Sleep.FM brings social networking to the alarm clock -- forgets to ask why?
Unless you're waking to a playlist, you're likely subjecting yourself to a constant AM rehash of the same alarm drudgery. The kind of fitful start which makes any netizen long for the gray and death-accented cubicle release of work. Enter Sleep.FM, "the social alarm clock." The beta service allows your friends and family to record custom audio alarms which playback on your PC or other Internet enabled device. "Honey I've left, and I took the kids," has never been so arousing. Tear-jerker of a demonstration after the break.

"Arousing"? That's just plain wrong!
snang @ Dec 12th 2007 3:48PM
Dumb.

Wish this was a public company so I could short the stock. Would this be a part of bubble 3.0? I'm losing trak over here...
roflercosterer @ Dec 12th 2007 4:40AM
Or maybe Engadget forgets to ask "Why not?".

"The kind of fitful start which makes any netizen long for the gray and death-accented cubicle release of work."
Holy crap, that's a great sentence! Whatever Engadget is paying Thomas Ricker, it isn't enough.
Jonathan @ Dec 12th 2007 5:54AM
Hardly. He doesn't seem to know the first thing about tense consistency.
"Honey I've left, and I took the kids" ==> "Honey I've left, and I've taken the kids"
(Don't take me too seriously) :)

Hip Hip (...)
(..wait for it...)
Hoooray!

It's perhaps poetic in nature, but I heartily disagree with the content. I've never had such a bad morning that I actually wanted to be ensconced in my cubicle (which happens to be a disgusting beige-pink). And "release of work"? In a cubicle? Maybe it you happen to LOVE your job.
Overall the whole sentiment seems to be misplaced. But "gray and death-accented" is nice phrasing (the only salvageable part, unless you're easily seduced by words like 'fitful'.)
(No offense to the author, I just disagree with the gushing.)

The best part is how he kills the message never having really watched it through.
Jonathan @ Dec 12th 2007 5:43AM
I like the dead polar bear laying above the "eep" in "Sleep.FM" in the video.
Jonathan @ Dec 12th 2007 5:43AM
Should be a part of their main logo, too.

Yeah why not... the alarm clock has been sounding the same noise forever, why not mix the Internet and everything that is the web with it!
Reminds me of those people saying the Internet will prevade into our home appliances ... like the toilet, kitchen cabinets and well now the alarm clock!
Dave @ Dec 12th 2007 7:25AM
Nope... no way... uh uh. Sorry... No offense to any of the people used in that clip (especially the soldier whom I thank for his service) but that thing is total crap! Alarm Clock 2 FTW!!! http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28932
I'll never wake up to a regular alarm clock again!
Daniel @ Dec 12th 2007 2:56PM
I think this is an even better alarm clock.

It kind of sounds like they are trying to seduce people. "Sleep With Us......"
lol.
JDigital @ Dec 12th 2007 10:02AM
Can't wait until they start playing subliminal advertising while you sleep...
kevjohn @ Dec 12th 2007 9:47AM
This will make being a gigolo much less stressful. No more awkward morning goodbyes with last night's conquest. Just leave one of these with a message along the lines of: "Last night was OK/good/great, you were there/trying/wonderful. I hope you didn't mind sleeping in the wet spot. Thanks again. Later."
jabberwonk @ Dec 15th 2007 6:35PM
That's a great idea, but I don't like that it's tied to a PC. I'd rather see some kind of device that could play audio sent to it from the Internet (you control the buddylist), but plays other alarm sounds or music from an iPod or other external source.
DonatoM3 @ Dec 12th 2007 11:23AM
So when we want to play a prank on all of our friends at once all we gotta do is leave a blank message now and watch them all be late for work?
oshean @ Dec 12th 2007 11:48AM
space bar = snooze button?

适合忘记关电脑的使用!
Ecological @ Jan 18th 2008 4:02PM
You can already do this with your Nabaztag (your friends can leave vocal messages to it) and it can be used as an alarm clock, and you don't need to have your computer on which really isn't good for the energy saving efforts the world has to make, a computer is very energy consuming even in sleep mode. Another problem is you need to set up your computer to not fall into sleep mode...
johnnyblazer @ Jan 21st 2008 11:19PM
I have a Nabaztag and when my friends leave a message it is the rabbit talking only. I don't hear their actual voice message or them talking about a new song, then hearing that song afterwards. Maybe Im missing something?
I agree about the ecology and having to keep your computer on, but I looked on this Sleep companies blog and see they making it available on mobile devices and alarm clocks.
They should work with this rabbit thing!
