Toshiba's Portege G910 / G920 go FCC: followup to the G900 superphone
Probably because it's not that big of a player in the domestic cellphone space, Toshiba may not be familiar with all the ins and outs of FCC confidentiality agreements, as evidenced by its testing subcontractor leaving tons of juicy photos of the unannounced Portege G910 / G920 smartphones in those devices' recently-declassified applications. Tosh's blunder clues us in to a whole world of info about this followup to the WVGA, Windows Mobile 6 Portege G900, such as the fact that it's eschewing its predecessor's sliding form factor for the clamshell-design of the Nokia E90 (perhaps an answer to the tilting screen of HTC's TyTN II?). While full specs aren't yet available, we've pieced together that these devices (differentiated by the fact that one of them will have a crippled GPS receiver) are tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 -- sorry, fellow Americans, no US broadband here -- with WiFi, Bluetooth, and dual cameras, and powered by a Qualcomm processor of unknown speed. Hit up the gallery below for a few more inelegant FCC glamour shots, including some dissection photos that may help our clever readers glean even more information...

Ewww...... could they make it any uglier?!
austin @ Dec 16th 2007 1:39PM
yeah, it could be a chinese pmp, then engadget would bash everything about it, including it being ugly
Ricardo @ Dec 16th 2007 6:54PM
Maybe it's just a prototype. But a very ugly one indeed...

what is with the 1 eyed sad face? camera?
Constable Odo @ Dec 16th 2007 12:27PM
What, no touchscreen? Must be last year's model. WinMo 6? I guess they might as well keep selling it overseas since it doesn't have a chance here.

I just still dont understand this ts mania. Symbian has what 60-70% of the market and it even dosent have ts sym for now at least. If ts phone makers wanna get there in the top they should get those tactile phones out. That said that looks ugly.

The outer appearance is so pre-2002.
Jah @ Dec 16th 2007 12:33PM
The 2 columns of touch sensitive icons reminds me of the Psion 5.

Genjinaro @ Dec 16th 2007 3:26PM
They should've looked at the I-Mate Ultimate 7150 before they designed this crap.
Well it had better be powerful (624mhz/128 RAM/8GB etc.) or else it'll flop.
Phoenix @ Dec 23rd 2007 9:00AM
Yeah... That I-Mate phone was canceled :P
San @ Dec 16th 2007 10:59PM
Dont tell me it doesnt flip around like the HTC Universal :(((
This is going to be plain stupid to constantly have to use the device in landscape mode :(
Cheers,
San

hard to tell, as at first glance it should be able to do so (screen do not go to low or anything like that) but at closer inspection it seems that the black area seen in the gallery shots goes into the screen area, thereby blocking any potential rotation hinge...

Hopefully it will be better than the G900. Even though it had some mouthwatering specs, it was slow as molasses, couldn't get a full GSM signal if you pressed it against a cellphone tower, and crashed all the time. Even if it works better, it still looks disgusting and hard to use as a phone (How do you dial?!?).
