Nintendo's Wii Fit unboxed

Our bosom buddies over at Engadget Japanese got ahold of Nintendo's new Wii Fit and ran through the unboxing ritual for our sake -- they're all too busy burning the carbs to bother with such nonsense otherwise. Nothing much to see in the box, but we're sure you'd rather get started on some yoga than play with a bunch of doodads anyways.

Sadly not all of us live in sunny Southern Cali (or wherever you are). Where I'm at it has been 50mph winds and non-stop rain for a couple days. Fun to play basketball in this weather, or go for a run.

The Wii Fit is like a treadmill on fun steroids. Sounds good to me.

Bah! I was outside for 2 hours running earlier today for winter track practice. It was 12 degrees and snowing. And this was far from the worst we've run in. What's the most fun is when it's a complete white-out and you can barely see your feet. We do extra warm-up laps then, just to screw around.
Yea. In the 3 years I've been on the team, we've never had practice canceled, and there has only been one or two days we've stayed inside. You can exercise in any weather if you actually want to get in shape. And if you don't, why the hell are you wasting money on this thing? I have a feeling that most of the people who buy it will mess with it for a week or two and then it'll sit on a shelf gathering dust. Or find it's way to eBay.

I can't wait to pick this up. For me exercise is about the motivation to do it in the first place, and this seems a lot more fun than "going outside". Especially when "outside" is dark and ~40 degrees, because it's night time and I just got out of work. As long as it covers the basics and gets my cardiovascular stuff going, I'm all for it.

And really, anybody who says Wii Fit is stupid is arguing AGAINST people getting exercise. Sometimes "going outside" is not practical or possible, so why not take your exercise however you can get it? And if it's done in the form of games and challenges, where's the harm in that? I can't imagine why anybody would have a problem with getting in shape and being entertained at the same time.

The (North) American version is delayed because they're having difficulty producing it with reinforced carbon fiber wrapped steel so it doesn't snap in half. ;)
