Get your PlayStation ROMs ready: psx4iphone now available
ZodTTD has made good on a promise to release their psx4iphone app to the public just a handful of days after announcing the project, meaning that the iPhone could very well end up taking a slot beside the PSP as a premier destination for portable PlayStation gaming. We're still not entirely convinced that the transition from PlayStation controller to touchscreen is going to be an easy one, though we're pretty sure hardcore gamers have overcome even greater obstacles in the past in the name of emulation. The package is being billed as a 0.1 release, meaning that it may not be the most solid build in the world -- but then again, it's not like you're getting your PlayStation jollies from Sony Ericsson any time soon, right?

this will serve better as a proof of concept...its hard enough to play NES games on the ipod touch let alone a dual axis games from the PS1
I don't think that psx would be playable at 9.81 fps...
Thats just the Title screen...
@Bernhard
you're right, that's usually where the fps are highest
...or you could just get a psp.
With homebrew. Yes, please.
the 9.81 fps isnt the actual fps. that screenshot was from when the game was in development.
There is the little problem of the iPhone having no usable buttons. Pressing the screen just isn't the same, sorry guys.
Somehow it works for texting (allegedly)...
Perhaps those same screen-mashing skills can be applied to putting that uber-micro to work with some Playstation handiwork?
Indeed, your handle proves appropriate nerdtalker.
I'm actually kinda shocked no 3rd party has released a controller that can be pugged in for it yet.
It plays like shit on my ipod touch.
It runs exteremly slow, for anyone who hasnt tried it yet.
Go into setting turn on frame skip to 3, and interlacing on and over clock it (press R2 + R1) to 125+%
There, that should help it run a bit smoother.
It's not a ROM. It's a disc image. Booyah grandma.
Then why don't we say "cartridge image"?
because a cartridge contains a Read-Only Memory (well they weren't really read only after some time...but like most ROMs the name stuck).
Hate the old skool term but PSX games are on CD-ROMs
I agree with the replies, yes its a CD, but its a read only memory CD, so ROM still can apply
@roflercopterer
What part of CD-ROM doesn't involve ROM?
I wish everyone would stop referring to the Playstation 1 as the PSX. Nobody calls the Gamecube "Dolphin" or the 360 "Xenon" so can we just all play nicely and call the Playstation 1 "PS1" and leave the Sony's dead DVR/Playstation hybrid to rest in peace?
Your analogies make no sense and your whining is annoying
PSX is what the Playstation 1 was referred to during it's development stage. Please point out my the flaw in my analogy.
Oh also, stop making a fool of yourself by complaining about MY complaining after complaining that a ROM is not a disc image. It just makes you look like a hypocrite.
@roflercopterer
You give me gas.
that's what I do
No... the psx name was given to the "original" playstation one after the second smaller version obtained the official PS1 name... it was done that way to differentiate the two versions, and since it works we are going to keep using it k?
Your analogies do not as a matter of fact make sense. You are referring to the code names for other consoles, and psx was indeed the codename for PlayStation, but then you mix things up and go ahead and refer to a "dead DVR/Playstation hybrid" which was also called psx, but is inconsistent with your analogy. Not to mention that like gfunk said, psx is as a matter of fact a nickname used (by many, many people I might add) to refer to the fat, original form factor of the PlayStation.
So let's recount: that's three possible uses of the name "psx" and you managed to bungle up all of them terribly.
All I'm saying is call the damn thing by it's name (PS1).
Only God knows how that wasn't clear in my initial post.
It's easier to call it by the name that Sony does.
The name PSX was in use long before the PS2 was conceived, so there was no reason to call it the PS1. And of course, since most of us here were around during the time of the PS1, a lot of us remember it by the name PSX since... that's what we called it. I don't know why it bothers you so much, but it shouldn't.
Now does anyone have an iPhone emulator, a SNES emulator that runs on the PS1, and a SGB emulator?
I like your thinking, if all that stuff holds up emulating through each other. Color me impressed.
I want them to release a xbox emulator to run on the iPhone, and a PS1 emulator to run on the xbox. I think I'm stretching the processing power though.
They do have a PS1 emulator for the Xbox - gotta mod the thing though. Good times playing Symphony of the Night with the Xbox controller.
I won't have to do modding. the xbox will be run as an emulator on the iPhone.
I agree with Guzzie, I also think calling it PSX is wrong.... correct name is PS1
But my ultimate opinion is: meh.
As long as we understand each other, I don't care how a word is written...
No, it's PSX...
The PS1 is the tiny version that came out later...
It was known as the PSX before it got shortened to just PlayStation from PlayStation EXperimental
So, no, you're wrong, it's PSX

tactile feedback emulator?
where do you get the ROMs for this?
Through illegal means.
hookers?
Why does it run so slowly? Is the iPhone that underpowered or is this emulator just that resource intensive?
http://www.wapswap.com
do you realize how much processor it takes to actually emulate something? it doesn't matter what power the host machine has.
Basically emulation is getting something to run on something it doesnt run natively, and thats always going to be a big strain on anything, simply because it wasn't built to do it in the first place.
Umm...seeing as I haven't ever written an emulator program, no, I have no idea how much processor it takes to emulate something. But I would guess that it DOES matter what kind of power the host machine has. Which is why I was curious in the first place about the iPhone's ability to run this. My big concern (as was mentioned already) is the lack of hard buttons.

What can't the iphone do?
Where are all the haters now?
Also PSP is an underpowered, overpriced piece of shit.
GP2X can do all the same as the PSP and more.
When has the general populace bought anything because it's more powerful or better? Must I remind you about the ipod and the 360, both which have competition with better hardware yet they kick everyone's ass in sales... welcome to the business world: marketing > product
who cares?
When you have a phone that can do more, is more powerful, and can kick the PSP's ass?
H?ell, the psp is a failure.
DS is better even.
This is not a feat to be chalked up to Apple or the iPhone, but the developers who made this emulator possible. The iPhone is still more full of lame then it's pricepoint or hype would suggest. Besides, to use your logic, when have you been able to play GTA on a GP2X?
you fuckign hater the GP2x has a psx emulator
I agree with Joe props to the developers...
Sales beat the crap out of your "psp being a failure" argument... I agree it could have been better, but a failure, it is not.
And who cares? GamePark Holdings for one... the PSP sells 3 times more a WEEK than the GP2X sold from release to october...
