Samsung's F490 / P720 handsets get outed
Although we came across Samsung's SGH-F490 during a recent FCC scavenger hunt, it, along with the previously announced P720 were recently spotted at an event in Ukraine. Unfortunately, most is lost in translation, but we can gather that the latter will rock dual SIM card slots, a 3-megapixel camera, a 320 x 240 resolution display and a price tag upwards of $500. As for the F490, you can expect a 5-megapixel camera, touchscreen display (presumably with tactile feedback support), 432 x 240 resolution panel and an estimated cost of $600. Beyond that, it seems that we'll have to wait before finding out more, but considering the Q2 / Q1 2008 release dates (respectively), we ought not be waiting long.

Miles @ Dec 24th 2007 10:22AM
Obviously cellphone companies have to steal Apple's design and ideas.
All of them are just expensive iphone knock offs.
Andrew Tanasescu @ Dec 24th 2007 10:27AM
I cant tell if your serious or not...
But I hope your not
Ricardo @ Dec 24th 2007 10:56AM
Do you know that the first phone to have a touchscreen and no buttons was released in 1993? Motorola has the A1200 series which also does that and was released more than a year before the iPhone. Nokia also had the 7710 phone. I could go on.
Fans just think Apple invented anything because they are blind and don't see any other brand on the market. So do some research before you complain.
Neeko @ Dec 24th 2007 10:57AM
Lets all assume hes kidding.
Hung @ Dec 24th 2007 12:06PM
Judging by the tremendous fanboiism and lack of openmindedness in all his other posts (click his name and check his profile), he's being totally serious. Unless he is satirizing fanbois. Then that means his posts would be be real. But NOT REAL at the same time.
Whoa, I need to lay off the holiday ham.

Alot of touch screen phones have been made before the Iphone LG Prada came out at the 4th Quarter of 2006
So, don't act like the Iphone was the first touch screen phone cause its NOT!
derX @ Dec 24th 2007 7:57PM
Umm, I am definitely not an iPhone or Apple fanboi, however, let's be real here. I am not at all saying the iPhone is God or a member of the Holy Trinity, but you would crazy to say that the iPhone, and, to a lesser extent, the LG Prada did not start this craze.
Many people say that there were plenty of touch screen phones around before the iPhone. Yes, there were but the iPhone is not your conventional "touch screen device." It lacks a stylus and is completely finger operated. Its interface is omptimized for finger operation, you cannot name a pre-iPhone announced phone that can claim this title.
Again, there were touch screen devices before the iPhone, but, in this year alone, there were literally *dozens* of iPhone-like devices. Is this a coincidence? Methinks not.
Love, hate, or not know who Steve Jobs is, you cannot argue that his devices set trends.

BTW, those first two phone are undeniably gorgeous.

You're just a fanboy who worships Apple... touchscreens cameout a longtime ago and phone like the LG Prada and HTC touch, as well as Motorola MING and ROKR E6. And the Apple iPhone could've been copied from LG Prada seeing as it has the same quadruple icons at the bottom of the screen.
jacobpw @ Jan 5th 2008 4:48PM
just got the SGH-F700 and its cheaper, better looking, better battery life, better interface(croix), better specs/features, better camera, comes with bose headphones if you get it on voda(worth £70), it has haptics(phone vibrtates when you touch icon on the screen), it has a full qwerty pull out keypad, has youtube, has google maps, you can read your word documents, has video calling, has propper headphone jack. Now will somebody tell me why you say the over-hyped iphone is better than it?
Andrew Tanasescu @ Dec 24th 2007 10:28AM
Add wifi and im intrested...
Stunning design tho on the F series tho..
Alex @ Dec 24th 2007 11:26AM
Can't wait for the F700 (U940) to come out for Verizon, it looks so sexy there.
Ricardo @ Dec 24th 2007 11:36AM
It would be nice to know what OS they have though. A good hardware means nothing without a good OS.
waiownsyou @ Dec 24th 2007 1:27PM
It's going to be the same proprietary OS they've been running forever (unless this gets destroyed by Verizon), so dont expect Windows Mobile or something like that
Hung @ Dec 24th 2007 5:42PM
The link says that the i550 and i780 will run WM6, the i560 will run Symbian 9.3 (S60?), and all the touchscreen phones will pretty much have to run Croix (it's nonnative resolution may present a problem for WM).
Nice job on being completely wrong waiownsyou. You should work for Jizzmodo.

I just used the F700 (second from left in the photo) here in Germany on Vodafone and it was the worst phone experience of the year, yes even worse than the iphone. The touchpad tech samsung is using is very inconsistent. Had to hit the screen so many times for one thing, tried two handsets as well. The os has no themes or color changes, all you can do is change your wallpaper. The 3mp camera is horrible, very slow to start up and take photos and a serious noise problem, even for a camera phone. Email client has a 500kb max size for attachments which is a waste. Poor battery life (got less than 18hrs with no use in a 3G environment) and a very low quality speaker phone. So many problems with this os, I could go on and on. If you're considering any of the touch screen models, I strongly suggest getting your hands on it before buying.
David @ Dec 24th 2007 4:46PM
You don't punch the screen stupid, you have to touch it lightly
But anyways, Samsung touch screen phones are better designed than most out there
drew @ Dec 24th 2007 4:56PM
Where did I say I "punched" it? Your resorting to personally insulting me makes your opinion mute any way. You just sound like an ignorant fanboy. The F700 even after adjusting the feedback sensitivity to it's highest setting still required numerous pressings for some things to work. Right now in Germany it's the phone being returned the most at Vodafone. Have you used any of these phones personally?
Chris @ Dec 24th 2007 1:14PM
Both Armani phone and F700 (Vodafone exclusive) have been released in Europe for a while now. That F700 seems to combine best of both worlds. Massive touchscreen and a full Qwerty keyboard but the reality is less shiny. The operating system Samsungs 'Cross bladiha' (forgot the freaking name) is slow as hell and running on both phones.
So to conclude. Great design but it lacks speed and WIFI -> where's the WIFI??
I bought a N95 8GB instead. All touchscreen phones at the moment have flaws.. are slow, are missing a major feature.
drew @ Dec 24th 2007 1:34PM
I agree 100% It's not real world ready yet.
danny @ Dec 24th 2007 1:35PM
That's exactly the hardware model I'd love to see on the first Android-based handset. Add WiFi and GPS and it'd be the perfect platform for the first handset launch of Android.

when i first saw the first model , i seriously thought that it was a crystal case for the LG prada !
the design has become sooo boaring ,
and the future is dull , if the trends continue all we gonna see is box with a giant screens are being called phone.
BobTurbo @ Dec 24th 2007 5:25PM
How do these companies manage to make a rectangle with rounded edges so ugly?
js @ Dec 24th 2007 5:38PM
.... because it's not an iPhone.
