Forgetting about the power saving benefits the real benefit is that when upgrading your card you can leapfrog without having to chuck the previous card. One of the selling points for SLI and Crossfire is that instead of getting an expensive new card you can theoretically just pop a second card in once they go down in price, but in real life by the time the second card drops in price there's a new card that tends to be more powerful than the two old cards combined, so you might as well just get the newer card. With this system you can just keep getting midrange cards and keep the last generation card as well for that little extra performance boost. This is very economical and if ATI can start being competitive in REAL world prices not just MSRP then I'd be sold.
