iPhone Dev Team releases code for the AnySim unlock tool
The iPhone Dev Team has been calling their AnySim iPhone unlock tool "open source" from the start, but they've finally made good on their promise and posted the code on Google Code. Have at it, hackers -- not being able to unlock new 1.1.2 iPhones is surely putting a damper on someone's holiday season.

If I were to buy an unlocked cell phone but the any sim or next sim does not come with it can I just put in my T-Mobile sim card? Will this work then or do i need to buy an new any sim or next sim card?
I didn't really mind them keeping the source code under wraps - this gives everyone, including people who want the iPhone to remain locked - full disclosure
However, on the plus, with the community at large working on the project, work-arounds for new iPhone firmware versions as their released will come quicker. And who knows, we may eventually snag an un-blockable unlock solution in the progress.
I thought you could unlock a new iphone with version 1.1.2 by just downgrading from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1. Can someone shed some light about this?
I insist, Apple is on this one, They need that a unlock be abalable on X-mas so they do the big sale!
Why? Apple hates unlocked phones since they don't get the monthly revenue from the phone contract.
These folks are the best!
Sigh. The lack of an unlock is sure putting a damper on my holidays. . .
Oh well. I'm still really thankful to the Dev Team. It's because of them that I could at least get some functionality out of my phone. Thanks guys, you're the best. You really are replacing everything that Apple's left out.
Here's hoping for a 1.1.2 unlock soon!
Downgrade to 1.1.1, do the unlock (jailbreakme.com worked well for me) and then use OktoPrep to safely upgrade to 1.1.2 .
What is everyone complaining about? You can jailbreak 1.1.2, just requires some extra time and paying attention to what you're doing and don't use a tutorial from someone who can't spell correctly, as that is not a good sign that they are competent. ;-)
(I actually found the right steps in a text file accompanying Jailbreak 1.1.2 -- http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html)
blurry,
The phone can be JAILBREAKED, not UNLOCKED. If the phone comes with 1.1.2 firmware out of box, then it canNOT be unlocked, because the baseband version 4.6 can't be unlocked/patched yet.
Stupid question, what exactly does this mean? You can unlock your phone for free?
Doesn't putting up the code just let Apple know what they need to do to keep the phone locked? Seems like in this instance you'd want a "wink, wink" access rather than full disclosure.
Don't you just love the sweet sweet irony the "Slide to Unlock" lever takes on now?
I just bought an N82. Unlocked, unbranded... and for less. I'm yet to meet a fellow Englishman with an iPhone as it happens. Hand on heart, I've yet to eyeball anybody actually using one.
Regardless of my own opinions about the devices lengthy inadequacies over here in the UK, I will admit to being quite surprised by that. I mean, it's an Apple product, and to date that trendy tag alone has more often than not been enough enticement to sell anything.
Nothing wrong with trying to get more for your money, but have you even tried using an iPhone to compare it with your N82. You didn't say what part of Britain you lived in, but are you in some rural area, by chance.
That being said, how many Nokia N82s have you seen being used. You're probably not going to see any number of iPhones for six months or so unless you hang out around the stores that sell them.
The British aren't stupid, but they might just be slow to catch on. If friends start showing their iPhones around, it might be enough to persuade a few more people at a time. If the price on the iPhone is lowered, they'll probably buy them in droves even if they lack 3G and other common features.
It's ease of use that is the driving force behind the iPhone, not the number of features. Any fool (tech geek) can see that the iPhone is short on features. It's the average guy/gal that will take to it if it's just plain fun to use.
Always with the bloody N82 here!
Give it a rest guys. Save it for the Nokia "free with music" posts.
The N82 isn't 'officially' out yet, so no, I haven't seen anybody with one. I work nationwide and after spending a week in Covent Garden last, not one iPhone did I see. For my own needs... and desires, the iPhone simply cannot provide. I won't argue that what it does, it does with aplomb, but it still doesn't warrant what we here are expected to cough up for that limited functionality.
The average joe won't (and hasn't if you read around) take up the 'ease of use' provided by the iPhone here because it is ridiculously price prohibitive. It's actually cheaper to get a phone that does more... off contract.
And this is all prior to rinsing the damned thing of it's inane restrictions when you do buy in to the package deal. Which in turn breaks a number of contractual and warranty related rules designed to protect that very same 'investment'. The product as it stands is just not worth the risk, money and hassle that it currently demands from my point of view as a consumer foremost, and 'prosumer' second.
Evidently, the current iteration doesn't suit the needs of quite a few, otherwise Apple wouldn't be releasing a new firmware point release every five minutes to keep the barndoor shut, and these guys wouldn't need to release their source to keep up with those incessant changes.
And so begins the decline and fall of the iPhone Dev Team as their code gets stolen and sold for ungodly amounts of money, Apple starts looking at the code and disabling every hook into the phone they were using that they couldn't figure out, and the community collapses into disjointed anarchy much like the OSX86 community when it lost the JaS releases as the holy source of easy to install OS X DVDs.
Congratulations iPhone Dev Team, you just destroyed yourself by making one of the few things that is harmed by becoming open source, open source.
You know, Apple could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by just releasing the SDK. Lots of users aren't jailbreaking just to change contracts, but to get apps.
great guyz...waiting for ur anySIM 1.1.2!
Can you unlock your phone if you havn't yet signed up for a contract?
Here's the message at that Read link. Thanks to the "iPhone Dev Team" but somebody needs to brush up on his or her English.
"You may know anySIM, the most popular and free unlock solution for Apple's iPhone. Because of the public request and to archive a constant code quality, we now opensourced it!
The source will go online at firday, the 7th of december. Anybody is welcome to contribute patchs to the software on the proper way. You will be able to submit potential changes to the tree via svn by than. We are looking forward to your contribution!
Feel free to join IRC as well at irc.osx86.hu"
I've got my iPhone unlock and running 1.1.2, sure you can't unlock a Out of the Box 1.1.2 iPhone, but it works if you upgraded to 1.1.2
so when it comes down to the iphone theres 3 things consider 1.Bootloader 2.Firmware 3.Baseband. The firmware version 1.1.2 is able to be jailbroken and the baseband 4.02.13_G version is able to be unlocked via Anysim 1.2.1u BUT! only when an older bootloader is being used, all the new out the box iphones have a 4.6 bootloader which hasn't been hacked yet to allow the unlock to happen. See the bootloader is kind of like a bios for computers. Apple would never let a software upgrade re-flash the bootloader as people know from flashing bios thats a very dangerous thing and would most likely brick a good percentage of their phones, thats why there replacing the bootloader chips in the factory hence why the 1.1.2 out the box (otb) hasnt be unlocked. more information about the 4.6 bootloader and progress on hacking it can be found at http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/1.1.2_Bootloader
It's really easy even if you have a 1.1.2 out of the box (in the US). Just option-downgrade down to 1.1.1, install "The Virginizer," and then re-unlock and upgrade to 1.1.2 and use the 1.21u unlock.
you dont know what your talking about stop giving false information, you CANT unlock a 1.1.2 out the box because of the new bootloader dont matter if you downgrade the firmware bootloader stays the same, read my previous post

Sorry, I misunderstood a different guide :(
From an advertising standpoint: shouldn't the padlock in the image be UNLOCKED?
Good this is very good news soon any one around the world can have an iphone even if they cant have all the features but for now I hold off it until its been tested more. I use http://www.ipodtunesdownloads.com for all my iphone and ipod music and movie downloads
