Ohayo's MP4 Player is ugly
No way around it, Ohayo's "design" on this here DAP is just plain criminal. If the hardware weren't slab-a-rific enough, the software interface manages to look cluttered and yet uninviting. 2GB of flash storage and a 1.8-inch OLED screen have never been put to less appealing use. Other than that we're total fans.

^^ Haha. I immediately thought of that song, too. :D
euclid @ Dec 16th 2007 9:12AM
why bother posting shit about crappy DAPs of no consequence and calling them ugly? You guys keep doing it all week long.
Its no like you're reporting about the ugliness of some player by a known manufacturer. These generic players made by random companies don't need to be mentioned/reviews. No one cares.
Zoli Honig @ Dec 16th 2007 9:35AM
I couldn't have said it better myself.
macmike47 @ Dec 16th 2007 9:43AM
Oh lighten up guys. You gotta find it funny...
shamrock593 @ Dec 16th 2007 10:08AM
I found it entertaining..but then again I'm easily amused. =)
Mikewpbf @ Dec 16th 2007 10:35AM
Here Here.. Right on brother.
They just keep posting this crap because aol payroll now. Old engadget was the best.
Now they count on the pages views and comments (like this one).
FK @ Dec 16th 2007 11:20AM
It's a blog. Lighten up.
Jeff @ Dec 16th 2007 12:31PM
Mikewpbf:
So, what, you're talking about that like, four month period from when Engadget was founded to when Weblogs, Inc. was bought by AOL? Because that's about how long the pre-AOL Engadget existed.
Scooter @ Dec 16th 2007 4:42PM
I agree. Paul needs a bit of Christmas cheer. Lighten up fella!
Zaber @ Dec 16th 2007 9:28AM
We got lots of things like this in Taiwan.
BCTI @ Dec 16th 2007 9:44AM
I've actually bought some of the things you have given horrible reviews to. They wave outlasted the gear I paid 5 times more for. I don't care what a product looks like mostly. I care if it's going to survive the year in my backpack. I care about how long it lasts me on a long trip. You don't mention that. You are so concerned with looks that you miss out on decent quality product. And heres a thought for you. Why don't you take the time to show us what you like. It's easy yo rip something apaprt. Why don't you take your pasty ass out and actually find a decent product to review. Oh wait. maybe we should just look at what every little geek clone is using.
Some people buy these things because it is right for them. Some people actually have taken the to to lay hands on product. They don't just scroll through the chinavision or global sources site and pick stuff to rip on.
Derek @ Dec 16th 2007 10:27AM
Bullshit.
shamrock593 @ Dec 16th 2007 10:32AM
I've used Chinese players like these before - they are a heap of crap. Before you tell me that they have more features than an iPod/Zune etc, trust me the build quality is so crap, the OS is completely useless and the last a few months.
Not worth it..
Ignacio @ Dec 16th 2007 10:51AM
Obviously each person has their own opinion, personally I share this point of view:
“Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like,” says Steve Jobs, Apple’s C.E.O. “People think it’s this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”"
Luke @ Dec 16th 2007 12:26PM
Ugh, let's NOT beat around the bush on this one.
Superficial society = Products MUST look good.
People whi carry them round in bags and whatever are a MINORITY. The MAJORITY of people carry them around in their hands, like to flaunt them, take them out and whatever. People DON'T want to look like they've bought something cheap and nasty, hence the need for a decent external design. The UI on this... horrific. WHy has Apple sold so many iPhones within such a short space of time... the hype for one, but the UI is TOP notch. Just an example of the need of good design.
People who don't acknowledge this are idiots.
BCTI @ Dec 16th 2007 1:26PM
Hpye...
PT Barnum was spot on when he said a sucker is born every day. Not everyone is materialistic and vain. They are the minority. The main reason so many of apple's products have sold is not popularity. The reason is restrictive marketing agreements. As far as calling me an idiot, you don't even know me. Many of the products you call ugly are made by the same factories that make you so called great products. On the SAME EXACT LINES!
They use the same parts. They have the same quality control. The best mp3 player I own is a 30 dollar unit I bought used 4 years ago. I have dropped it in the water, and even dropped it off a building. I have a zune that is a paperweght from the restrictive manner in which it is programmed. I had an ipod but I gave it away because I couldn't change the battery. Most people change their music often and dont use 40 gigs.
If I can get the features I want out of a 50 dollar player why not buy it. Or should I be a good little robot and spend 250 on a device that will be obsolete next year. A vast majority of people don't have the money to throw away like that. I have to save my money to buy even the 50 dollar item. I don't have the luxury of tossing away money like that. I'm sure in whatever fantasy world you live in, that isn't an issue. But in the real world, mountains of credit card debt from having the flashiest toy on the block isn't what matters. I'll save my money for thangs that really matter. Paying rent, and eating are high on my personal list.
Mark Richardson @ Dec 17th 2007 1:44AM
"They wave outlasted the gear"
LMAO
I think you mean "They WAY outlasted the gear", kiddo.
That grammatical misconception was so funny that I'm not even going to bother responding to the rest of your bloviating.
Derek @ Dec 16th 2007 10:33AM
I like how they just ripped Apple's ColorSync Utility icon (bottom right). And that's the SoundJam MP icon in the center.
Rob @ Dec 16th 2007 10:49AM
Ugly is an understatement.

sracer @ Dec 16th 2007 11:15AM
Instead of parading these cheap players around for geeks to gawk at like some deformed circus sideshow freak, why not provide a little insight into the device being shown? What are some of the good points... bad points. Why might someone want to consider it... or not.
These "oh look Martha, it's Jo-jo the web-toed duck boy!" type articles are getting a little stale IMO.
Trini_Man @ Dec 16th 2007 11:23AM
Very UGLY !!!
oliver @ Dec 16th 2007 11:31AM
What makes this one different is that it hasn't copied the iPod.
Anders @ Dec 17th 2007 1:15AM
...Because that TOTALLY doesn't resemble the Nano Fatty "interface/screen" layout...
Jerome @ Dec 16th 2007 11:47AM
well! They could sell it 49$!

Doesn't Ohayo mean good morning?
leo f @ Dec 16th 2007 2:31PM
yeah...it does, in japanese. either a humorous coincidence, or an interesting choice for a brand name coming from a chinese company. hahah.
Reader @ Dec 16th 2007 4:58PM
Well at least the manufacturers have a sense of irony, quite the sight to wake up to.

Davef01 @ Dec 16th 2007 4:16PM
ew. what a sad sight to see.
Wolfticket @ Dec 16th 2007 8:02PM
Meh, it looks ok.
Admittedly the photo is pretty dire (esp. the watermark), other than that it is a matte black rectangle with 4 buttons and a screen.
I reckon it's probably pretty small and slim (looking at the size of the screen and the solid state storage), OLED is nice, and as for the interface; well i'd have to USE it.
The first leaked shots of the 3gen nano we're beautiful of course...

Brad Bower @ Dec 17th 2007 2:29AM
Weird, it looks like they stole the Apple ColorSync utility icon right out of Mac OS.
Dan2 @ Dec 17th 2007 11:15AM
Why, oh why, oh why oh
Why would you ever buy Ohayo?
Rai @ Dec 17th 2007 2:53PM
Oo... i believe that icon to the far right is the colorsync icon in Mac OS X..... hmmm...
