Magellan Maestro 3100 hacked to add file manager / media player
Although we've already seen Garmin's c510 / c530 get hacked up earlier this year, now it's time for Magellan's Maestro 3100 to head under the knife. The engineering David Goeken managed to personalize his unit with a custom splash screen, a beefed up POI file, a file manager for adding / sorting through applications and a full-fledged media player for good measure. Granted, there's a laundry list of known issues to go along with it, but hey, what fun is a hack without a little troubleshooting? Before hitting the read link and rolling up your sleeves, you may want to grab a meal and a few hours of rest -- you'll need the energy just reading through the how-to guide.

Magellan today release details about the upcoming Maestro 3100. Similar to the 4000 series, the new 3000 series features a slim profile not found on the other Magellan lines. In contrast to the 4 inch screens on the 4000 series, the 3000 series features a standard 3.5 inch display. Expect to shell out about $299 for this device which comes with maps of the 48 contiguous US states. It also comes with a SiRFstarIII chipset and many of the other common Magellan features such as their detour features and quickspell. Magellan Maestro 3100 (http://www.highspeedsat.com/maestro3100.htm device doesn’t come with the AAA features, for that you would need to upgrade to at least the 3140. You should be able to get your hands on one this month. The battery is expected to last about 3 hours and there is a minimal of 750,000 POIs installed.
now, if someone would just do this for the Bose Nav system in my Nissan, I'd be good to go!
It's depressing seeing the DVD logo on my system without the ability to actually play DVD's... DOH!
Uhm, does anyone care?
If they have one of these units & would like to expand on its functions, then Yes they would care.
Yes, I care very much actually. This is freakin' awesome. I recently bought one of these for cheap, and the included POI list is pretty weak.
Yes, I care. I own a 3100.
Works on my Roadmate 1200. Very cool.
I want to add that the Magellan 3100 is in need of more functionality. With only 750,000 POIs, I need the ability to add more POIs.
Why did I buy it? It was on sale. Besides that little flaw about POIs, I love it!
I took several pics and uploaded them here. Sorry you'll have to register to view them..
