Tomato's .3-inch thick 60GB hard drive
Sure, we're used to seeing some damn tiny SSDs and flash drives but Tomato's D-18 manages to be only 8.5mm (.3 inches) thick and still pack in a 60GB 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive. That's quite a feat -- and you'll be able to show it off in your choice of five colors, if you can manage to sneak one out of Korea. Available now for 99,000 Won, or $107.

I say tomatoe, you say tomāto.
Allister @ Dec 10th 2007 6:31PM
Tomato! Lolz!
Homeboy @ Dec 10th 2007 6:35PM
I wish the back of my Zune 80 looked that cheerful.
Tom @ Dec 10th 2007 6:34PM
"Looks pretty darn nice" is what I'd be saying if it had a screen.
Zak @ Dec 10th 2007 7:10PM
Why would you want an external hard drive to have a screen?
Tom @ Dec 10th 2007 7:41PM
I guess what I was trying to say is that it would make for a very pretty MP3 player.
wilryt2 @ Dec 10th 2007 6:42PM
Anyone here know a) how to read Korean and/or b) how to order one of these to the states. This would be a perfect "holiday" present for a good friend.
BrianB @ Dec 10th 2007 6:46PM
Some blogs actually mistook this for a media player.
Kevin @ Dec 10th 2007 6:47PM
North or South Korea? Just wondering.
Good_Bytes @ Dec 10th 2007 6:50PM
Probably North Korea... that is why they don't specify it.
Bokiaia @ Dec 10th 2007 6:51PM
Not funny.
I got a friend in Korea so I can get some from him :-D.
Anastas S. @ Dec 11th 2007 12:23AM
When was the last time you've seen a product from North Korea?
wtf do you think?
Bob @ Dec 11th 2007 1:33AM
Heheheh. Actually, my grandparents own several silverware and china sets marked "Made in CCCP"
So the Socialists do actually export stuff sometimes. Plus, everyone KNOWS Windows is written and debugged in North Korea...why else would it be so evil? :=D
Mao Chicom @ Dec 11th 2007 4:42AM
LMAO, Bob, you're one big kingkong idiot. ;p
Mike @ Dec 10th 2007 6:54PM
I don't understand. How does it have a 1.8 inch hard-drive, yet it is only .8 inches thick?
Mike @ Dec 10th 2007 6:55PM
.3 inches, even
Zaidyn @ Dec 10th 2007 6:57PM
1.8 inches referring to the radius of the disk, not the thickness.
Alex @ Dec 10th 2007 7:41PM
not to be an know it all but its the diameter, not the radius.
Chris M @ Dec 10th 2007 11:54PM
Know it all. -_-
:)
xbird @ Dec 12th 2007 9:12PM
0.8 inches, LOL. Not even the nasty brown First-Gen Zune is anywhere near that thick. Unfortunately they don't give out medals for trying so hard to not use your common sense =-/
Dextro @ Dec 10th 2007 7:01PM
great ... you can't read ... wow
Simon @ Dec 10th 2007 7:06PM
read first, write later ;)
it's not *even* a new mp3 player. it's *just* a mobile hdd, but a very thin and very stylish one at that. i would like one. very much.
also i'ld like to know what these two buttons are for. maybe someone, who can read korean, can tell us ...
Haxxy @ Dec 10th 2007 7:09PM
Probably not. PMPs usually use a specific brand hard drive that cannot be replaced. I think, anyway.
Richard Lai @ Dec 10th 2007 7:16PM
My friends and I have never had much luck with Toshiba hard drives. Just my 2 pence.
thebanman @ Dec 10th 2007 7:27PM
cash to anyone who guesses a show that features a computer called tomato. Here is a hint.It is owned by radical ............
Diacronic @ Dec 10th 2007 8:42PM
Cowboy Bebop. Now where's my cash. :p
master cylinder @ Dec 10th 2007 7:28PM
First time I read the head line I didn't see 'thick'. That actually would be awesome, a .3 inch diameter hdd with 60 gig.
Kevin @ Dec 10th 2007 8:57PM
Sure, it has a diameter of .3 inches... it's 1600 platters, though, so it's about 10 inches tall.
Actually... that would be like a really fat pencil... still not a bad way to carry 60gb.
Christian @ Dec 10th 2007 7:35PM
Someone has got to show some links as how to get one. I actually like to have one!
Jeremy Newton @ Dec 10th 2007 7:51PM
I want this so much.
Noc @ Dec 10th 2007 8:40PM
this looks awesome, totally want one. just in time for the holidays.
you can never go wrong with storage as a present, especially portable storage
anyone know how to get one?
Peter @ Dec 10th 2007 8:41PM
Sure it's small, but for an external drive 60 Gigs is pretty skimpy these days.
jP @ Dec 10th 2007 8:47PM
They look pretty stylish.
kimatg @ Dec 10th 2007 9:09PM
wow. and I thought my 1mm thick 80gb hdd was slim. :)
now, just wondering how durable is the tomato?
better not drop it... would it splatter?! :)
the_fozz @ Dec 11th 2007 12:16AM
would be a decent companion to an eee, IMO. Sure, it's not solid-state, but it's tiny and affordable. Tiny hd for tiny pc.
SF Master @ Dec 10th 2007 10:53PM
Some more pretty pictures at below link.

Now someone please take one of these and slap Jobs upside the damn head with it. HD based iPod touch asshole. >:x(
ZeroCorpse @ Dec 10th 2007 11:49PM
Useless as a hard drive. Too small these days!!! I'm not even happy with the 120GB in my MacBook, and I was feeling cramped with a 320GB external drive.
Put it in a PMP and we'll talk. Stick it in the iPod touch, and we're in business.
I wouldn't bother with a portable drive under 100GB, though. Not at the price of bigger ones, these days.
Zak @ Dec 11th 2007 12:22PM
I don't agree that 60 GB is useless as a HD. I would load Leopard and some disk utilities like DiskWarrior on it, use it as a medic disk. And that would leave plenty of room for transferring things like iMovie or Logic Express projects to my friend's house for collaboration.
kimatg @ Dec 11th 2007 7:39PM
For a HDD that small, I think 60GB is enough...
...unless you are a media freak.
Abscissa @ Dec 10th 2007 11:51PM
Not interested. TOO thin. I'd be worried about snapping it.
Duane Young @ Dec 11th 2007 12:02AM
Question: Who can direct us yanks to a site where we can order one?
bob @ Dec 11th 2007 1:40AM
Meh, I think this is a test for Hitachi's new HD technology they announced a while ago. They said they found a way to said the found a way to stack data on its side instead of flat, so they can be much more dense. See, what we use in the conventionary HD is like floor tiles, they are all layed out flat next to each other. Wouldn't it be WAY more effiveint to put them side to side like books on a shelf? And thats why you can get these smaller, higher capacity HDs. Hitachi said they wanted until early second quarter to test it out, they dont want the genius idea to go to hell just like solar cells because of a few bugs/crashes. They said they were going to release a 500 GB the size of a domino then, and the TB at that size n late 08, early 09. So manybe they got these guys cheap early versions to test out en masse. Eh?
what_the_hades @ Dec 11th 2007 8:43AM
Does anyone know if a harddrive like this can be powered by an aftermarket head unit for a car? This could be a cheaper alternative than buying a harddrive based mp3 player.
neworleansissinking @ Dec 11th 2007 12:43PM
Bob:
Communist, not socialist. If there's one thing that socialists hate, it's when people confuse the two.
Ayle @ Dec 11th 2007 4:51PM
My guess is no since the zvm use pata, and this probably use sata like most of the new external hdd...
