gore fans!
The point is, if you've got something great, pull together a good web page and GET IT OUT THERE! Let the peer review begin. Hello, Mr. Steorn? Are you there?
