The 2007 Engadget Awards: Nominate the Smartphone of the Year

Nominating is easy, simply leave a comment with what you're nominating for this category. We'll round up the best selections and put them to the popular vote.
Here's five simple rules of what NOT to do:
- Don't include your reasons for nominating it.
You can debate the product later when we put it up to vote. Just leave the name of what you want to nominate, ok? - Don't nominate anything that wasn't sold for the first time in 2007.
We will allow updated versions of previous devices, however. - No concept devices or prototypes.
It has to be a real gadget people can buy! Pre-orders don't count. - Don't nominate anything more than once.
It's not a popularity contest (yet), all it does is make our lives harder. Just do a quick find to see if someone's already beat you to it. - Seriously, don't nominate anything that's already been nominated!

I'm sorry but the iPhone is not a smartphone. No SDK -> no smartphone. It may be sleek, beautiful, powerful etc, but it doesn't do what you want it to do - it does what Steve Jobs wants it to do.
justin @ Dec 24th 2007 5:44PM
From WikiPedia:
"In terms of features, most smartphones support full featured email capabilities with the functionality of a complete personal organizer. Other functionality might include an additional interface such as a miniature QWERTY keyboard, a touch screen or a D-pad, a built-in camera, contact management, an accelerometer, built-in navigation hardware and software, the ability to read business documents in a variety of formats such as PDF and Microsoft Office, media software for playing music, browsing photos and viewing video clips, internet browsers or even just secure access to company mail, such as is provided by a BlackBerry."
The iPhone fits the bill.
Rich @ Dec 24th 2007 7:35PM
@justin
By that definition, my Sony Ericsson K850i is also a smartphone. It is not.
Smartphone = open OS. No SDK = not open.
Alex Brewer @ Dec 25th 2007 11:41PM
A smartphone doesn't need an open O.S. Sure, the iPhone needs an SDK to reach its full potential, but honestly, the ability to add third party programs does not a smartphone make. A smartphone is basically a phone with increased funcionality so that it can do some tasks that would normally be done on a computer more easily than on a regular mobile phone. If you think the iPhone isn't a smartphone you're just subscribing to the undercurrent of Apple hatred in the tech world. Anyone who doesn't think the iPhone is a smartphone is stupid.
