Korean researchers show off "Securo" security robot
It looks like the international fraternity of security robots could soon be about to welcome a new member, as a team of researchers from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology recently announced that its "Securo" bot has passed a test that had it navigating a one kilometer long course by all by itself. That was apparently done with the aid of its built-in GPS and a laser image scanner, which allowed it to motor along at a speed of 5.4 km/h while avoiding obstacles and staying within an error range of 10 cm. That, the researchers say, could also make it suitable for delivering military supplies or performing surveillance, although there's no indication just yet as to when it might actually see service.

For a security robot, this thing looks as intimidating as a puppy.

We agree that this configuration is not meant for the field. We'll be singing a different tune when they start showing up crowbar and 50 Cal. round proof. What will we do then? Ban 'em, I imagine. We'd want to attack when their power supplies are at their lowest...pass the word.

Bet that thing would be worth a lot - throw one of those foil survival blankets over it, tie it up, carry it away!

There's nothing more intimidating than a laptop with wheels!

I love those kinds of things. Remembers me of when I sat building Lego-robots. Maybe time to see if I can find the RCX and all those parts again, somewhere in the deeps of what now is my younger brothers Legos.

We need one of these in our office to stop all the laptops from being stolen...

How secure can it be with an open laptop on the top? Maybe it has really strong password protection.

Please put down your weapon. You have 20 seconds to comply.

@bharatk12
you have no idea what your talking about.
Let me throw you this info,
the lead scientist(whom you accuse of just scamming) of stem cell research in korea donated all of his share of stem cell patent to the government.
Now, what benefit does that guy get from scamming?
KC @ Dec 16th 2007 1:26AM
Some security robot. Just wait until it rains...
Karl Viklund @ Dec 16th 2007 12:24PM
Wow. Is that some kind of joke?
People will just go up to it and kick it over :)
Michal G @ Dec 16th 2007 11:30PM
Yeah, in 2-3 years this thing with be bullet proof, tamper proof and have like 2x machine guns and running at 100km/h.. When are you going to run up to it and kick it over? Be lucky to get within 20 feet of it.
