iPod touch to iPod video UI hack attack
Got a 5 or 5.5G iPod video that you don't want to give up, but you do want to make look a little more like your pal's iPod touch? Well, good news for you comes by way of iPodHacking's new iPod touch to iPod video interface, which will help you stave off a painful, costly upgrade that much longer -- especially since hear it even makes your old iPod touchscreen capable. Psych.

Psych. True.
Ryan Trevisol @ Dec 20th 2007 7:23AM
I always imagined it was spelled "sike." This is, however the first time I've read anyone try to "Psych" me in written form.
I may actually do this to my 5g.
Francis @ Dec 20th 2007 7:42AM
i thought he meant "sick"
Ryan Trevisol @ Dec 20th 2007 8:10AM
Well that's a reversal. . . . PC Only. Okay, good thing today's the day I planned to put Parallels on my computer at work.
paloooz @ Dec 20th 2007 10:52AM
I've read it spelled "sic" before. Either way it's a really 90's phrase that needs to burn in hell.
Michael @ Dec 20th 2007 11:11AM
"Sic" is a Latin word which currently is used (as far as I can tell) when quoting someone, to indicate that any misspellings were provided by the speaker and the writer did not misspell anything.
For example:
"The graffiti on the wall said 'Were gunna [sic] get you!'"
Norock @ Dec 20th 2007 11:50AM
It actually means "Source InCorrect" - or that's what I've been told. Perhaps my sources were incorrect themselves!
mrdelayer @ Dec 20th 2007 12:38PM
Wrong -- it's a Latin word; does not stand for anything.
AndrewNeo @ Dec 20th 2007 7:28PM
I always read 'sic' as Spelling Is Correct, but no, it's just a latin word. You can also sic a dog on someone. Psyche is how you spell it as used in the article, though, coming from the word 'psychological'.
CubeGuy @ Dec 21st 2007 7:10PM
Ryan's obviously just a fan of one of the greatest shows ever.

LarsG @ Dec 22nd 2007 10:59PM
Sic is Latin. Literally "thus", "so", "just that".
In modern usage, pretty much only used when quoting someone to indicate that a misspelling was in the original quote.
e.g. "you're [sic] dumb if you think a software hack can turn an lcd into a touch-screen".
FuzzyCat @ Dec 23rd 2007 11:42AM
@LarsG
That's just [sic]k
'e.g. "you're [sic] dumb if you think a software hack can turn an lcd into a touch-screen".'
wow... you even managed to use it incorrectly too! You're == You are.
Matt Brydon @ Dec 20th 2007 7:23AM
Shouldnt that read "especially since WE hear it makes your old iPod touchscreen capable"? think you may have missed the 'we' out of that one Ryan, just a heads-up yea.
Mike Jones @ Dec 20th 2007 7:33AM
Yeah, its SIKE!!! I know, I lived the 80's!!!! :)
marwan @ Dec 20th 2007 8:13AM
too bad funeral for a friend is horrible
Dan @ Dec 20th 2007 6:08PM
what shitty music do you like?
marcelass @ Dec 20th 2007 7:56AM
It looks pretty cool actually, I hope I can get it right!
applefreak @ Dec 20th 2007 8:48AM
have fun with that
John @ Dec 20th 2007 7:59AM
And shouldn't the title be "iPod video to iPod touch..." since that's the way you're going?
Dan @ Dec 20th 2007 8:13AM
I think it's worded in the sense that the iPod touch UI goes to the iPod video. (touch->video)
Jason @ Dec 20th 2007 11:37AM
I agree with John, the title is backwards. The way that Dan wrote it, "iPod touch UI goes to the iPod video", but the title reads iPod touch goes to iPod video UI, which makes it sound like you're puggint the iPod video UI on the iPod touch, which of course makes no sense to do.
Kurt MacD @ Dec 20th 2007 8:00AM
Activate the dormant touch screen in your ipod 5G?!? Sweet mahogany!
redlukas @ Dec 20th 2007 4:51PM
i somewhat don't think this is possible.is there even a touchscreen built in? or did i just miss the irony?
matthew @ Dec 20th 2007 8:14AM
wow, funeral for a friend.
hate life much! (sorry, had to be said)

The effect would have been a lot more enjoyable if you hadn't added that last word to your article. Then we could see how gullible people really are. For added effect, you could go through and reply to everyone that believed it with a quick "Idiot." muhahaha. I would love to see how many people would act smart and say "You fool this can't give the iPod touchscreen abilities", could also call them an idiot too...
Sounds deliciously evil, but then that's kinda attacking the readers. Oh well, if you are ever feeling a little mischievous Ryan, I would love to see this happen :D
Fraggle.Rock @ Dec 20th 2007 8:27AM
Worked perfectly... cool :-)
jamma @ Dec 20th 2007 8:44AM
Hey could someone post or give me a link to a youtube vid of this in action?... it already looks awesome, but i'm not sure yet
Jacob @ Dec 20th 2007 2:13PM
I can't seem to loate this hack. ( Just articles about it) Will you point me in the right direction?
ccolanto @ Dec 20th 2007 12:19PM
It doesn't work for me.. when it reboots it still has the old firmware :S
help!
NG @ Dec 20th 2007 8:49AM
i don't have a 5g nor 5.5g, but this surely sounds cool
Tapia @ Dec 20th 2007 9:30AM
Where do I get this???!! I would love to give it a try!
mike @ Dec 20th 2007 9:37AM
So if someone could clarify...after you install this hack using Windows software, will you still be able to use it with OS X? I'd hate to have to use Windows iTunes.
Asher69 @ Dec 20th 2007 5:00PM
Yes. After the 'upgrade', it acts just like a normal iPod. You will see, however, the first time you reconnect it to iTunes after the hack install that iTunes will want to update your firmware. Obviously, if you do, you'll blow the hack away. Just FYI.
Anders @ Dec 20th 2007 9:59AM
Where do I find a tutorial to do this to my iPod? please post a link or something=)

Ed @ Dec 20th 2007 10:32AM
It's called the Read link. All of the (non-editorial) posts have them.
Arno @ Dec 20th 2007 10:01AM
That was easy. I wish the sub-menus were black also though.. kinda looks dumb when only the main menu and the Now Playing it black.
jozjonlin @ Dec 20th 2007 10:06AM
Way to go Engadget readers. We practically crashed their server. Their forum site was showing over 500 peeps looking for that hack. It took a while, but I was finally able to get in without errors.
By the way, I thought it was psique?
jepaz @ Dec 20th 2007 10:45AM
yeah their site went psyche...or sike...whatever.
BAM @ Dec 20th 2007 10:49AM

funny, et al
but when will the virtual and organic brains start working on unlocking the ipod classic firmware?
i know it's nearly impossible, but...
Adam @ Dec 20th 2007 11:02AM
How well does this work? Is it sluggish at all?
coolant8 @ Dec 20th 2007 11:05AM
what does it do to the battery life?
I kind of avoid animation on my ipod due to the battery concern and poor performance.
Bombaclaat @ Dec 20th 2007 11:41AM
pictures!
Andrew @ Dec 20th 2007 11:48AM
I just loaded it. It's OK, the song menu's are very similar, but a lot laggier.
I'm probably going to go back to the official firmware.
kastonie @ Dec 20th 2007 12:00PM
holy shiv there are pictures next to my post!
Dv8(xbl) @ Dec 20th 2007 12:02PM
I just did it, works like a charm.. thanks engadget!

Pretty much if you have a 80GB iPod Video it'll be a 5.5G.
