Cardboard case mod comes ready to ship
Calling that thing pictured above a "case mod" is a near travesty, but we're at a loss for words outside of that. This box is almost devoid of specifications entirely, but judging by the artwork on the "chassis," it's powered by a totally rare Intel Pentium 3 CPU, hums along on Ubuntu and features a curiously placed fan, audio in / out, VGA output, a power supply and lots of fasteners tape. Truth be told, we're not even certain this concoction is capable of processing anything, but at least it's primed for a shipping label should the creator opt to cut his / her losses.

Flashpoint @ Dec 20th 2007 11:49AM
But CAN IT PLAY DOOM?
melloncollie @ Dec 20th 2007 12:20PM
Please, that that doom "joke" die already.
It's no longer funny.
Andir3.0 @ Dec 20th 2007 1:20PM
"It's no longer funny."
... would imply that it was ever funny.
Bombaclaat @ Dec 20th 2007 1:52PM
but will it blend. :)
ScareyJ @ Dec 20th 2007 3:32PM
Are we sure this isn't the Postal Service's first implementation of the new GPS recording tool for tracking shipping performance and related metrics? The skull and bones are probably to draw attention from the really long extension cord so employees don't know its an internal device used to measure their performance (or to keep kids from eating the box, dunno).
JDizzle @ Dec 20th 2007 3:44PM
It's like running case less, but in a box...
teej @ Dec 21st 2007 10:55AM

Backlin @ Dec 20th 2007 11:48AM
I hope that thing has INSANE cooling abilities.
benjasmine @ Dec 21st 2007 9:23AM
i did something similar before...
mine was not in a box, so there is no heating problem, but dust problem... and people like to put their finger in the cooling fan.....
benjasmine @ Dec 21st 2007 9:27AM

L.Cyphre @ Dec 20th 2007 11:49AM
Pfft! I made a mod like this YEARS ago.
Just shows how SLOW you are again!
egotman @ Dec 21st 2007 8:59AM
Ah come on, you're just jealous you did not think to post to engadget first.
Flashpoint @ Dec 20th 2007 11:51AM
Theoretically, if you did have PC's like this with a monitor and wifi for homeless people, they could browse the net, learn and integrate themselves into society as PC technicians
THJ @ Dec 20th 2007 12:09PM
Geek Squad is hiring!
Technex @ Dec 20th 2007 1:42PM
Lol :).

"Theoretically, if you did have PC's like this with a monitor and wifi for homeless people, they could browse the net, learn and integrate themselves into society as PC technicians"
No need for that, they are rich enough to buy laptops

mike_p @ Dec 22nd 2007 2:14AM
We don't need anymore homeless PC technicians =P
JtmfT @ Dec 20th 2007 11:52AM

blade417 @ Dec 20th 2007 3:12PM

computer.dude.28 @ Dec 20th 2007 5:20PM
Can't you learn from Flashpoint's mistake(s)?
Gabriel @ Dec 20th 2007 11:55AM
Must be Al Gores new computer. Something a little more earth friendly, taking "green" to the extreme.
syadasti @ Dec 20th 2007 11:56AM
Totally owns the iMac
Flashpoint @ Dec 20th 2007 11:57AM
BUT...do you have to unbox it to set it up?
John Shillabeer @ Dec 20th 2007 12:01PM
No, you just have to re-box it.
blade417 @ Dec 20th 2007 3:20PM
will it void my warranty if I umm.. uhh..
does this have a warranty?
Warhorse @ Dec 20th 2007 11:59AM
Now is that the upgraded model? The fastening tape on my unit is blue.
Paper Tiger @ Dec 20th 2007 12:02PM
Nah, just standard DVD rather than Blu-ray like yours.
Josef @ Dec 20th 2007 12:06PM
Ouch.
Technex @ Dec 20th 2007 12:00PM
Ah at least the idiot techs can determine what part is which now ;).
Matt @ Dec 20th 2007 12:01PM
Yea, but does it run linu... wait, nevermind.
TomTom2007 @ Dec 20th 2007 12:06PM
Hope it doesn't burn the house down...
Ladderless @ Dec 20th 2007 12:06PM
This could be the start of the "One Desktop Per Child" program!
Ellianth @ Dec 20th 2007 12:19PM
Homeless people won't let it fly. The box industry is all the homeless folks have left.
Andrew @ Dec 20th 2007 12:06PM
i did that months ago
muddyh2o @ Dec 20th 2007 12:08PM
ah yes, the ghetto pc arrives just in time for Festivus
Andrew @ Dec 20th 2007 12:08PM
also, i set a bottle of cold water next to the fan to try to cool it down. it didn't really work though.
Flashpoint @ Dec 20th 2007 12:08PM
Actually, Cardboard box PC cases wouldn't be so bad. You could just go to walmart's back room and get enough boxes to make a PC tower with 10 drive bays and enough space for ANY Motherboard.
And Why stop there?
WORKGROUP SERVERS
SUPERCOMPUTERS
Your imagination is your only limitation.
Technex @ Dec 20th 2007 12:11PM
I don't think the insurance company would like that....
rv @ Dec 20th 2007 12:24PM
Who even needs cases? Real men leave their components out for all to see them.
paragraph @ Dec 20th 2007 12:11PM
... this is like the nth cardboard case mod i've seen, it's been done, it's cool (sorta... not really)... get over it...
slow news day, move along, nothing to see here.
blackfeather @ Dec 20th 2007 12:25PM
Trogdor!!!
I dig your consumate v's
Andir3.0 @ Dec 20th 2007 1:26PM
I really liked the pizza box server ideas of the past... they made sense for a stack of servers without a rack :P
Joe Maki @ Dec 20th 2007 12:19PM
This baby has a ton of expansion room. And that red duct tape is sick. Makes those blue LEDs and neon look so 90's. And cardboard is a great acoustic insulator, can you say "silent pc"! Not to mention the custom graphics. Sign me up for one of these!
kurwa23 @ Dec 20th 2007 12:21PM
Ah, guess somebody leaked Packard Bell's new product mock-up
blarvh @ Dec 20th 2007 1:54PM
Haha I like how everything BUT the picture is hidden when you report the post.
S&M @ Dec 20th 2007 12:26PM
But did it pass FCC and UL certifications?
Homeboy @ Dec 20th 2007 12:30PM
Looks very fire proof to me.
