Microsoft releases changelog for Vista SP1 RC
Those of you clamoring for a public beta of Vista SP1 Release Candidate can spend your weekend brushing up on what all is going to change when that download finally goes live. Available now on Microsoft's website is a sizable document outlining "notable changes" in the forthcoming update, which includes improvements in application compatibility, hardware ecosystem support, reliability, performance / power consumption, security, desktop administration, support for new technologies / standards and interoperability. If we tried to even hit the highlights, all but the most vigilant would probably doze off before they could scroll down to the next post, so we'll just advise the curious to hit the links below and cancel every plan you had for the next 30 or so hours.[Via I Started Something]

xp sp3????
Audacious attempt, but no.
I also eagerly await this service pack for XP.
I don't understand all the bizarre negative votes in MS related posts anymore.
Disproportionate to say the least.
@Ed
My Core 2 Duo also flies on Windows 98. Doesn't mean that its better than XP or Vista lol
And for anyone thats having trouble with the constant HD activity disable the service called Superfetch. Those of us who run high end games and Video/Image editing software don't want anything preloaded into the RAM since we use all 2 gigs that are allowed to a single program (I also use Vista x64 which I'm loving with 4 gigs of RAM running all of the CS3 apps at once)
wow first SP coming out and no successful security exploits and viruses! good job microsoft. where have all the hackers and crackers gone?!
But... but... I thought only Macs were secure.
Shhhhhh. You are going to fluster the fanbois.
Yup...I don't even run any antivirus. Hate it or not UAC gives me peace of mind. I control who has access to my computer.
I hope this service pack fixes the issue with my monitor being reset to a lower resolution every 20 mins! I've tried all the "fixes" & diver updates thus far and none of them do the job :(
Yes, why bother listing the changes. It is not like it is a Leopard news to occupy three days worth of engadget posts!
And anyway a Service Pack to Microsoft is equivalent to a new release for macos, so yes, the readers would like a nice writeup on the new features.
Oh, I dunno. I don't think we have to point fingers here .... OSX has been in the process of having bugs fixed ... some major, some minor. Vista's the same way ... more major, some minor.
Ahem. EXCEPT. The UAC is way out of control on Vista. It isn't intelligent as firewall programs which have been out for several years which give options to classes of action like "always allow," always prompt," or "Don't allow." Neither does Vista UAC offer beginner, intermediate or expert modes. All these are validated, middle of the road, current technologies which would allow much more individualized control and be far less intrusive.
Why can't Vista ship with a user friendly implementation of these technologies? Is it blindness, pride (as in not invented here) or just plain avarice (it'd cost more to implement). It's flat out pathetic as far as the user experience goes.
My money is on standardization. You offer 3 views that is 3 additional views that the industry needs to be trained on. That is 3 views a helpdesk needs to learn to ID over the phone when they have a newb on the other end. 3 views that need to be coded for. 3 views that anti-malware manufacturers need to figure out if their wares are going to impact. (Read: Does McAfee and Norton now have to create 3 plugins for Newb, standard, and expert views?
Etc, etc, etc.
One of the fixes is reducing the number of UAC prompts from 4 to 1 when creating or renaming a protected folder.
Check this out: http://www.tweak-uac.com/
It allows you to have 3 choices on how UAC behaves. On, Off, and there's a middle "quiet" mode that cuts out the unnecessary UAC prompts for things like opening the control panel, etc. I have it set to quiet and it's much better. More like it should of been from the beginning.
This is what differentiates Microsoft from Apple. Apple will drop an update and give a 3 sentence description of said update. (And if there is more it sure as hell isn't available to the average user on their site.) Microsoft tells you in detail what they are updating. This is also why Apple will NEVER, in their current form, own the enterprise market. NEVER.
i sure hope it moves my files faster from folder to folder.. Calculating the time takes forever!
since I know you are too lazy to read it yourself:
"Significantly improves the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath."
"Improves performance over Windows Vista’s current performance across the following scenarios:
•25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
•45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
•50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system"
"Improves responsiveness when doing many kinds of file or media manipulations. For example, with Windows Vista today, copying files after deleting a different set of files can make the copy operation take longer than needed. In SP1, the file copy time is the same as if no files were initially deleted.
•Improves the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer to about two seconds."
From what I read, it pretty much fix a lot of fixs and give some better performance on some of the coding. Like the person said above.
Although, on the side note. Don't expect SP1 to eat LESS computer resource than XP. It is just silly if people do think that way. I mean XP SP1/SP2 didn't improve their memory resource compare to the XP RMT... It improve on fixing annoying bugs that is all. Which is one way to make people believe XP SP2 better than XP and SP1...
Pretty much future SP and updates are most likely to be "tweaks" that will "improve" performance, but not eating less computer resource. I don't know if I explain that well. But you get the idea.
I wonder if a lot of people who thought they were being clever saying "omg I'm going to wait for SP1 to get Vista" are actually going to get it. (or just say 'omg sp2')
darn, still no e-sata support for external sata hdd
This is nice and all but has anyone heard how they're (Microsoft or Apple) are going to fix the iTouch not working with Vista x64? I certainly cant find any info on it
Ohh, God yes! :D
i thought i was going to be able to fix some problems today, but i cant find it. and i assume you guys would have mentioned it if it had been opened to public.
guess it was "week of .. "
Not much improvement for an average high school student other than about 15-20 min. extra battery time. Its more trouble than its worth.
Gents, although I have abbandonned XP for a while, happy with Vista, SP1 did not make me happy. Untill I can figure out how to get my 1680 x 1050 resolution om my widescreen with SP1 instead giving me no more then 1280x960 I am not (re)installing it. I'm sure they figure it our for the offical release though..
