Wooden SNES portable is the greatest thing ever devised by man
Watch out Ben Heck, there's a new console modder in town, and this here wooden portable SNES is making you look bad. There's really not much else to say about this unit other than our standard dose of fanboyishness. The thing was built out of a standard Super Nintendo, an LED-backlit PSONe display and a whole bunch of love -- that wooden case is all custom. Suffice it to say: we want. Video of it in action after the break.

Idiots.

His comment says something we can all agree with.

agreed

Thirded.

They should have a duel of the modders!
Right, the first one to make a portable ps3 small enough to fit inside my left nostril wins!
Carbonize @ Dec 15th 2007 7:19PM
How about just the first to make the PS3 less ugly?
Tiptup300 @ Dec 15th 2007 8:26PM
Or a PS3 that actually makes money!
computer.dude.28 @ Dec 15th 2007 8:26PM
How about the first to make the PS3 a working Barbeque?
mushrooshi @ Dec 15th 2007 9:12PM
Comptuerdude...
It has already been done.
Stephen @ Dec 15th 2007 10:50PM
I want a Gamecube player that fits in my back pocket and connects wirelessly to a retinal projection system in my eyeglasses. For sound, the earpieces of my eyeglasses could have small speakers.
Controller would have to be small, too, and split into separate hand-pieces - also wireless.
Ah, yes, that would be good!
Josh @ Dec 15th 2007 10:55PM
Never understood why they used a PS3 for a BBQ, seems like the xbox would be a bit easier to do it with considering it is one anyways...
captainawesome @ Dec 16th 2007 12:35AM
Make an Xbox 360 that will never overheat.
Carbonize @ Dec 16th 2007 1:31AM
Because the PS3 case is curved like a barbecue. And someone has made a 360 that doesn't overheat and I own it :D. Wonder how long till someone tries to put a 360 and PS3 into the same shell sharing the blu-ray drive with a switch to select between them.
Nick @ Dec 16th 2007 4:48AM
@Carbonize
Dude.. Microsoft and Sony working together..?
..
No..
Kevin @ Dec 16th 2007 8:18AM
As far as making the PS3 less ugly, I left it inside the box. Poked holes in the back for cables, ventilation, etc.

If I just ram a normal-sized PS3 up your left nostril and manage to get it to fit, do I win?
Carbonize @ Dec 15th 2007 7:18PM
Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
James Ollier @ Dec 15th 2007 7:18PM
I think Paul Miller takes the wheel for granted
Derek @ Dec 15th 2007 7:23PM
Making him look bad? I don't know about that. Don't you think that's pretty harsh?
James Ollier @ Dec 15th 2007 7:27PM
Anyway, screw this kindof old skool!
Old skool mods should be new technology in old casing eg a Wii in a NES, or a Mac Mini in an Apple II
PSP and SNES9x = Cheaper, less effort, lighter, smaller, sleeker, more battery efficient, higher resolution and brighter SNES games.
And you won't get beat up on the tube..
James Ollier @ Dec 15th 2007 7:59PM
You sound like a nice, intelligent guy.
How are your stocks in Northern Rock doing?
Tavis Veighey @ Dec 15th 2007 8:32PM
Any moron can fit the Wii into an NES case! There will even be room to spare!
You obviously do not understand the ammount of skill needed to not only make the wooden case, but to cut a controller in half, re-arrange all the internal coponents so that they fit in a smaller formfactor, AND still function!
So get back to us when you actually make a mod that you think is cool.
mushrooshi @ Dec 15th 2007 9:14PM
Tavis-
It is actually pretty easy to make the controller. I've done it many times with just a soldering iron, some buttons, and an old used controller. I do it on DDR pads.
But yea, the mod is totally cool.
MikeG @ Dec 16th 2007 2:07PM

What is it with PSOne screens? Are they cheap or just easy to hack? Or is it just that they happen to be the perfect size for this kind of thing?
atomicthumbs @ Dec 15th 2007 8:05PM
All 3.
Crazylink @ Dec 15th 2007 8:08PM
I call shenanigans. No SNES game can star with out being blown on.
Chris @ Dec 16th 2007 3:15AM
All of mine can. Probably because I never, ever blew on them, because the moisture in your breath collects on the contacts and eventually corrodes them.
Also why all my NES games ALSO still work without many troubles. The loading mechanism, however, is a little finicky in it's old age, the game has to be inserted at exactly the correct depth or it gets garbled. But I know what this depth is by now so it's a non-issue.
Hollywood Ron @ Dec 15th 2007 8:29PM
You know, your Uncle Marcellus could provide you with a whole wooden entertainment system. I'm an oak man myself, Jimmy. You like oak?
Brendon @ Dec 15th 2007 8:47PM
Using a knob to power it up is by far the most tubular feature!
Andrew Chung @ Dec 15th 2007 9:47PM
Whatever those buttons are underneath the face buttons (start/select, probably?), they seem to be fairly inconveniently placed.
Stephen @ Dec 15th 2007 10:32PM
Left is volume control, right is start/select. And those don't really need to be close at hand except for Konami games...up up down down left right left right b a start, anyone?
I wonder if he included a headphones jack. I mean, even if he didn't, he wired the sound himself. This guy's done his homework!
Stephen @ Dec 15th 2007 10:41PM
I just noticed...are there shoulder L/R buttons? I would be seriously handicapped in my MarioKart exploits if I were denied the use of the jump/slide!
4honor @ Dec 15th 2007 10:04PM
Wow, I didn't know the original Star Fox had basically the same graphics as the 64 version... I wonder if they are going to make one for the Wii...
Crazylink @ Dec 15th 2007 10:34PM
Unless you're just trolling, You could see quite a big difference between them if it was closer to the camera.
tekdroid @ Dec 15th 2007 10:58PM
superb, but ergonomics (shape) of wooden case severely lacking long-term playability without pain, IMO.
If the 'wings' were thinned out and made rounded on the edges, we'd have a far more comfortable gaming session.
Jeff Jimison @ Dec 16th 2007 12:04AM
Back in MY day, we didn't have wood.
pilot101 @ Dec 16th 2007 12:40AM
man that shiet is work of art ^^, I wouldn't mind having those around just to have it around. I wonder how good the battery life is. I'm going on an oversea trip, it would be tite to bust that thing out in the plane. Hopefully, i won't get tackled down by security thinking its somekind bomb T_T.
Robert D. S. @ Dec 16th 2007 1:02AM
This is a great modification of an existing system. You should be very proud of your creativity (whoever created this very nice piece of work!). I thought I had seen everything, but there is always a new twist to an old
system.!
Podaman @ Dec 16th 2007 1:07AM
You can always pick the video game loners out (as apposed to the social ones?) by asking them to recite the Konami code:
If it ends with "START" and not "SELECT START"
...you know they played alone. ;)
I kid, i
