DIY'er constructs elaborate Metroid arcade console
We're not exactly sure what's with the sudden resurrection in arcade obsession, but hey, we're not complaining. On the radar today is a showy Metroid arcade console that was apparently created from the ground up by one astoundingly diligent fanboy. The exterior primarily consists of plywood, lights and paint, while a home-built PC resides within to handle the emulation duties. There's also a built-in sound system with subwoofer, a 17-inch Samsung LCD and a clay-based Mother Brain to keep things genuine. Click on through to check out an (admittedly lengthy and unnecessarily dramatic) video after the break, and don't even pretend that you don't long for one just like it in your abode.[Via Joystiq]

I think DIY should be driven by actual need or want...I think most of the mods/DIY's coming out are just so people can see themself on here.

This has absolutely nothing to do with getting yourself recognized.
I have been following this guys progress since the end of October when he made it. Engadget only picked this up cause he got an award recognizing it on another site.

Really? My mistake then. It just seemed to me there was a trend developing, I didn't stop to find out anything about the guy who did it.
Next time I have an opinion, I'll just put my foot straight into my mouth. =)

So while I'm here socializing before work starts again. Do you guys remember that day when that one guy wrote an essay in his Engadget comment? It just popped up into my head and made me laugh... Good times.
Ok time for work :'(.

It's not sudden. There's always been an arcade obsession. Name me a single console or computer OS that doesn't have homebrew arcade development. If there is one, there's another from that same year that does.

I just wish there was some very well documented plans for these arcade cabinets. Every time these come out, they promise some easily-copied plans--but always fail to bring those to light.
What I am talking about is actual plans in a PDF or something, not just dimensions written in a list. That does me no good. I mean plans where I can tape them to the plywood and cut them out with my bandsaw.
Prove me wrong.

If you want to see tons of these, go over to http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/
Some of them are just insanely kickass.
This isn't anything new...

But, can it play Doom?
