Mobiblu unveils the Nanum folding cube DAP
Mobiblu sure loves the cubes, and the Korean company busted out its latest take on the concept today, the Nanum. The screenless unit actually unfolds to a cross shape, but still features 1GB of storage, USB 2.0 connectivity, Lego-esque pop-out buttons, dimensions of just 1.1 inches a side, and support for MP3, WMA, and WAV. No word on Stateside availability or pricing, but travelers to Korea can get their box on (but not the Boxon) in red, white, or light green. Check a few pics of the unit folded and unfolded in the gallery.

It says MP3, WMA, and WAV...
Tommy @ Dec 17th 2007 1:53PM
Is this really new stuff? I've had the 1GB MP3 player (With Screen) for over 2 years...
SteveMB @ Dec 17th 2007 6:12PM
I am pretty sure yours is different. Yours doesn't unfold.
matt @ Dec 17th 2007 1:57PM
i dont see the point in these things, nobody wants something this shape in their pocket.if youve got tight pants then fall on it, thats just going to hurt.
Tommy @ Dec 17th 2007 2:05PM
I agree with your point. It is a fairly odd shape to put in a pocket. I bought one because it was the smallest 1GB player on the market at the time (before Ipod Nano), and the included lanyard headphones makes it very easy to wear. I've used it several times on planes and other trips and its very easy to keep up with when its around your neck.

Agreed also...

"cross shape" . . .
So will the Fundies buy one just because it's a cross? "What would Jesus listen to?"
JosephMohmed @ Dec 17th 2007 2:28PM
Or it could be an upside-down cross, anti-Jesus.
Mike @ Dec 18th 2007 12:08PM
An upside-down Cross could be a symbol of St. Matthew (or was it St. Mark) who was crucified upside down.

now the question is why does it fold out? is that how you connect it the the computer or something?

When my then 8 year old daughter wanted a DAP I directed her to the cube.
She goes pocket-less many days so fitting there's not an issue. In fact, the cube-ness means that it is impossible to put enough torque on it to snap it. Only a hammer would crack it open :-) With the lanyard integrated earbuds and clear rubbery shock absorber wrapper, it has survived two years of abuse -- with only one replacement earbud set required.
Not the most intuitive interface on the version with the screen, but all she does is press 'play' anyway. I think this version would have been even better for her.

Personally I think it's kinda cool. Definitely not 'pocketable' though. LOL at the iPod dock in the photos, and oddly enough, I have two of the toys (not the cars) in the backgrounds of the photos.

Is it really supposed to unfold? Or are those just flat views?
computer.dude.28 @ Dec 17th 2007 5:16PM
I'm wondering that too.. but if it did unfold, I'd like to see how the headphone jack works!
Anthony @ Dec 17th 2007 3:28PM
quick - insert the allspark in my chest so that megatron will not be able to control it!
macona @ Dec 17th 2007 3:38PM
I can see how this works. The plug on an earphone is about 1/2" deep . So that means one piece is going to be at least 5/8" thick. I suppose the block that contains the earphone jack could also contain the circuitry and battery and then only flex circuits need to go to the buttons.
Notice on their site they have ipod phones hooked to them. I wonder if this player even exists.
Zarifus @ Dec 17th 2007 4:51PM
Make one that looks like a Weighted Companion Cube and I'd buy it :P
Etrigan @ Dec 17th 2007 5:08PM
HA! I like that idea. Just don't betray your cube and toss the little buddy in the incinerator.
Ellianth @ Dec 18th 2007 12:42AM
Just buy a weighted companion cube plushie, gut it, and stick this thing inside.
MoMan @ Dec 18th 2007 11:51PM
Hey, You can even put your weed in there!
Ellianth @ Dec 18th 2007 12:43AM
lol i saw that movie (again) the other night.
tamoghno @ Dec 18th 2007 3:16AM
so i have to "find" the controls when i need them ?
Will Sterling @ Dec 18th 2007 7:58PM
How is this company still in business?
I had the older Mobiblu cube I went through four of them before I got tired of returning the piece of junk for a replacement. Each new one would only work for a week before it would stop powering on or it's file system would become corrupt and eventually brick. The customer service sucked I had to escalate each ticket to a manager before they would send a new one out the whole process took about two months each time I sent on in for replacement.
