Nokia's patent application shows 8 megapixel N-series slider?
Here's an odd one for you, a Nokia patent application just revealed those images above. The odd part is not so much the slider mechanism they are attempting to patent. Rather, it's the use of those dumbed-down product images instead of the purposely vague schematic usually submitted to the USPTO. And if we're not mistaken, that looks like "8 megapixel" stamped just below the lens. New N-Series in the oven, Nokia?

It may just be me, but it looks more like "6 megapixel", although that doesn't change the price of tea in China.
RedBull Runner @ Dec 3rd 2007 6:29AM
yea it definitely says 6 Megapixel. cmon engadget, control + scrollwheel on OSX and you could have figured that out quick
computer.dude.28 @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:48AM
"control + scrollwheel on OSX"
Try control + scrollwheel on *Windows*
JosephMohmed @ Dec 3rd 2007 10:26AM
Control + scroll ball in OS X zooms the whole screen in, making it easier to tell that's a 6. As far as I remember, control + scroll doesn't do anything in XP.
jodosh @ Dec 3rd 2007 10:57AM
@Joseph
It sure does zoom in in win XP, even pre-SP1 it did
srw985 @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:28AM
it only zooms the text in XP, image stays the same.
mister XR @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:41AM
Or, if you use Ubuntu Gutsy, the button is +Scrollwheel.
*You need compiz fusion with the enhanced desktop zoom enabled.

It really gets annoying when companies attempt to patent everything they do, but then again it's equally frustrating when all the other companies attempt to copy it because they can't be bothered to think up their own stuff.
If you are able to improve on someone else's intellectual property, you should be able to, but I don't agree with crappy cheap rip-offs.
sergiulucian @ Dec 3rd 2007 6:43AM
that`s definitly a 4 in my book!
Jonathan @ Dec 3rd 2007 6:46AM
Definitely a 5 or 6... get some new glasses Engadget!
Gavin @ Dec 3rd 2007 6:47AM
Looks more like '6' megapixels to me.
Sphynx @ Dec 3rd 2007 7:21AM
No matter how many MPs - that thing is fucken ugly!!!
Ben Danyi @ Dec 3rd 2007 7:47AM
oh com on engadget thats clearly a "6" not a "8".
Aniruddh Chaturvedi @ Dec 3rd 2007 7:50AM
I bet it is 6 MP!!!!
Semi @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:06AM
8 is more newsworthy than 6...
blade417 @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:10AM
This design is hideous. That definitely looks like a 6 to me though.
JJV @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:13AM
I'm pretty sure thats a six.
Anto @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:14AM
It says SIX megapixel, what are you, blind or something Engadget!?
Brooks @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:25AM
Ummm, yea thats a 6. Its that number after 5 and before 7.
Tim Brown @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:35AM
Who cares if it is 6 or 8, without a decent lens, the pics will be just as crap as the phone looks. Function can have some form, unfortunately Nokia thinks that form is best served by making it look like a Philips electric razor
sam @ Dec 3rd 2007 9:41AM
i think the point of the design is that they'll be able to use better lens, not to have 4/6/8 or whatever mpix...
Nick @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:35AM
Definitely a six but eight looks better in the title ;).
http:\\www.gameconsolesshop.com for great deals on consoles straight form eBay by the way :).
computer.dude.28 @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:50AM
you're right about the 8 looking better but why did you put http:\\ ?
The Aggie CEO @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:36AM
looks like a 5 to me.........sorry
Constable Odo @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:48AM
Fugly mess. Who needs it?
whot @ Dec 3rd 2007 9:09AM
looks like a 6 to me.
anyhow, i think the megapixel race for camphones is overdone... 5 megapixels is more than enough for what the candid shots we want. Seriously, who'd depend on phones if they wanted to print out something on the size of an A3 paper. Phones are for candid shots, and people are missing that point. Get a DSLR if you really love photographing so much.
silverblackvoid @ Dec 3rd 2007 9:38AM
yeah...whatever dude
Jon @ Dec 3rd 2007 9:56AM
People who love photographing will go medium format film.
jodosh @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:01AM
@Jon
no, people who love photographing will weigh the pros and cons of large/medium format film and DSLR photography and choose what best suits the situation.
Andune @ Dec 3rd 2007 10:44AM
Oh and if you look at the right "slide-out" picture with a litle fantasy it looks like 57... or maybe even 107.
A phone that changes Mexapixels on-the-go, thats cool.
Andune @ Dec 3rd 2007 10:45AM
And imagination would probably be a better word to use than fantasy...
jaysins @ Dec 3rd 2007 10:49AM
It's an ugly design but who buys a phone to show off how cool it looks? As long as I can load my NES, SNES and sega emulators, check and send email, surf the web, listen to music, GPS, take good pictures and video and send them to friends or upload them directly to my flickr account like I can with my N95 it could look like a tampon for all I care. Plus I keep mine at 3MP usually to cut down on noise a bit so I wouldn't worry about MP too much.
Evan @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:23AM
6 MP not 8.
srw985 @ Dec 3rd 2007 11:28AM
Would be a great follow up to my N95 if it wasnt designed like that.
Jonathan Bergeron @ Dec 3rd 2007 1:07PM
It looks like it says "6 Megapixel"
Nick @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:59PM
yeah idk looks 6ish to me. plus the skarven is supposed to have an 8 megapixel lens anyways, this isn't so new
Richard @ Dec 4th 2007 4:45AM
Looks like a replacement for the N93i. There are people who like the N93i form factor and dont want a small chintzy handset but something that is of a reasonable size that has a real zooming camera.
