AMD just took the wraps off their ATI R680, RV620, and RV635 graphics cores. The new R680 consists of two 55-nm processor cores with CrossFireX support sharing the same specifications of the RV670 processor at the heart of their
Radeon HD 3870 -- thought to be AMD's best product of the year. The RV620 and RV635 GPU cores are nearly identical to their RV610 and RV630 processors only in a new 55-nm form. Now, imagine if you will a pair of ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 (R680) cards running in CrossFire. Or say
four with CrossFireX. Feels good, right? You won't have to wait much longer as the R680 hits in January.

I have a 2900xt and a 3870 in crossfire. Runs everything amazing. Better than my friends Intel Quad and dual 8800Ultras
Paul @ Dec 14th 2007 8:43AM
Well, you must have gotten some crazy good cards because all the reviews say the exact opposite.
Dustin Frazier @ Dec 14th 2007 10:34AM
Liar, either you or your friend.

"Or say four with CrossFireX."
Um, the pic only shows one CrossFire Bridge which probably means you'll be able to run two cards, max. This is also mentioned in the article. Still nice though - it'll mean that more people can squeeze 4 GPUs in to their rig without buying a new mobo with 4 PCIe slots.
DirtyC @ Dec 14th 2007 8:01AM
it does support 4 graphics card in some sort of úber crossfire setup, just not in that pic...Im not aware of any mobo's out there with 4pci-e slots, but crossfireX's release means some will not be far behind.
WhyFi @ Dec 14th 2007 10:10AM
The single GPU 3850 and 3870, yeah, but not the dual GPU 3870 X2 - it only has one CrossFire bridge, not the two bridges necessary for CrossFireX, unless they're going backwards in time to their external dongle...
CosterMonger @ Dec 14th 2007 12:13PM
@DirtyC
a couple AM2+ Boards with CrossfireX:
Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DQ
Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe
(they can only support four in 8X{each} though)
(or one in 16X and two in 8X {I think for just the ASUS though I'm not sure})
(or just two in 16X)
to bad the Phenom isn't up to snuff... here's hoping for a Athlon 7000+ X2 {stranger things have happened} :)
Ivan @ Dec 14th 2007 9:27AM
does anyone know if you can put this in crossfire with a regular 3870?
SpankMe @ Dec 14th 2007 9:46AM
Yikes, typo within the first four words??

dkffiv @ Dec 14th 2007 10:14AM
Wait, I thought nVidia bought 3DFX.
Seriously, that looks exactly like my Voodoo5 5500.
2 GPUs? Check.
Super long card? Check.
Lack of financial security? Check.
cherie22984 @ Dec 14th 2007 10:30AM
looks good, but what bout the drivers?
boe @ Dec 14th 2007 7:42PM
Anyone seen any game benchmarks for this card yet? I know there are some 3d benchmarks but I'm curious how it competes with the 8800 under real game apps.
Thanks
Josh @ Dec 14th 2007 8:28PM
exactly. I wish they'd simply work on actually supporting the cards they already have out. AMD's site doesn't even have drivers available for my card under Vista.

Four cards in tandem? Four, then five, then eight, then sixteen. Why wait for that? They should just go straight to figuring out how to get like, 40 of these suckers working in tandem. One for each tiny section of the screen.
That, coupled with a terabyte of RAM, a dozen cell processors, and the Battleship Mtron. That should give us a decent portion of what we need to get some good gaming performance. Seems to be where everything is headed. Then you can mortgage your home and run the AC in the winter. But hey, at least gaming will be kick ass.
Sound good? Yeah, let's go with that.
