Asus monitors: your best defense against crossbow attacks?
This one's YouTube caption says it best: "Shooting at the monitor from the arbalest! Striking!" If you replace 'arbalest' with 'fancy European crossbow' you've got a recipe for entertainment. Some Ukrainian crazies got ahold of an Asus LS201 monitor with protective glass and really went all out. The hammer and nails scenes are less than convincing, but the crossbow moment has to be seen to be believed. Think of it as Ukraine's present to you. Video is after the break.

If one of my employees were hitting all the electronics with hammers, nails and crossbows...infront of customers. Im not exactly sure but I would be very tempted to hit him with the same.
Alan Partridge @ Dec 25th 2007 1:31PM
I clicked on the arbalest tag hoping for more coverage. There wasn't any.
TASER FANBOIZ!

hgahahaha
ASUS Monitor + 2
Arrow - 0
Epic FAIL
Mike @ Dec 25th 2007 10:00PM
Actually, crossbows fire bolts, not arrows...
4honor @ Dec 25th 2007 1:01PM
Finally! I can play the Wii without the strap! Yay!
Flashpoint @ Dec 25th 2007 1:23PM
Wii Sports just got serious.
ssuk @ Dec 25th 2007 3:59PM
to hell with remote controls in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games, time for some REALISM! >=D
JB @ Dec 26th 2007 2:41AM
But will it play DOOM?!
Tyler Mayes @ Dec 25th 2007 1:07PM
2 Damage!
hp540 @ Dec 25th 2007 1:08PM
Pretty ridiculous monitor, but the crossbow experiment was flawed in that the wood block was immobile whereas the monitor was allowed to 'swing' back when struck by the arrow, thus reducing its kinetic energy.
I wonder what would happen if the monitor was fixed in place.
Nimajus Bagdonavicius @ Dec 25th 2007 1:20PM
Do you strap your monitor to a wall so it's immobile on your desk? Oh guess not... Even if you did it's not an experiment. Thank you for attempting to downgrade an entertaining product showcase video by being an ass. Have a wonderful holiday sir.
James Papadopoulos @ Dec 25th 2007 1:24PM
I don't think it was really an "experiment" so much as a demonstration... Unless people walk around with crazy ass crossbows there with people's monitors in their sights. . .
Some people are never satisfied. Geez.
The Dude @ Dec 25th 2007 1:49PM
Pretty ridiculous comment, but Nimajus summed it up nicely. The crossbow is obviously overkill. When the fuck are you ever going to fire one off at your monitor? Congrats on missing the point, retard.
And no, the wooden board was not immobile. It was propped up against a chair but it clearly moved when it was struck by the arrows and afterwards shifted position just a bit.
I wonder what would happen if you had any sense.
/End of the assessment on just how much you fail.
johnnychipface @ Dec 25th 2007 2:22PM
"Do you strap your monitor to a wall so it's immobile on your desk?"
Do you often find yourself firing a crossbow in the direction of your monitor?
hp540's point was that the comparison was misleading but you just wanted to go ahead and be an arsehole (which you succeeded in, 2 points!).
ethan @ Dec 25th 2007 5:50PM
Yeah........I'm still pretty sure it'd be fine considering it bend the tips.
Jimiisama @ Dec 25th 2007 9:48PM
Everyone who replied here is an ass. Sorry someone had to explain the magic to you with some kind of analytical thinking.
Tis---strange @ Dec 26th 2007 6:51AM
As you say sir, I want to be an ass. A filthy german ass! Yay!
wesg @ Dec 25th 2007 1:16PM
Anyone care to post an English transcript?
The General @ Dec 25th 2007 1:21PM
This is a durable monitor, I can hit it with a hammer, drive a nail into it, even shoot it with a crossbow and it still works!
/not that hard to figure out
wesg @ Dec 25th 2007 1:22PM
I gathered that much, General, I was more interested in the other specifics.
Michael LaFramboise @ Dec 25th 2007 1:29PM
Hello all, blah blah blah,
...Here we got this monitor from Asus for review...
...It held up to all our tests etc etc...
...Some people say its bullet proof... we wanted to test that...
...here we have the crossbow...etc...
...this is probably one of the most durable monitors in the world..
Not word for word, but you get the idea
wesg @ Dec 25th 2007 1:34PM
Thanks Michael, that was more of what I was looking for.
R0B3RT @ Dec 25th 2007 1:32PM
The screen ha dents it took damage lol. that cool ddid it take all the money to buy that one monitor.. lol In Russia computer uses you!
z0phi3l @ Dec 25th 2007 1:38PM
Do you speak English?
Willy @ Dec 26th 2007 4:45AM
I' m sure he does speak English, you m*r*n... he was just trying to make a joke, in the spirit of those "in soviet russia..." (turn statement backwards) jokes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakov_Smirnoff
Andrew @ Dec 26th 2007 6:47AM
Except in this case it was in the Ukraine, a totally different country. They are not the same people and don't even have the same language or alphabet. It's like mistaking Canada for the US.
