Sim2 announces $12,000 Domino 80E projector
It's certainly not for everyone, but those willing to tread into five-digit territory for the benefit of their home theater may want to consider Sim2's just-announced Domino 80E projector which, at $12,000 is actually a bit of a bargain compared to some of the company's other projectors. For that price, you'll of course get a full 1080p projector, along with DarkChip3 DLP technology, a 4,500:1 contrast ratio, and just about every port you could want. As if that wasn't enough, you can also add an optional 2.35:1 anamorphic lens adapter, which apparently doesn't require an external processor to change the aspect ratio and, no doubt just as importantly for some, you can get it in your choice of white or matte black finishes.

Is it just me or has there been a lot of stuff on projectors recently?
makishima @ Dec 10th 2007 5:07PM
Man I was going to post the exact same thing
joey @ Dec 10th 2007 5:22PM
I was gonna say the same. $34,000 PROJECTORS?, WHAT THE F**K! But they are pretty cool. I wish there were a better system of posting comments. Its annoying.

Too bad it looks like a black gleep/gloop from the herculoids.
Chuckles McGee @ Dec 10th 2007 5:01PM
For $12,000 it darn well better have a color choice.
Rudiger @ Jan 17th 2008 6:51PM
Unfortunately, the black one is $150 more...
F*cking MacBook.
Slimnod @ Dec 10th 2007 6:42PM
There is no color choice! White= all color, Black= no color
Irfan @ Dec 10th 2007 5:03PM
i like how it looks... hopefully their lens adapter looks decent too...with a typical panamorphic lens adapter it will look kinda silly.

I was just thinking that my poor little Sims2 character was going to have to work his aIssh off to get $12,000 simoleons. It would help if I didn't have him wasting away in a box with no doors...

They don't mention how many lumens this thing is anywhere. I think my company has been getting demos of 1080p projectors in the 6000 lumen range for similar prices, so be sure to do your homework before you spend your $12k.
Chuckles McGee @ Dec 10th 2007 7:51PM
@Slimnod
Well, whether it has color or not is still a color choice :-)

This was clipped from an aussie website, are you sure the price they quoted is in american dollars and not aussie?

when is this company getting sued by EA?

The real story on Sim2 (who, by the way, are not only Italian but have the name rights predating EA's franchise) is the bulb life. You're looking at upwards of 10,000 hours on most of their lamps, and with most lamps costing 5-7 hundred dollars that's real savings for anyone who uses their projector frequently.
Also, it's worth noting that lumens are only a useful indicator of quality when you're using a projector in a lit room. In any light-controlled theater you'll be fine with anything above 1,000, and 6,000 will actually hurt the quality of your image. It's rather like shining a flashlight at an otherwise good picture. If you really need more brightness, get a screen with gain. Better yet, consult a dealer who actually knows something about projectors.
