NVIDIA reveals GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB
Not even two months after NVIDIA tempted gamers on a budget with the GeForce 8800 GT, the outfit has loosed a new beast just in time for those eleventh hour holiday shoppers. Based on 65-nanometer fabrication, the 8800 GTS 512MB boasts 128 stream processors, twin dual-link DVI ports, PureVideo HD technology, DirectX 10 support, a 650MHz core clock / 970MHz memory clock and hardware decode acceleration for smooth playback of "H.264, VC-1, WMV and MPEG-2 HD and SD movies." According to the company, this card provides some 25-percent more processing power than NVIDIA products previously offered at the same price point, which, if you're wondering, is around $299 to $349.

Im looking also for new extream graphics card but all this lingo goes straight through me, wat card would you go for or wait for and why!?
Please help people
Ananad has a nice review up already. Runs with an Ultra at lower res's but the 8800GT 512 stays pretty close at higher res's so it looks like the 8800GT 512 is still the best choice.
I'd have my 8800GT over this, similar performance, cheaper and single slot? It's a no brainer, for me at least.
No doubt. I'm glad I got the GT and didn't wait for this revamped GTS.
Only here you have better and more quiet cooling which is the 8800GT's biggest problem :)
@ DjurS - quieter than the FANLESS Sparkle 8800 GT?
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3165
It's silent yes.. and you can heat your house with that 111ºC beast.
Anyone know if this card sports the NVIO2 chip? I was massively disappointed when I found out that my 8800 GTX does not support HD-DVD/BluRay movies @ 1080(i/p) on dual-link monitors, yet the cheaper 8600 GTS and ATI cards have no trouble with playback.
I hate how all these cards claim HDCP compatibility yet you have to rely on review sites to see whether or not a certain set up will work.
Not sure about the naming you listed, but the 8800 GTS 512MB does have the newer NVIDIA VP2 in it that supports HD decodes like you are asking.

this all sounds pretty dorky
And that's why most of us are here - to read new, dorky information.
Attention nerds: Unite against the forces that would repress us! Get Bob!
Does it?
Do you like sports? I do, and i go to websites like http://www.nfl.com for news.
Do you like cars? I do, and i go to http://autoblog.com and http://www.clubsi.com for car news.
If this isn't your cup of tea, then go f*ck off somewhere else.
why do you all get so mad, cant you take a joke??? i like these things! these graphic cards are just a little too nerdy!
this is so funny.... "If this isn't your cup of tea, then go f*ck off somewhere else."
maybe you should get this graphics card and go play some video games for a while and calm down?!?! i beg you!
I can take a joke if they are funny. What you said was more of a statement, and caused the backlash you read.
im just trying to keep us all honest!
I don't know if the name of the site gives you any clues? engadget? gadget? gadgets? electrical components and bleeding edge technology! You following yet? No? Well bugger off then!
RE the card: no DX 10.1 support?
Honest? Honest about what? What, talking about horsepower, torque, wheel size, or MPG is not dorky? Why, cause more ppl drive cars than use video cards? U're not making sense. The show specs of a product, for people who are interested in this product. It's not any more dorky than talking about specs of other products.
And by saying "maybe you should get this graphics card and go play some video games for a while and calm down?!?! i beg you!" you just showed that you weren't just joking, but that apparently you have some problem with people who play video games. Yet, you post on websites like this...ehhh, some people...
i like video games tooo, im sorry, i take it all back, will you all forgive me.
I guess if you were really trying to make a joke, we might. Things can get easily misinterpreted online, especially when not written clearly. So formulate your joke in a better manner next time.
Now go play a game.
lol worst comment ever, on a tech site.
I forgive you, Bob.
Unless you are the evil Bob from Heroes, in which case I renew the case for all nerds to attack you!
Wait - so graphics cards that allow you to build bad-ass systems capable of eating little children are dorky, but the other stuff Engadget covers (that you haven't complained about) like wireless spectrums isn't? Huh?
When, oh when will one of these cards work on my Mac Pro?!? That ATI X1900 is a little bit old now.
Cant you use it now? You just need to install an OS that can actually use it.
Linux is your only hope.
And if that's a PPC machine, you're gonna have to use nouveau, and it's not where it needs to be yet. You'd be better off with a card with open specs, and as of now, that means ATi.
Anyone know if this is faster than the 8800GTX? Although if the trend so far is any indication, we'll be seeing a 65nm beefed up 8800gtx sometime soon... I can dream at least x)
No, you will see a 9 series before you see a GTX refresh. Nvidia ignored the mid-range market and has completely taken that with this recent round of releases. They are making up for it by releasing these.
I imagine this will probably be on par with the GTX, because of the 256-bit memory interface (384 GTX), but the more efficient core and higher possible overclock. While overclocked, it will probably beat it easily.
I would get this if you are after a good card at this price range. If you want high end, wait until early next year for the 9 series, if it comes out.
Who the hell are you to judge what is "a little too nerdy"? What a pointless thing to say on a tech blog.
Wow Bob, you WEREN'T kidding. XD I always laugh when people posting on boards, think they aren't dorky. What happens is when its something beyond they're comprehension, it must not be cool. "I'm only dorky enough to understand blogs but tech specs, thems Genius stuff so tis dorky."
Budget? I must be really old school but I thought budget meant under $100. A "budget" card that costs as much if not more than a home console. Wow. This is why gamers are flocking away. I miss those great days with Duke Nukem multiplayer and Unreal Tournament *sigh.
BTW I'm aware of my typos in my previous post. I know the difference between they're and their but I'm on a Blackberry today so you'll forgive me.
Here here, and good luck finding even the lowest end GTS for anywhere near $299. Newegg has them currently listed for $359 to $389. Maybe since they thought they got away with all their excessive pricing on the 8800GT, they could follow suit with the GTS models.
Mark my words, price gouging will kill PC gaming.
Is it really price gouging, Nate? I don't know enough about the business to know if it is or isn't. Anyone know what the margin on these things is, figuring in R&D and all that? I'm curious.
Well, I watched Newegg's stock on EVGAs 8800GT SSC go from it's original MSRP price of $279, to $299, to $319 and to where the price it's currently at $329... all within about a week and a half time. I've also SEEN comments on Newegg's site speaking out against price changing getting deleted by mods. ATi's HD3870 debuted on their site for $219 and are now at $249. I remember this exact same thing happening when Intel's Conroe chips hit the market. One would imagine that the MSRP prices set by chip manufactures included R&D cost.
My guess is that they're trying to cash in on the holiday fever because of the limited stock. It sucks if you're a gamer like me and you want to get a descent card for your money. The way it looks with the GTS models is that they're completely skipping the MSRP listing and opting to list higher prices from the get go.
@Nate
Newegg uses an automatic price algorithm. It sees how popular a product is and increases the price accordingly.
In some tests they proved to be a tad faster than GTX, but in generall it's slower.
No 10.1 support.
I still think GT is a better choice, GTS seems to gain just a fe FPS in most games an costs a lot more.
Apparently GeForce 9 is supposed to come out in Feb.