R0B3RT @ Dec 26th 2007 8:04PM
Actually i meet a bunch of people from all over that area that say it just like Mother Russia some places worse some places better they still all speak horrible English... And yes it was a joke.... Internet sarcasm lost...
ark_v2 @ Dec 25th 2007 1:35PM
That was hilarious!
Vanessa Mae FTW :D
Flashpoint @ Dec 25th 2007 1:36PM
In SOVIET RUSSIA - Monitor lets fly arrows against you !
Wwhat @ Dec 26th 2007 8:25AM
I bet you could bounce an arrow (or bolt if you will) off those classical glass soviet CRT monitors easy.
I dropped a medium sizes tubed TV once on a stone floor and it merely put a scratch on the screen it landed on.
bvocal @ Dec 25th 2007 1:55PM
entertaining.
stupid of people to get wrapped up in perfection of the script... or not. bla bla bla.
on a similar note, many think that shooting a crt with a gun is going to be really great, but it turns out not to be so great, but we used to do something that is quite entertaining for a few rounds, which is to bowl your monitor with a real bowling ball.
set the CRT on a stand, then build a ramp for the ball so that it will hit in the center, step back 20-30 feet and let er rip.
you will amamzed at how strong CRT glass is, then, when you do get it to break, you will ove the sound and the visual.
cheers.
D.E. Lloyd @ Dec 25th 2007 1:49PM
My favorite part is that they're playing some Ukanian Violin version of "Classical Gas".
That's one tough monitor. Too bad it's not a touch-screen.
chainofcommand02 @ Dec 25th 2007 3:55PM
I second that. The music IS cool, but I don't understand what it has to do with selling a monitor... Oh well, enjoy the tune anyways.
Klaus Burton @ Dec 25th 2007 4:33PM
Yeah, 'cause it would be possible to make it so that crossbow arrows can't affect it but fingers/plastic pens can
Jeremy W @ Dec 25th 2007 9:07PM
Klaus,
Do you have any idea how touchscreens work? There are many different types, and some of them would definitely be able to work with this "bullet proof" screen protection.
Mike @ Dec 25th 2007 10:04PM
That music is actually a cover by Vanessa Mae. If you liked that song, I'd recommend "Red Hot" and "Storm" of hers as well.
Snipery @ Dec 25th 2007 1:58PM
Its not "some Uk(r)anian Violin Version" but a cover version by violin player Vanessa Mae, who is half Thai, half Chinese.
DarkSi @ Dec 25th 2007 2:24PM
I'd LOVE to see someone shooting a .22 at one of these, I bet it would ricochet as well.
Ricardo @ Dec 25th 2007 2:27PM
It's definately impressive, but seriously, I wouldn't buy a 4x3 monitor today.
Jeremy W @ Dec 25th 2007 9:08PM
Why not? As far as I'm concerned, for computer use 4:3 is still the way to go. I hate using widescreen monitors.
Apreche @ Dec 25th 2007 2:37PM
It looks like there is an extra piece of plastic armor over the front of that monitor.
Wwhat @ Dec 26th 2007 8:21AM
You think? ...
Eric @ Dec 25th 2007 3:00PM
You can see when he hits it with the arbalest and the monitor moves back and forth that it was damaged from when he hit it with the hammer. The glare lets you see the imperfection in the glass or whatever from when he hit it.
Still, it's impressive if not a bit unnecessary.
tbirdman @ Dec 25th 2007 4:01PM
a bit unnecessary sounds like the perfect gift for me. i just got a printer that can print images to printable cds. i will probably never us it, but it is cool none-the-less.
Dirkus @ Dec 25th 2007 9:55PM
I'm thinkin' you probably don't have kids. Or maybe not three of them.
Seriously, I'm pretty sure my kids could destroy ANY item in my home in under a minute. The only reason they haven't broken the monitor I have connected to their PC yet is that it's a twelve ton 20" CRT that a buddy of mine dumpster-dove from a college IT department.
When the Machine Wars come, and all humanity is reduced to smoldering rubble, the only two deprecated pieces of "human interface" technology still in existence will be that ASUS LCD, and my kids' CRT.
ascatal @ Dec 25th 2007 3:03PM
heh cool monitor, quite durable but the whole video reminds me strongly off the old timex watch ads "takes alicking and keeps on ticking" i knopw i am showing my age here with that quote but it seems to be much the same theme in the video as in those old ads: our product is one tough S.O.B.
SteveMB @ Dec 25th 2007 3:03PM
You'll shoot your eye out! You'll shoot your eye out!
BigD145 @ Dec 25th 2007 3:11PM
A good crossbow should have knocked the monitor right off the table. These things were invented to impale knights, after all.
Simon @ Dec 25th 2007 6:01PM
yea seriosly, that was one shitty crossbow.
Wwhat @ Dec 26th 2007 8:29AM
He put the string under tension with his hands, a real medieval anti-knight crossbow requires a ratchet for that, or at least for you to put a foot in the end (they had a special attachment for that) and then pull it with 2 gloved hands and all your might.
It's still a sturdy screen though.
