You heard that right, folks. Supposedly,
AIBO is back... with a vengeance. According to rumors, the
feisty-but-killed robo-dog from
Sony is making a comeback with a new paintjob and whole slew of fresh features. First and foremost, the re-upped model will be tailored to interface wirelessly with your PSP and PS3, will have a built in headcam which utilizes a motion sensor and facial recognition, and can stream its POV video over WiFi to your system. In addition, you'll apparently get to remotely trigger the bot with your handheld and control its movements, plus you can set it to "guard" your house (though we're pretty sure most enterprising burglars will just turn the little dude on its side if provoked). Of course, right now this is speculation -- Stuff Magazine's piece on the subject (above) gives the rumored bot a 53-percent chance of becoming a reality -- but there certainly seems to be some meat behind these murmurs. C'mon Sony -- the pup deserves a second chance.

Isn't that what wives are for?
True. True. I, first, need to trick my girlfriend into marrying me, and then surprise her with the news that her function is to bring me beer and wash dishes. I was hoping I could get AIBO to do it in the meantime. (Kat, if you're reading this, please don't leave me; if you only knew how difficult doing laundry is when you're not around)
is there any information at how responsive will it be (when controlling it with a PS3 controller) ? and how fast exactly will it be able to walk ?
I think the only thing that could save the PS3 is the Sony SEVS-44936 :

ha for a second, i thought it said AIBO POS.
It does sound pretty cool though. if they can price it right, maybe it will do well.
it's like a cylon puppy!
So this is what Geordi's pet dog looks like...
I wonder if it's still going to cost over $2k US?
Sony must have buried it in the robotic Pet Cemetery! lol
I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey the other day, and I can say that I don't want any robot/partially intelligent computer in my house.
Now, if it had a built-in back scratcher, then this'd be a different story.
53%? Isn't that kind of an odd number? It'd be pretty awesome to see a come back though, my CS department has one of the originals and that was pretty cool and this could offer tons more cool stuff to play with.
Oh, geez. They're marketing it as a companion to the PS3..? I'm having flashbacks to R.O.B. for some reason.
I've got the magazine that article comes from (Stuff, Jan '08) and it's just a wish list and the percentage is a likliehood (that they themselves make up) of the item coming out.
Yes, your robot dog will lock you out of your space ship.
But really, this thing looks pretty awesome. I remember having one years ago and it wasn't that great because it was difficult to interface with and it didn't hold a charge for very long. I would definitely be willing to give it another try if Sony utilized all of these suggestions (and made it look like the one in the picture!). Of course it still better be able to go seek out that pink ball...
I see a new "World's Scariest AIBO Videos" emerging soon!
And if Sergeant John Burnell says no...
AAAAAHHHHHHHH.... Sometimes a news make your day... and this one will definitly make mine !
Please, please make it ! My Aïbo is filling so lonely and ps3 is so dummy
Enjoy your day
if it still cost more than $300 it can stay where it is........
damn $5000+ for a damn robot.........bah.......
Hmm, this is either shenanigans or a very early prototype of a new model using existing parts and a bit of a paint job. The body looks identical to that of the ERS-7, the head looks like it's from the ERS-220 but in a custom shell.
Am gonna wait for aibo PS3.
I'm in the UK so I see Stuff magazine on the shelves. I bought it once; never again. They must be the world's trashiest technology magazine, so it wouldn't surprise me if they made this up based on nothing more than a conversation in the pub.
Screw AIBO...I want QRIO back.
I for one welcome our new masters...
Sure Ill fork out $500-1000 dollars pet its head and throw the pink ball for him/her but it bloody hell better come back with a mojito for me!!! No mojito no deal.
You're kidding me? $2K and it:
1) can't fetch a frisbee,
2) can't play any of my old PS2 or PS games, let alone any of my PS3 games,
3) doesn't come with Blu-ray
Somehow Sony, I'm not at all surprised with you lately. Still disappointed, but not surprised at all. I'll be expecting some news flash about a $1,500 version in the future, however it won't be widely known until much later that you removed the compatibility chip to interface with the original AIBO. Great Job!!