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_8800_gts_512mb/
Okay, I don't get the dorky remark. The article lists the tech specs of the card, which is what I'd find on the side of the retail packaging, the Newegg page, NVIDIA's site, etc....
Now, if I could dump out my spare parts tubs, grab my soldering pen, and create this card from the ground up out of loose parts, bits of wire, bubble gum, and little pieces of paper (Brak FTW), THEN I would be treading mighty heavily on the land of the dork.

I can't wait to see cuda functionality added to nouveau and various Free Software. You know, stuff like yafray and dirac decoders and whatnot.
...not much of a gamer-- on a Radeon 9200SE PCI 128MB now, and I probably will be until I can get a stream coprocessor, build a rig around it, install a distro designed for intensive use of stream coprocessing, and take advantage of all its power right off the bat.
hey everyone, i was just wondering if this is a great card to start out with as i havnt really bought any "extreme" graphics cards before and im thinking i should try this one out.
Anyone know of any desktops that will have this in them? I want one for christmas.
Just build your own?
I think the key benefit to this card is faster-than-GT performance (perhaps not always notable), while operating notably cooler and quieter than the 8800GT. Single slot is meaningless to me given the way my motherboard is laid out. I'd much rather have a quiet and cool-running solution (which is why I waited for the G92 8800GTS 512MB
I want to replace my 8800GTS 320MB with this card! But I guess I'll wait for the nVIDIA DX10.1 D8E Series in February.
Oof... I just stepped up via EVGA from a 8800GTS 320Mb to the new 8800GT 512Mb (single slot) card... should get here tomorrow. Kinda like the look of the double slot card in my new build, but seriously is the only real advantage the cooling? Seems like based on initial comparisons between the 8800GTS and 8800GT that making the new doublewide card should really trump the 8800GT, but I'm not seeing that yet.
man, 2 weeks after i buy a couple of 8800 GTS 320MB superclocked from evga for an SLI setup they start releasing sh*t like the GT and this news GTS.
annoying!!
Hi can anyone please tell me wich card is better. XFX GeForce 8800GTS 320MB DDR3 - STD EDITION - (DVI+TV+DVI) PC ............... OR ............... This new 8800GT 512mb ?
The new 8800GT 512MB.
