ATI DisplayPort cards trickle out
Now that monitors with DisplayPorts are starting to hit the market, you're going to need a compatible graphics card to get in on all that high-bandwidth action, and it looks like ATI is first of the mark with the RV635 XT board that Hot Hardware recently got a chance to test. Sadly, they're not giving up any hard numbers just yet, calling it more of a "show and tell," but we're definitely intrigued by the claims of daisy-chained display support and the ability to run four displays off one card.

Are these HDMI ports?
Dean @ Dec 6th 2007 8:52PM
no, its display port, HDMI is copyrighted or something, so you have to pay royalties to use it, that is no the case for display port. at least as far as i know.

Is there internet that mysterious?

Is English?

I CAN HAS DISPLAYPORT??!
Nar57981 @ Dec 6th 2007 8:56PM
Well, if you would please click the 'read' link, and go to the original page, you would be kind to notice a big picture in the middle, that has a caption that you would note as saying the middle port is in fact HDMI!
Dean @ Dec 6th 2007 8:58PM
Fail!
the caption you talk of
"Left To Right - DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-D (from LCD display)"
those are ports on a monitor...
the card has 2 display ports and a dvi.
Jonathan Keim @ Dec 6th 2007 9:23PM
You fail dean, look at the image. The middle port is most definitely an HDMI
Dean @ Dec 6th 2007 9:32PM
AMD's RV635 XT With Dual DisplayPort And DVI-D
-talking about the card
Left To Right - DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-D (from LCD display)
-talking about the monitor.
come on guys focus
Scott @ Dec 6th 2007 11:30PM
Ummmm... NO, it's most definately not HDMI. It has two DisplayPorts and one DVI. You can tell they are both DisplayPorts because of the rectangular shape with the angled lower left corner.
Cash @ Dec 7th 2007 12:51PM
Gotta call Bunk on that photo caption simply from a logistics standpoint. I'm sure you guys have all seen an HDMI cable before, so I'm equally sure you've seen the huge plastic head that surrounds the actual connector. Now look at that picture again... you think there is any way in hell you'd be able to plug in a fairly industry standard HDMI cable into the middle port without it at least partially covering up the Display Link port to it's left? Nope.
The Display Link connector head is thinner and not much bigger then the connector itself, much like USB, so if both outputs were Display Link this setup would make sense. As has been pointed out many times by various companies, the tech guys don't talk to the Ad guys, and vice versa. You're better off using common sense then relying on Ad copy.
Wwhat @ Dec 7th 2007 3:35PM
It's simple, if the next word starts with a vowel like A,E,I,U,O then it becomes 'an' else it's 'a', so 'a HDMI connector'.
Just a helpful hint.
KilgoreTrout @ Dec 10th 2007 9:46AM
Wwhat, do you also say, "I woke up a hour ago?" No? Gee, why is that? Could it be because the a/an rule follows how the word is pronounced and not how it is spelled (as many H-leading words begin with a vowel sound)? Same goes for acronyms like HDMI.
Just a helpful hint.
Backlin @ Dec 6th 2007 9:13PM
Man, I'm looking forward to this. Royalty-free video? 'S cool, 's cool.
billybob @ Dec 6th 2007 9:37PM
actually kids reread the caption - this pic is of a dual displayport model, but they also have a displayport-hdmi-dvi model. both pics are in the link.
billybob @ Dec 6th 2007 9:38PM
ahh i was a bit too late!
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Dec 6th 2007 9:39PM
As far as I am concerned, display port is totally unnecessary. The concept display port reminds me of sony and their desire to create something that is not needed.
Displayport will render my beautiful GDM-FW900 useless. Gamers should fear displayport, it will destroy monitor compatability!
zargon @ Dec 6th 2007 9:45PM
Yay, yet another stupid port we have worry about supporting. Hopefully they have their ducks in a row unlike HDMI's ever moving spec and the multitude of changes.
Anyone remember firewire they were trying to push? My first HDTV had it, where the hell did that go. DVI also had a nice year or so run.
Can we just get one standard and stick with it... please?
Constable Odo @ Dec 6th 2007 10:03PM
More crap Macs can't use. Screw ATI.
insertAlias @ Dec 6th 2007 10:31PM
Screw ATI because Apple chooses to limit what hardware that they offer/support? I'm all for compatibility, but the focus of your anger is off target by 180 degrees.
Tiptup300 @ Dec 6th 2007 10:37PM
Hmmm, as long as there isnt any DRM on it, I'm happy!
Carl M @ Dec 7th 2007 1:16AM
What's up with the golden fingers?
Sando @ Dec 7th 2007 9:40AM
They're CrossFire ports.
skhawaja @ Dec 7th 2007 5:03AM
DisplayPort +1
Nice going on the LCD Panel with the DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort - things are looking up for the LCD HDTV panel side of things to come - daisy chain all those LCD TV's at the sports bar please :]
Anyone know that cable length limitations of DisplayPort at the moment?
Elledan @ Dec 7th 2007 6:35AM
"Anyone know that cable length limitations of DisplayPort at the moment?"
3 meter for full bandwidth, 15 meters for reduced bandwidth (1080p). From the Wikipedia entry :)
Bombaclaat @ Dec 7th 2007 11:06AM
so another reason to upgrade your newly purchased monitor, video card, tv or buy another f'ing adapter? we just got hdmi and dvi. ati? nvidia fo-ever!
palehorse @ Dec 7th 2007 1:27PM
I love the concept and bandwidth of the DisplayPort connection, but it will be practically useless if the entertainment industry refuses to drop DRM (HDCP)...
I just wish the hax0rs would find a way to break HDCP and/or cablecards already...
Jesse S @ Dec 7th 2007 3:31PM
What's the point of DisplayPort if it supports the same resolution as DVI?
If it supported higher resolutions (like that POS HDMI does), then this would be a different story...
